Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

I tour in 140 flex head raptors and it's actually not as big a deal as you'd think. A dedicated touring boot is obviously much nicer, but I can't say I find myself cursing my boots very often. A race or race style boot can be a lot more comfortable and versatile than people around here tend to believe.

Stoked to up my touring game.
Was rocking trekkers for my first 6 seasons in Utah. For this season, did it big with a pair of Guardians, and then got a whole Dynafit set up for a different pair of skis.

Gonna be hard to choose what to use when, but I think it'll be a good year, assuming the snow holds.

that wasnt that bad at all.  There were WAY worse weak layers pretty much all season last year in Utah.  Im talking just wrist break

We just made these and I mounted them up with some dukes.

Sorry for the terrible quality pic stitch.

They are an all carbon layup, 120-105-120, camber under foot, rockered and tapered tips and tails.

And they weigh in at 7.5 lbs for the pair. 

They have thus far proven to be an awesome touring ski for everyday, variable conditions here in Utah.  I have pretty much the same ski but 20mm wider for the deep days ; )

I'm not a fan of symmetrical skis, but I don't ski park either sooooooo...  Yeah, anyways- nice work man.  Really really nice.  7.5 is so fkn $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Sick thread. I was really hoping to get out a ton this year but as of right now it isn't looking to good here in CO. Hopefully winter is going to hit us hard.

I'll contribute some more terrible pictures to this thread.

A few of us skied the Birthday Chutes in White Pine this past Saturday.  We got a late start because it was a friends birthday the night before, but we ended up skiing the main line in the sunset and skiing out in total darkness.  It turned out to be awesome.

alltime on jag sharks with fks= heavy as hell but bomb proof for now. ive heard of smoepeopl bending the alltime plates but mine are yet to bend

im going to put this here since you guys are the ones who need a binding like this.

I have for sale a pair of Salomon guardian a/t bindings. they are brand new in box and have never been mounted or even taken out of the box.

Times are tough and another ski set up isnt in the cards right now, I will let these go for 400 plus shipping. they retail for 450.

I just picked up a pair of surface new life's and threw some barons on them. I got everything for a pretty sweet deal so I'm stoked to get into some touring. I now need to scrape together the money for a probe, pack, beacon, and skins.

On another note, if anyone around the Tahoe area who knows a fair bit about being safe in the BC wants to take me on a a few day tours to teach me the ropes I would really love to do that.

the lowest I could do is 375 plus shipping internationally, shipped to anywhere in the us.

That would be making a loss on them I was hoping to get my money back but not getting much interest.

sell the barons, you are going want a more bomber binding. especially since the method of clipping back into ski mode is much less of a pain.

Grew up in VT and still here (UVM). I did a couple days per year until I bought a setup last year and did 25-30 days on it. I have a couple setups now.

The ON3P Caylors and MFD/FKS are really heavy, but it's solid and I used it for all my backcountry/sidecountry last year as well as the few powder days we had. I didn't want Dukes so I was pretty much left with MFD. They work just fine though.
I went all out this year and bought Dynafit Tital UL boots and ON3P Jeffrey Tours with Dynafit Radicals. I used Binding Freedom inserts as well so that I can move my Radicals in the future if I want to.

I don't remember who asked about the kit jondrums sells, but I bought the drill bit and tap with my inserts and the process went pretty smoothly. A friend at a local gear shop drilled the initial holes with a jig, and I checked them with a dry mount. Then I used a drill press (very key) to make larger holes with the Binding Freedom bit. I made a thread guide for the tap by drilling/tapping holes in a plastic cutting board (the board can be placed flat on the ski to keep the tap as vertical as possible). Did a dry mount with inserts and binders, then epoxyed the inserts in with g-flex marine epoxy. The whole process took an evening and a six pack, but it was fun and I like mounting my own stuff.

How do you like the MFD set up? I read Blister Gear Review's look at them and the idea seemed pretty compelling and their early test seemed to verify?

Thoughts on that one anybody?

Not everyone is going to get as tired as you. And 2.5kg per foot? If that's extra weight to you your skis must be 1/16 of a pound.

Thanks @Dirty.Harry. I'll be buying a kit for my little STH12 Drivers soon. Inserts and tools. I'll probably make my own tap and drill guide block from steel on my mill. +K

instead of making another thread i am just going to bump this. any knowledgeable opinions or advice would great.

I have been doing a lot of research into getting a touring/sidecountry set up and ideally would like it to be somewhat affordable... and without sacrificing skiing the way i like to. so these are the options i have been tossing around in my head.

Sacking up and getting a pair of guardians when i have enough money. Obviously these and a new pair of skis would be ideal but pretty much out of the question for me monetarily.  Does anyone have any reviews of the freedom binding inserts? if i went that route i would get the gaurdians and mount them with the inserts on my SFB's so i can swap between my FKS/ guardians.  Is that even possible?

I have also been looking at the MFD's with my FKSs?

right now i am at the point where the more i am looking into a sidecountry set up the more i am confusing myself...

FKS + Guardians seems like overkill unless your using your SFB's in the park. I'd say the majority of skiers using inserts are flipping between tech (Dynafit/Plum) and alpine bindings (FKS/STH/etc.). I'd say go for guardians or MFD's with fks......

Okay, about me, 6'-1" 180 lbs, living in Marquette, MI so not as flat as the rest of Michigan. Currently riding 13' 184 Bacons with FKS 140's, boots are 13' Quest 120's. Looking to get into some touring to get some more pow turns in this year. Did 5ish hikes in my SPK's last season and got some of the best turns of my life, so I think I'm gonna like touring hahah. I need some suggestions on bindings and skins, and whatever I may be forgetting. I plan on using the bacons, and putting the fks and whatever AT binding I choose on quiver killers so in bounds performance isn't a major concern but a plus. Part of me wants to go the cheap route, find some used Fritschi's or Naxo's and just try touring out but it worries me because if I want to step it up a bit I don't want to be at three mounts. I am sort of an intern at a local shop, all my work gets me $8/hr store credit and I'm allowed to work up as big of a tab as I'd like. We're sell marker and solly (among others) so i have those as options if I want to go new. I am leaning toward this option because if I for some reason don't enjoy touring as much as I think or don't ever get out I can resell the binding at not much of a loss. If I go this route I'll likely end up on trackers. Basically just looking for input here. On skins, I've heard great things about the BD Ascension and G3 Alpinist skins, I'm leaning towards the G3. I need some more input and info on tip and tail attachments and width and length. Thanks in advance for input and sorry about the rant

And wow guy above me is looking into the exact same thing hahah small world. I may be using the Bacons in the park some but I also have some octolands to throw around for that so I'm up in the air. I love the bacons everywhere.

Nevermind, I'm pretty sure they're a pair of graces. If not I have no idea who's doing a veneer with that style of 'wood burn' or whatever in the veneer.

Top sheets are burned into the veneer. very sick ! first time with a tech binding and its LIGHT and feels bomber when clicked in , trying them out tmrw
