Losing Weight

i know a lot of people will not care about this because so many people on here are skinny as fuck already. But this thread is more for the chubbers on NS, or people that just want to shed a few pounds, even though this diet is more for people that really want to lose weight. Like myself.

But some of you may have seen my pic in LM, i have just recently gone on a weight loss journey and have lost 45 lbs to the day.

I worked out and tried to eat healthy obviously, but it just wasnt working as well as i wanted. So i talked to my good friend who is on a diet right now, called HCG. Some of you may have herd of it, some not.

But what it is, is you take these drops 4 times day that open up your metabolism and starts to take out all the fat from your body. These drops also are make you feel full, and a good thing why it does this is because on this diet, you are on a 500 calorie a day diet. Yup, only 500 calories, but with these drops and the food you eat, doesnt make you ever feel hungry.

So i went on this diet May 1st and the first 2-3 days were hell, it is really hard to get used to eating such a small amount of food in a day. But it is damn worth it in the end. And on this diet they say you are not supposed to work out..... which is completely strange to me. but if you work out to much, your body will go into starvation mode, and instead of getting rid of all the fat, it just keeps all the fat because your body thinks you are starving. But i didnt listen to that, i cant stand paying a monthly membership to YMCA and not use it. So everyday i ran a mile, and did very low weights for about 10-20 mins.

Whats also good about running everyday was that i have dropped 3.5 minutes off my mile time, so that was another awesome thing to notice.

Last thing, this diet you can only get from doctors and you will spend about 600 bucks for the liquid in a shot form... or you can buy it at MaxxNutrition like i did. DONT buy it at walmart or anything else.. IT WILL NOT WORK.

So yep, anybody that has anymore questions about it or losing weight, im your man. I will be off the drops for good now and will be on a maintenance phase where i slowly start to introduce fats, and oils and bread and everything else.

There is actually very very little out there substantiating Paleo. Even Cordain flounders when asked to supply more than 3 or 4 extremely weak studies about it. There are tons of diets that consistently rank well above it. In fact, most nutrition professionals consistently put Paleo last on their lists of diets simply due to the fact that there's almost no science, but only hypotheses backing it. There is no evidence that it assists with long or short term weight loss, prevents heart disease or diabetes, or that it is any more effective (in any capacity) than one of about 20 diets I can think of off the top of my head.

Congrats, anybody have any tips for putting on weight? Kinda weird but I'm 5'9 130lbs and I want to get up to 150 I eat over 2500 calories a day and eat mostly steak but I don't gain shit

there's modified paleo- can't remember what it's called-lacto-paleo? that includes dairy, whole grains, etc--similar to the FINAL stage of atkins. That is what I was referring to, but the line has become so blurred that anything that even resembles the paleo diet is called "paleo" unless people really want to get into it. It's basically un-processed food from the earth. No refined carbs, excess sugar, or processed food. Lean protein, veggies, whole grains, healthy fats (omega 3s), limited fruits, etc.

buy a shake mix- whey based mix- that is for bulking up- available at any health store make shakes in between meals.

Simply gaining weight is easy. Gaining muscle means that you will inevitably have to work out in some way, shape, or form. Resistance training coupled with an increase in food intake is generally the easiest way to gain weight. You could lift weight and eat Twinkies and it would work, but I think I'd recommend lean proteins and veggies first :)

Agreed, "Paleo" has become the term for "general health". Modified Paleo is not Paleo in any facet as it violates the basic premis of the diet.

Generally following Paleo is certainly a good start if you do nothing though. More veggies, no sugar, and lean meats is basically what every good athlete does anyway.

my girl just finished a run on the paleo diet and she lost several inches off of her stomach and hips. she hasn't changed anything in her workout routine - only diet. i still give her shit and call it a hippie diet, etc., but it has proven quite effective.

her old man shed 20 lbs with the paleo diet as well. as much as I'd like to say it's a crock of shit because I love me some grains, it really does seem to work. and honestly it's got to be safer than popping female pregnancy hormones, i.e. hcg.

I think the idea of eating paleo is pretty decent, but some people are way to fanatical about it. I don't think you can go wrong eating lots of veggies, a bunch of lean meat and limiting sugars.

As for OP, congrats on losing the weight, but don't think there is any way you can convince me this is healthy (not that I'm asking you to). I'm a big fan of olympic lifting (still getting into it) and there's no way I would be able to throw up half decent weights on 500 cal. a day.

I'm 6'4" 157lbs and I eat 3500-4000 calories a day, then bike 20-30 miles to burn 2000+. I have the worst time staying away from carbs. i dont need to loose weight i just want to get down to just eating 2000-2200 calories a day cause i fucking hate biking now.

shouldn't be too hard to get down to that many calories. Eat lean protein, veggies, and high-fat omega 3s like avocado, olive oil, fish oil, and nuts. Not trying to sound condescending, because I have a way to go myself, but balancing calories and counts in terms of fat/carbs/proteins becomes second nature once you start memorizing what is made of what.

