Suggestion: Interviews with skiers we don't know

One of the big ideas behind our new homepage, and our new news system is allowing riders and aspiring media people everywhere to tell their story.

Newschoolers shouldn't be only about the spit and polish of the pro skiing world, it should be about the interesting characters and underground skiers that exist everywhere.

So if you have a knack for writing, a local pro buddy and some pictures from last year... why not tell the story of the athlete that we all should know?

If enough people from your local area are stoked on it and help upvote, it'll for sure at least get in the mix and have a sweet chance of getting homepage love.

TL;DR - Tell us a story we haven't heard before.

I like the idea of NSers being interviewed. Especially older members talking about how they manage to keep skiing after they're done with school etc. Be it as ski bums, weekend skiers etc.
Not a fan of the new hompage though, just my opinion.

I wanna write an article on the gem of skiing that is Ontario. but it'll be awhile till I would even have time to write it let alone interview people for it. Im going into Journalism and I think im a pretty good writer but Grade 12 is really busy. Still, good idea.

No doubt about it, social media has really changed the media game online. It's always interesting to view good member-submitted content, but unfortunately that chance often comes few and far between. As great as it can be, I don't think that member-submitted content can completely replace a more 'traditional' news program, with a competent editor to determine standards and priorities, and the funding to pay for professionally produced content.

Member-submitted content has its place, and can and should be integrated into a larger news program - but it shouldn't take over completely. Without some kind of editorial oversight to determine standards and priorities, a member-submitted content program can just become a clusterfuck of juvenile self-promotion with little or no journalistic merit.

I agree 100% that Newschoolers' news and front-page content shouldn't be only about the spit and polish of the ski world, but removing paid writers from the equation is not going to result in good content. Organizations like Powder and the ESPN Freeskiing blog have been doing great jobs of producing very interesting content that digs way deeper than the tabloid superficiality that's common in ski journalism. They're reporting on behind-the-scenes players, ski patrollers, parkbuilders, backcountry expeditions, local legends, up-and-coming kids, you name it - but using good writers and creative editorial direction to make it happen. At the end of the day, member-submitted content just can't replace that.

Additionally, NS is social media - not traditional media. So most of the argument is arguing about the wrong thing.
