after the success of last seasons thread and the new season only a short wait away after the euros i think it could be time to kick this off

di matteo is set to be confirmed as the new chelsea manager, will he work miracles again?

who's your team and how well do you think they'll do this year?


i'm a sunderland fan and i think we will be top 10 and maybe just sneak into the europa league

I don't think you really understand my post fully. I never stated that Messi does not have the skills, nor did I say he had passing and vision. When I say well rounded, I mean can literally do everything the game has to offer. That is something that Bale and Ronaldo have and Messi doesn't. Messi is too short to have a good presence in the air like Ronaldo and Bale. And Messi also has a pretty weak weak foot where Ronaldo and Bale have strong weak feet.

I'm not so sure, but it could end up being beneficial. They'd probably need to get top 4 in order for it to happen.

Also, Wilshere was terrible today compared to usual. Arsenal dominated that first half up to those two goals. Those two defensive lapses were absolutely awful.

If Arsenal got bought it would be so bittersweet. More money, but I personally am not a fan of the Middle East owning so many team. Not a racist, but it just doesn't seem right.

I though Wilshere was playing alright. Bale totally schooled the defense with his run. World class run if you ask me. Even top level defenders would struggle to read what he did. Lennons run on the other hand, was a definite laps in concentration.

Great match today. Real was better overall. ManU should stop bitching. Nani deserved Red. Their team sucks except Vidic, Van Persie and Welbeck. So many overrated players in their squad its incredible.

Bale would be an excellent addition to their team. Actually bringing some quality in there.
He is incredible but I don't see him at a level with Ronaldo, Messi, Ozil or Xavi. He yet has to proof his skills in the Champions Lague over a few seasons.

Arsenal should buy Götze and Reus if they want to be on top again, not matter whether Dortmund wants to have 50 or a 100 million for both. They are going to be the best players in the world 3-4 years from now.

bit of a strict red, but would have been far too lenient as a yellow. Everyone's arguing over intent, but the fact remains it was a violent foul, which warrants a red. Even under the very best conditions, it was still a studs up challenge into the ribs of a player who clearly had the ball controlled.

You wanna see a bullshit red look up van persie against barcelona.




As for this whole Arsenal buyout thing...I'm all for it. It's not great change from tradition since the team is already owned by a billionaire. The only difference is that these ones looks to be proactive; bring down ticket prices while bringing in top quality players. Stan Kroenke currently has an interest in trying to figure out which team it is that he even owns.

I would love to see them buy both. That would be incredible. But I just can't see it happening. I can't even see Dortmund giving up one of those players, especially if Arsenal don't even get into the Champions League.

Not a red imo, absolutely no intent or force put behind it. A yellow yes, but a red is absurd. Mourinho himself went and said to SAF it was a bad call mid game. Mourinho also said something along the lines of the better team lost today in his presser. Hope Madrid win it all now.

english media making a huge deal out of that because its their darling club. i think it was harsh and left them with 30mins a man down. they reacted badly though, they were sitting deep and playing on the counter anyways so it shouldnt have changed much. United only have themselves to blame for not putting chances away.

over two legs i think the slightly better team won

best assessment I've seen was about the tactics change by each manager immediately after the card. (this middle bit is taken from a different source, not my own words)


56 minutes in, red card.
Mourinho put in modric 2 minutes after the red, switched to 3 defenders and removed a holding midfielder with a yellow card. This served to add possession and dominate the attack.

Fergie did nothing.

68 minutes in, Madrid is now up 2-1.
Mourinho takes out an attacker (Ozil) 2 minutes later, and puts in another defender (Pepe) to revert to 4 defenders. Mission accomplished, game over.

Ferguson put in Rooney 5 minutes after they'd gone down by 1 as a desperate attempt to recover.




It was smart by mourinho. He didn't plan to get 3-4 goals and risk a counter attack cutting open the thinner defense. Instead he bossed the midfield, didn't give united a chance to test his defense, scored the goals he needed, then immediately went back to defense. If anything, it pisses me off that never in 100 years would Arsene do anything like this.

'masterclass', hardly, he changed to a more attacking formation allowed by having an extra man to commit to attacks. If real madrid hadn't won that match there would have been some serious questions asked in madrid.

fergie changed nothing because his team waas already working really well, and continued to work well despite being a man down, unfortunately they were beaten by an impossible shot by modric, and one of real madrid's best attacking moves of the season.

how exactly did it work well, when less than 15 minutes after the red, they'd conceded 2 goals and were on the back foot the entire time?

Granted both goals were exceptionally good, but fergie changed nothing despite now having 1 less man while mourinho went full on attack. And they paid the price for it.

they were not on the back foot the whole time, after the two goals were scored real madrid starting playing more defensively allowing man u to attack forcing some good saves from diego lopez, yeah they conceded two goals, against probably the best team in the world at the moment, with only 10 men! what more can you expect, they didn't concede any more goals after the those 3 or four minutes and continued to play good football. The only thing i could suggest would have been bringing rooney on earlier.

wouldn't be the first time a top premier league footballer went away for awhile.

I was too young to remember it, but Arsenal's greatest ever captain, Tony Adams, missed almost 4 months of the 1991 season due to being in prison for drunk driving.


back in the day when you could be considered one of the best players on the field despite playing drunk, smoking cigarettes at halftime, and eating a steak before the match.

A bit off topic, but since we now get BEIN sport on our TV I've been watching more Ligue 1 and damn, Valbuena is good. Also Ligue 1 as a whole is incredibly entertainging

I want to say NBC. They're gonna make a new sports channel or something I think. Pretty hyped myself as NBC's picture quality also seems so good imo.

in terms of competition, I think it's the best league out there. The title has pretty much already been sealed in every other major european league. Or you have the same few teams dominating, spending tons of money.

French ligue 1 on the other hand, once lyon stopped dominating, there's been a different champion and runner up every year.


Mixed bag on psg...happy that France is finally doing well in the CL and has a big money team...but at the same time, for comparison's sake...PSG spent almost as much on players this summer as my french club spent on their new stadium. So I'm afraid an era is ending.

Yeah I just started following like a couple months ago, but even the lower teams seem reasonably competitive.
I hope PSG doesn't ruin it, I don't think the will because from what I saw from their game against Marseille not long ago, it was incredibly close and in my opinion Marseille played better even though they lost.
Lastly, do you know wtf happened to Gourcuff? I remember he was like the next big thing a couple years back, but then just this weekend I saw him on the bench.

right well that just made no sense. Thanks, mobile! But what I'm trying to say is that you're no more intelligent/passionate about the game simply by virtue of being from manchester.


PSG isn't quite a huge distance ahead yet, but they will be. It's an easy win-win for players. Huge salaries, a domestic league/cups that PSG should have no trouble winning, and they're competitive in Europe.

Gourcuff is the most form based player I've ever seen. When he's hot, he's unbeatable, but when he isn't, he may as well play on an amateur side. He also relies heavily on confidence and once he's lost it, he seems to have trouble getting it back. He's been on of my favorite players for years, which is why I really want him to find a good club and good manager because he could dominate again.

Whaaaaat! and they got Formula 1 too?! I'm so stoked, trying to follow the EPL without Fox Soccer in the US has always been near impossible. Hopefully it'll be free but if not I'm down to pay.
