Freeskiing is a dying fad

luthus001Does this seem true now? I mean events are being cut and terrain parks at places I ski seem to be getting worse and more half assed every year. Summer camps are closing or shrinking. Go to Google trend and search any freeskiing related term you can think of (newschoolers, terrain park, slopestyle, etc etc) and it seems the popularity is falling off a cliff since 2015 or earlier. Do you feel it too? I feel there's less people and less money into freeskiing (and general skiing and snowboarding too) lately despite the supposed economic recovery. You may say F** the money it's all about the soul all about experience, but when park builders, equipment makers and atheletes don't get the money, skiing experience for us can suffer too wouldnt it?

And it continues to dwindle.

raullIve been thinking this for a while now. freeskiing, freestyle skiing, newschool skiing, whatever you want to call it, has really lost the "cool," or the "core" i think it once had. A decade ago it was a new cool sport that people wanted to get involved in, but i see this trend fading. There are so many different genres within freeskiing now that its hard to unite all the skiers together. The numerous fads within skiing will start to disappear and i think it will result in a sort of dwindling out of the sport. I believe terrain parks will still exist and people will still ski pipe, but competitions will lose importance, movies will lose their glamour (already have) and people will become disinterested in general.

Freeskiing will continue, but it will be more of a weekend, not so serious, less sponsors-lets-just-have-fun type of thing...sort of like wakeboarding.

anybody else think this?

snowfinderIt isnt dying if anything it grew into multiple different areas of skiing. whats bad about that? We now have awesome skis and great gear thanks to the freeskiing push. Do you understand that before this whole change in skiing happened skis didnt change for like 50 years?

DolanReloadedI think trump being president has made people not care as much about what other people think about them which lowers the priority of showing off your skiing skills in the terrain park and people are just having fun skiing in the trees and smoking weed

raullI agree that backcountry skiing is gaining popularity. but terrain park, pipe, urban skiing is dying. For those saying "slopestyle is in the olympics now, so it must be gaining popularity," well so is curling, synchronized swimming, and equestrian dressage.

the comments I made in the OP are still valid.
- Comps? couldn't name a single player in the X-games this year besides Henrik.
- Movies - I heard Level1 quit, I went to a TGR premier this year - might as well call it Warren Miller wannabe movie.
- People becoming disinterested? - the park I grew up riding used to be on a main trail of the mountain and packed with features and riders - now its on a side trail and a ghost town with small jumps and rails.

eheathSounds like you're part of the problem, if you didn't know anyone in xgames it means you're completely out of touch on skiing, which would explain your second point about movies. The past two years there have been more amatuer urban, park and backcountry ski films, you're just not paying attention.

Your third point is completely invalid, your personal experience at one tiny resort literally means nothing my guy.