Congrats bro, I too dropped about 45 pounds my senior year of high school. I cut calorie intake to about 1800-2000 a day though, and forced myself to run by joining the cross country team at school my junior and senior year. By god almighty did i suck at it, but it got me running about 10 miles a day. Was fantastic. I never did many weights though, decided freshman year of college to pick that up quite a bit. Went from 140 to 165 and now Im holding pretty steady there. In the best shape of my life, and I absolutely love it.

To everyone saying weight loss is just a result of calories in vs calories out: NO!

It's more about your bodies reaction to the type of food you put in it than the ammount of food you put in it. The Paleo, Slow Carb and Atkins diets all work because they keep your blood glucose (sugar) low and as a result insulin levels low.

Put simply; Your body must maintain a particular blood sugar level. It does this via the pancreas which releases 2 hormones depending on blood sugar levels:

-Insulin is released when blood sugar levels are high. It reduces blood sugar by storing glucose in muscle, liver and fat cells as glycogen. Muscle and liver cells don't hold much glycogen, fat cells however do.

-Glucagon is released when blood sugar levels are low. It increases blood sugar levels by breaking down glycogen stored in the liver and fat cells into glucose and releasing this glucose into the blood stream.

From this you can see the calories in vs calories out model of fat loss is true to an extent but what you eat is more important than how much you eat.

If you want to lose weight on a sustainable diet I would suggest following these guide lines (the slow carb diet):

-No white carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice, beer, soft drinks, oats and potato.

-Eat at least 30 grams of protein with every meal.

-Drink lots of water

-No milk - milk is low in carbohydrates but causes massive insulinemic (release of insulin) response in the body.

-No fruit or soft drinks - Fructose is one of the easiest sugars for the body to break down and therefore causes big spikes in blood sugar.

-Eat as much as you want of foods you are allowed to eat. i.e. vegetables, red meat, eggs, white meat etc.

-Allow one day per week when you can eat anything you want without restriction. (This keeps your metabolism high and stops you from straying from the diet due to temptation of sweets etc.)

This is much more healthy than speeding up your metabloism with a drug and then cutting your food intake.


Anyway, I hope this helps you to keep the weight off and well done on what you have achieved already.

Having less oxygen in your blood makes it overstimulate so you body works harder to move blood there for you lose wait. Not stupid if your implying my English is bad it's because it's my 2 nd language. So no a good post yours was a waste of ns.

it's all about the combination of food and exercise. you won't lose weight healthily or easily by straight running for miles and miles everyday, nor will you lose weight healthily by eating barely anything.

put the two together in moderation and you'll get there with time.




fun fact, running/jogging/walking is actually one of the WORST ways to lose weight.

^ after how many years of hockey, soccer, tennis and I was a catcher in baseball, my knees scream fuuuu the whole time while on distance runs. Can't even jog on the road barely anymore. Running in a track or grass seems to help me because it's less impact but if you're looking for healthy endurance training get a bike people. Wayyy better for you.

i'm not saying paleo is the best diet out there, i'll be the first one to call it a fad diet. you can't really fault cordain that there has not been much research done on the diet either.

did the usda do research before making the food pyramid? probably- does that make it a great guideline for healthy eating? not necessarily

for me paleo has been easy to follow, i don't have to measure everything i eat, my grocery trips are quick, and i'm able to have my cheat meals from time to time. i've lost 20 lbs in the past year (10 due to following a strict diet, 10 after starting paleo). right now i'm down to 165 and weigh about what i weighed my junior year in college (7 years ago). i thought it would be worth OP looking into as it's certainly better than eating 500 calories a day

My dad followed this, and has lost 75 pounds since like November. I haven't seen him in a few months and I'm guessing he'll look like a new man when I do. It seems easy to follow as well. It just lists foods to eat a lot of, foods to eat in moderation, and foods not to eat.

yeah im trying to gain a tad more weight its just trying to control my intake. i just eat too much shitty foods. i guess its time to empty out the pantry of all major carbs

I've been type I diabetic for almost 20 years, and I know many other type I diabetics. I eat carbohydrates, candy, chips, you name it. I drink milk, I drink alcohol, and generally don't worry too much about WHAT it is I'm eating, as long as I don't eat too much of it. I've always been in shape and athletic. It comes down to calories in vs. calories burned. It's that simple. Fuck all this insulin bullshit and fad dieting that you're talking about.

Jesus dude, that sounds rough. I showed up to pre-season soccer one year 10 lbs over weight and had to go on a 2500 calorie per day diet to lose it (had to listen to coaches bc I was on scholarship). I lost the weight in a little less than three weeks but they were pretty much the worst of my life. I was constantly a mix of incredibly hungary, tired, and grumpy.

