1999 Freeskiing Open

Watch this little gem!

The 1999 US Open of Skiing from Vail, Colorado put on my Mike Jaquet and Micah Abrams of now defunct Freeze magazine. This was the second ever major ski slope style competition and featured switch take-offs and landings and off axis moves that now look old school but were cutting edge back then. JP Auclair, JF Cusson, Vincent Doria, Philou Porier were the star and very, very young Tanner Hall is featured as well.
The course was rough and but got the job done.

man this is so sick, amazing to see the beginnings of our humble sport just 13 years ago... now look at it.

was that slopestyle course just 2 jumps? the misty sevens were dope haha and young tanner, oh god. someone should go back in time and show him his adult friend finder pictures

use to love the days when a 5 would get you some respect, and the hill after a day at middle school was the best thing ever-good thing is i haven't improved in nearly 10 years ha.

One of the reasons I am proud to be from vail... I got so see the beginning of the sport before my very eyes!!! every US free skiing open and was a big influence on my choice to ski park! I got all those guys autographs!!! Claim!

Man. I was thinking about the US Open the other day. With Olympics coming up in a few years and Dew Tour down to one stop, I think the time is prime for a resurrection of the US Open. Skiing needs a big open event.

Man... and I remember all of this stuff...

I remember the first time I ever saw those yellow salomons that could go backwards... and saw "Fifty" (possibly last good Warren Miller film) and freaked the fuck out as a 12/13 year old seeing guys throwing down in the park on skis...

Before that, the only 'extreme' skiing I had ever seen was TGR flicks like Harvest and some of the earlier McConkey shit where it was just sending it down spines. Seeing park skiing for the first time was mind bottling.

And it was so core back then. Took about 10 years after that before there were more than maybe 3 or 4 other park skiers at your local mountain... and that's on a good day... and you made friends with them quickly because you were unique.
