It's annoying when people defend smokers or obese people. It's their decision to become fat or die of cancer, doesn't effect me. It's a stupid argument to make that they are ill informed therefore we should cut the lagest soda out to help them...I'm skinny and I occasionally like to treat myself to giant soda's. I work out and eat healthy food to maintain my body though. I guarentee the obese people aren't saying, "Well shit, they cut out the giant drinks...I should probably stop going to the movies, work out, and eat right to keep up with my slow metabolism." Passing this bill does nothing. Plus, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that they don't know that soda is bad for them. Waters are always available, why don't they just drink that??? Because they don't give a shit...They don't give a shit about becoming educated, they don't give a shit about what they eat, they don't give a shit about exercising enough...If I had the worst possible conditions I.E my entire genetic make-up made it very difficult to sustain a low weight, I would STILL do everything within my power to become fit and healthy because it is in MY best interest....Why does the government have any stake in whether or not I become healthy? Because it makes them look good to herd us towards eatting right and it makes them more tax money if we stay alive longer....Just my 2 cents, I could be absolutely wrong on every account...

How is it not? Sugar is toxic to the body and has the same long term negative health benefits as alcohol. Sugar loaded beverages are detrimental to your health in the short term (obesity) and long term(liver damage, type 2 diabetes, High Blood pressure, and cardiovascular damage). We spend so much money trying to counteract the damage sugar does to American citizens. Removing our the major source of sugar intake will save us billions annually.

The extrinsic effects soda consumption is what makes it constitutional.

For 20 years the excepted rule was that fat what the problem not sugar. Also I'm not defending anyone or even agreeing with this law. I'm simply saying that until uve changed societies perspective about sugar in any form including processed grains u won't fix the problem. This problem is much larger than soda. If it is processed and a carbohydrate u will store it as fat unless ur metabolic type will burn it quickly. I'm not removing blame from anyone simply explaining causal roots. Oh and btw I've lost 100 lbs in the past 12 months. I am currently putting some literature together about my journey.

No. For one, no one wants to die of cancer i'm sure. Secondly and very unfortunately, cancer is entirely indiscriminate. Does smoking make it worse? Of course. But I knew of people who've had lung cancer and not smoked a day in their lives and dies at 23. Conversely, I know people who smoke a ton and are just fine and are now in their old age.

being fat is different.

our 7/11s are pretty disgusting, but i've walked into convenience stores and to a bigger extent highway rest stops in the states that have 6 foot high fridges wall to wall carrying more kinds of energy drink, mountain dew than i ever new existed. Canada is by no means a good example on this front, but the states is on another level.

This is very interesting to me.

I say fuck it, I wish they would ban pop where I live. I enjoy it, but it's really unhealthy and I don't need it.

Most of all I wish they would ban energy drinks. There was a city-bylaw going to be passed in my town against them that didn't go through. I love energy drinks, but they're expensive and terrible for me. Yes I have some self control but I'm not in a position where I'm too worried about my health so I buy them anyways.

as far as bottled shit beverages, mexico has the US beat. Mexico City has 20,000,000 people and the tap water for the entire city is not drinkable; by anybody. Literally all drinkable beverages come in plastic bottles.

Being morbidly obese is no different than being a heavy smoker. One has an addiction to nicotine, one has an addiction to food. Both can break their habits relatively easily. Both can potentially die from their addictions, and there are instances of both smokers and fat fucks who live to be ridiculously old, seemingly defying the laws of nature. What is your argument for them being different?

But skim milk is better for you than whole milk, so there's no reason why whole milk should be legal. And you can get all the nutritional benefits of red meat without the negative side-effects by eating chicken or fish. There's no reason why red meat should be legal either (using New York's logic that the government should be making health decisions for you).

No kidding. The people who drink copious amounts of soda will still drink copious amounts of soda, but for a higher price in smaller containers. It will cost them a little more money, and will create a little more trash/recycling material, and everyone will continue on with their lives.

while i certainly agree with what they're trying to accomplish, that is lowering the country's soda consumption, i have a real problem with the manner in which they are going about it. i don't think the government has any right what so ever to regulate this kind of thing. who the fuck is the government to tell you that you can't have 187 ounces of diabetes? they've got no right try and regulate this sort of thing. it's a step towards a very slippery slope.

don't even get me started on that. honestly, i feel they should stay the fuck outta that as well, but that's an argument for another thread.

however, let's not classify heroin and soda as equals. there is absolutely no reason at all what so ever for the government to be regulating soda serving sizes. it's fucking ridiculous. if you can't see that, then I feel sorry for you.

i stopped drinking soda a week ago, i feel good and im not tired anymore. but cmon why would limit the amount of soda someone should drink? it just seems like their wasting their time and should be spending time on more important things.

dam as a person who lives so close to nyc this is pretty anoying. I dont drink a lot of soda but when I do I usually go for a nice big cup since its so rare for me. Fuck fat people. Its pathetic how people label obesity as a medical disease. Yea it is in 1% of the cases. The other 99% ehh not really. Ok so your big boned so what.

EVERYONE knows what it takes to lose weight. Diet, and exercise. Its as simple as that. 98% of people don't have the will or motivation to do this. Losing weight isn't a sceince. Don't eat so much and workout once and a while.

You know so little about nutrition it is astonishing. You need fat (unsaturated AND saturated). Red meat is great for athletes. You have complete proteins, creatine, LOADS of iron-zinc-potasium, a great source of b-vitamins, and has fat. Red meat when eaten in a pinch can be very beneficial.

You would have to be very uneducated in the field of nutrition to state that low fat alternatives are healthier. You need fat in your diet. When you are maintaining your weight 30% of your calories should come from fat. When you are dieting you should be consuming MORE fats. Fat regulates digestion, hormones, increases metabolic rate, and lowers insulin responses.

What do sugary drinks do for you? They give you cancer and destroy your liver

I cant wait until this Nanny cunt Bloomberg is done with his third fucking term, which he had all of his crony city council members change the term laws for. This fucking cocksucker from Boston is so concerned about what his legacy is going to be when he is gone from office that he has jammed more ridicolous laws thru the city council in the past 18 months than any mayor in the last 50 years. The only thing that could be worse is Christine Quinn winning the election and unfortunately she is the favorite.
