What do you mean by "standard def?" As an output or an acquisition?
I miss seeing 16mm, which was ironically only shown in SD despite being capable of 4K. Now that we have HD output, we've stopped using it and instead use low-res digital. Hmm...
as an output. I just think some edits look more aesthetically appealing when it's not HD.
I fucking love this edit and I honestly think if it was shot with a RED camera it wouldn't have the same effect it has on me now. I believe it was shot with a VX? maybe a DVX

HD does not necessarily mean more detail, moreso it's (wrongfully) used to indicate frame size when it comes to video. You can have HD output while simultaneously having that dreamy soft look; it all depends on glass and lighting.
These guys sent RED footage through VHS then resampled it back into HD and got an awesome effect:
btw Andreas' video was shot with a VX2k if I'm not mistaken. The stuff he put out with an HVX200 managed to look soft and dreamy as well.
Lots of skateboarders are all about SD still. There's somewhat of an anti-HD movement. Personally, I still love watching skate videos shot on good ol' VXs, but HD is definitely the standard as far as ski films go. Skateboarding is cool shot in HD too. Mixed feelings I suppose. HD is obviously an improvement.
God damnit I hate the skater anti-HD shit. It's not fucking cool. Your vx looks like shit, buy a new fucking camera. Even a fucking HVX is still not super crisp but at least you can watch it full screen without wanting to kill yourself. SD was cool when people only watched vhs/dvd but now with the internet, its rare for a computer screens res to be lower than 720p, most are now 1080p. Watching vx on a 1080p screen sucks dick. Skaters need to move on, luckily bigger companies shoot all HD now, the fucking loser wannabes will figure it out soon.
I love baker, but fuck that. The new spike jonze movie Pretty Sweet is fucking awesome, thats how skating should be filmed. It was a good mix of old style (just with an hvx) mixed with a ton of modern filming techniques. I loved it.
A tiny bit, but just because it was so easy to work with. VFX work could be sloppy as shit, and it still looked great in SD. And a 1TB hard drive could fit a ton of SD footage. And there was no need to do offline editing because the files played back so easily. The larger the format, the bigger the headache dealing with it.