I cannot imagine 500 calories a day. Even without exercise I think it would kill me.

You don't know what you're talking about. If you didn't eat that poison and shit you could reverse your chronic disease. An alkalizing diet+vitamins and supplements=win. Many people have done it, but I guess just keep saying fuck it.

You can lose weight with any diet if you limit calories, but as I said before it's pretty similar to your general healthy diet. It's not designed for weight loss, but if you're obese then you would definitely start losing weight when you started watching what you eat.

exactly, i ate somewhat healthy, but no where near how i am eating now.. And i have completely changed my lifestyle of how i eat and intake.. And wish people would realize that. And i don't know if you considered me obese in the first pic.. in my eyes it seemed like i was, and yea. Losing weight from my change of diet obviously paid off.

Hrmm a type 1 diabetic that has no trouble keeping weight off........funny that. I am worried for you if you really are a diabetic and refuse to accept the role insulin plays in your body.

Your body doesn't produce insulin. (a hormone that as I have said, is responsible for the storage of glucose in fat cells). You have to regulate your blood sugar by injecting insulin and monitoring what you eat. If you were to eat a whole lot of carbohydrates and inject insulin as was required then you would get fat just like someone who has a working pancreas.

If you were to stop eating high GI carbohydrates I would place a solid bet that you would not have to inject nearly as much insulin.

At the highest level calories in vs calories out does work but as I have shown there is a lot more to it and more effective ways to lose weight and keep it off than by starving yourself.

Some of the things you are saying I completely agree with... One really important thing though is the difference between eating just to loose weight and eating HEALTHY and getting the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. If you consume foods with those nutrients, your body functions in the proper way and it can burn fat and build muscle. Low fat milk is incredibly important, especially in younger years. Yogurt is fantastic because it contains a lot of acidophilus. It is important to eat some carbs, especially around times of exercise.
Fruit is incredibly important to eat... I've heard so much b.s. about how it's just sugar and fruit is actually bad for your body. Yes, fruit is sugar, but it's NATURAL sugar, and beyond that, fruits have many vitamins and antioxidants which are very good for us. Blueberries are a terrific example. It is the ARTIFICAL fruity drinks and fruit juices that you want to stay away from, unless they have no additional sugar added (fresh fruit smoothies, fresh squeezed orange juice... both great!)
By the way, it's better to allow yourself one or two craving breaks daily rather than allowing yourself to eat whatever you want in one day... that's a bit of a trauma to your body. Want a bag of chips or an ice cream cone? Not a huge deal, your body can take it. Eat only super healthy stuff 6 days a week and then all of a sudden eat fries, ice cream, cake, a burger, bread, more cake, chips... what have you, your body is not gunna feel so great, let alone your stomach.
Put simply, if you eat HEALTHY, your body will function properly, and with good exercise you will be in shape.

Dub post but calorie counts are not a huge deal. Who cares if something has 500 or 750 cals? If it's healthy and has nutrients your body needs, then you should eat it. Obviously you don't want to eat too many calories, but as long as you exercise and aren't eating junk, you definitely don't have to be counting your calories during every meal on weight watchers.

I would agree with you on all those points if the aim was maintaining a steady weight but not for losing weight.

As far as fruit goes; natural sugar is still sugar and you can get all of the vitamins and nutrients from other sources so there is no real upside to them in weight loss.

I do agree with your point on carbs and exercise and this is where I would eat fruit (bananas especially). If you are going to be doing exercise then I would advocate eating carbs either before or 20 mins after a workout.

With regard to the cheat day and causing trauma to the body, that is the point of it. After a few days of not needing to process large amounts of excess glucose your metabolism will begin to drop. By loading the blood with carbs you get a bit of a kick start every 6/7 days. If you were to have 2 cheat meals per day then you are still getting spikes in your blood sugar level but your metabolism will drop and fat loss will not be as great.

Nice results OP!! Good to see people who try more than once if they don't succeed. Does anyone here have rapid weight fluctuations. Usually I way around 134 pounds. Hopped on the scale on the weekend, no clothes weighed 142.... Same time next week I'm down to 132, tried it on a few different scales as well :O surely my shits are not that large.

fruit and grains are negotiable foods. meats, and veggies are not.

Have a cheat meal every couple of days, and make it fairly small, but full of goodies. you wont want to gorge yourself at each of these smaller meals as much as you would if you had to wait a whole week for your EPIC CHEAT DAAAAYY!

Gaining and losing weight is all a simple math problem. calories in vs calories out. the adjusted amount may vary in magnitudes from person to person, but at the end of the day, this is what actually controls your weight. people hate hearing this, and admittedly it is a simplified view. But, it still does apply to everyone.
