Its pretty easy to hop around on a rail. Thats why people who cant even ski a normal run can learn to "shred" rails in their backyard like its nothing.

A big tail press is a hell of a lot harder than a super fed.

How does one press their way down a gnar urban 6 kink though? If I was that 6 kink I'd be soooooo embarrassed if some kid straight up lip disaster 2 pretz 2's on me or 3 swaps my midsection.

Well thats the point of the movement. They gotta figure it out because if someone pressed a six kink that would be pretty damn embarassing for that rail.

Lip disaster 2 pretz 2 is what im talkin about! Spinning in, spiining out no glorified rollerblading in that.

Also if you could show me a video of someone doing 3 swaps on a six kink that would be something.

Ok, so we can agree a little at least. There is common ground!

I still think having down the dancin skills (something like all 8, for example) is more critical than being able to press and whatnot. The ability to pivot/swap/pretzel shows that the rider has maximum balance, control, and skill when it comes to sliding on metal. Once the fundamentals are down, go for the style points. Nollies on, pressing, surface swapping, etc.

A true master of rail skiing can do both.

You've never tried a pressed out blunt slide blind 2 out have you? Shits fucking hard. I'm able to super-fed or 2-pretzel-2 a rail WAY more constantly than I am able to press-blind-2-out.

Perfect combo of tech and style in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing tech tricks and big combos on rails, but there's just something about a really nice press with tons of style. I think they both hold a solid place in skiing, it's just a matter of preference.

For a comp skier yah maybe, for a film skier I dont agree though.

I will agree that this luke brown character has some fly rail tricks, switch butter one to lip on was really sick.

as the OP is correct in appreciating such things, making a thread about how skiing should only match what the OP specifically likes about it is a really douchey thing to throw out there

You can't deny that both take a great amount of skill. I feel like pressing does make more balance than tons of swaps because you have to change your balance point so much, but "dancing" requires more edge control.

I like it both, BUT I think the more important thing with both is how you do them. Spinning around a whole bunch, dancing on rail with your arms and body going crazy is ugly. I don't care how many swaps/pretzels/spins out you can do, if you can't keep your upper body calm while doing it it's ugly and pointless in my opinion. If I'm judging a rail jam and some kid does a 3-up-doubleswap-4out with his arms all over the place looking like he's gonna die the whole time and another kid does 2on-to-switch or blunt-2out and his upper body is calm, I'm giving it to the the 2nd kid every damn time.

Critical may not be the right word. It's more like a step system, get the basics down first, learn to get the technical aspects (balance, gripping, popping, pretzeling, etc) and become comfortable, THEN add style.

but why do switchups and k feds have to be the norms? Just because those have been the norms for the past 5 or so seasons doesnt mean it has to stay that way. Obviously thats not changing any time soon but it certainly would be nice if it did.

Actually I have haha I like your ability to make assumptions based off of nothing though. All I'm saying is I appreciate someone like Dale who can do so much Gnarly shit on rails compared to someone who just tail presses and does blind surface swaps.

You may not notice it as much, but I've seen more and more presses, surface swaps, 5050s, ect in edits in the past season or so than there were before. It's just not happening as quickly, and that's simply because it doesn't look as impressive as dancing around on a rail does. Case in point, the kid earlier in this thread that said they're not hard, they don't look as hard as doing a bunch of switch-ups or spinning like a top out of a rail, so in the public eye (those who haven't tried to do them) they're easy and therefore not "edit-worthy". But with things like the B&E show and guys like Keefer and Max Hill and Kieran and even Jossi doing presses and butters and surface tricks more and more I think they will become more and more popular, it's just going to take time because of the "wow factor" they have to overcome.

I apologize for assuming, you're right, I shouldn't have done that...you just seemed to be assuming they're easy yourself (since a lot of people do assume that...I even used to till I tried doing them).

Dale is one of my favorite skiers, and one of the reasons is because everything he does is deliberate and has style, he's not just spinning like crazy because he can. That's where I think people are mistaken, they think just being able to do the trick is enough, there's no attempt to make them look good. I'm not 100% agreeing with the OP, I'm saying what he's looking for has a place. But, I am saying that I'd much rather see someone who can do ANY trick with style than someone who dances around on a rail looking like a mad man.

It's a good "standard" to have as it showcases said skier can spin both ways, slide and balance both ways, has control over all of their edges, and can stop and pivot rotation. But it does really boil down to how well it is all executed.

Sorry if this is wandering too far off the original point. I think in the end though, it does come down to HOW you do it, not just how much you can do. (Brendan said it best). You can stop the FUCK out of a tre swap and it'd look infinitely better than a poorly executed tail press.

I thought op was assuming both were done woth style but yes I to hate when people flail around on rails trying to be cool on another note 360 surface swaps my be the hardest trick ever and whoever can do them is god.

I just wanna see more butters on to rails, and butters in general. I can't see how people do them on to handrails or anything that's not low or ride on. I can do them on to n00b ride on ledges, and if my hill sets up this one pipe they have as a really low jump up to the rail I'm gonna try them on their.

Basically we need more garrett russell.

I'm not commenting on which is better or which is more difficult. I'm saying that you have no right to tell me what's cool. I'm going to do what I want to do and if you don't think it's cool then don't ruin my stoke. If you have a burning urge to tell me I suck because I either can't or don't want to do what you think is cool, then you're a dick and YOU don't deserve to be in our sport because we're a community and we build each other up, not break each other down. At the very least we bite our tongues out of respect for people out there having fun.

For a skier a more styled out nose slide would be pretty awesome, I think that part of the reason why "dancing" on rails is becoming more popular is that it wows the audience of people watching,

just like most "spin to win" tricks in comps like triples, i don't really believe in triples as they are hucked to shit but they are cool to watch.

Hey hey hey,

Never did I say that people who are rail dancing kings "suck" at skiing and this thread is not necessarily about which is better or more difficult.

For example a penciled out ten was a crazy trick way back when and then people started to realize that spinning straight up like a ballerina wasnt that visually appealing. Now this whole glorified rollerblading has come to a bit of an extreme and I think soon people are going to start to realize that it is not as visually appealing as other ways of addressing a rail.
