yes, everyone gets it. Life is hard, people aren't as entitled as they like to think they are. Most people know that.

You gotta go and be an ass about it the day they've finally attained their first real accomplishment in life?

Just give the usual speech. Life is hard, be prepared to work, it's going to be harder than you think, congratulations, done. I could make a grad speech last 20 seconds.

I agree, for once, with fujarome. This shits a waste of time. Nobody needs someone breathing down your throat on graduation day - you'll get more than enough of that in your career. Everyone knows when you graduate high school you're not even close to on top of the world... and given the speech, I'd imagine the speaker isn't either. Life IS hard, but you don't need a dickhead at graduation letting you know that. You roll with the punches and make the best of what you can.

After looking this guy up, I'm shocked. All I've learned is jealousy seems to be a bitch. (1) I hope the students heard his message... and planned on not ending up like him, (2) in the position he's in, he shouldn't even be considered to give a commencement speech, (3) hopefully he's fired. There are plenty more qualified individuals who don't mourn on their own failures, ready to teach.

He's right, high school is a joke, even if you got all As and took AP courses, you probably still didn't try very hard. One big thing that hit me my first year of college was that HS was the biggest waste of time, we spent an entire year, going to class for 7 hrs a day, learning the same amount of material that is covered in 18 credit hours in college. 6 classes, 3 hrs a week, for 4 months vs 7 classes a day, 7 hrs a week for 9 months. What the fuck high school, Y U LRN SO SLOW.

At least he took it upon himself to give them real advice in a situation where that's exactly what he's there to do. Sounds like a school in a place with plenty of kids who feel entitled. If they were upset about that then they missed the whole message. Like you said everyone knows life is hard, the same way everyone knows that they've achieved something that day. They don't new someone to go in there and blow smoke up their ass they all have plenty of grad parties afterward for that.

wepost sowwy.....but i love this speech..this guys the man. Kids are treated to gently this generation, they need to work hard and learn to not have everything handed to them because they are considered "special"..like he said there are so many talented kids in every aspect of the world out there..which hense the talent does not seem as outstanding because so many people are like them as well. Sorta gives you a new, realistic perspective on things

just out of curiosity how old are you? because if your an active member of ns i cant imagine you are much older than this current generation of kids.

this speech is a good reality check, but honestly was it an appropriate time for a reality check? high school graduation is supposed to be a fun carefree time with all of your friends. chances are these kids will be getting a big reality check simply by entering the new college atmosphere with so many more people

But when is a good time for a reality check? When these kids are half way through their first semester of college, failing every class?

When will be another time that he can make a speech that will impact all those kids at a time?

I know HS kids don't see it, I didn't see it when I was there, but your HS graduation ISN'T that big of a moment in your life. HS is easy. Anyone can do it. All you have to do is show up. Look at all the fuck-ups you graduated with, the ones who never did anything. No sports, no extra circulars, no AP classes.

And it's especially poignant in this time of the world. NOTHING is easy. Finding entry level jobs is hard. Thinking that you're going to become some hot shot, making a bunch of money and benefits with only your HS diploma is false. Companies now days are looking for people who are motivated, willing to work hard, and want to do the best work they can. The world doesn't give a crap how many lacrosse goals you scored or how many songs are on your ipod. Kids now days need to realize this NOW, before they get in too deep in college, when they can't dig themselves out of their own hole.

im almost 20...going into my sophomore year of college, so yea I'm relatively close in age to them. The town where Im from a lot of people do need reality checks though. They are sheltered in this small white rich town thinking that they are the best..when really there are many people from around the world with all different backgrounds that they have not yet met or experienced life with. Highschool is such a short time if your life, and for me at least was not anything special whatsoever, nor did I really enjoy it. This could be just because Im not a fan of where I'm from or the people I grew up with, but really people need to experience things and live life before they think about how great they are, or even what the definition of special or great really means...just my opinion on it

The thing is, not everyone gets it. It seems like common sense, but far too many people never grow to realize this well into adulthood. It's nice to have someone lay down some truth rather than the give some trite speech that is going to be ignored by everyone due to its monotony.

you bring up a good point, but in this day and age (hopefully) most kids already know they aren't getting a job easily (especially in this economy). I just think that it was somewhat of a downer because he said less of life is hard so your going to need to work you asses off to be somewhat successful and more of, frankly, life sucks.

But, what do I know i don't go to that highschool

I feel like this speech should be at freshman orientation and not at a graduation. Having said that it was very well said and just about every high school kid thinks they are something special at some point. Hell I know I did, especially my freshman year, 3 years later I could care less and am "one of those fuck ups" that eheath talked about. In conclusion high school is a joke, I do the minimum to get by and I will still have that same piece of paper that we all will have.
