I'm not really sure if it's a fashion statement. I'm doubtful Kanye is going to start wearing a balaclava around, it's more of a thug costume for the video I'd say.

It's absolutely a fashion statement. Whether or not he's going to dress himself up in a turban in public as a completely different story though. That stuff is approaching runway fashion in that it's not really going to ever make sense as everyday apparel, but it's meant to make a statement. Looking at the "No Church in the Wild Video", I think the turbans and balaclavas are meant to make a fairly obvious allusion at political unrest and protest in the middle east.

inb4 people tell me I'm retarded and overanalyzed it.

I just saw the no church in the wild video, I think that it definitely alludes to political unrest, but in mercy it just seems like they are trying to look like arab kings or something.
