Lens Choice?

I am very new to photography and I am wondering which would be the better lens for a noob Filmer

none of those. get a used tamron 17-50 f2.8, you can find them for a little over $300 on ebay. This is assuming you don't have any other lenses, and you need something for general use.

i want the lens for 60% filming and 40% photo don't want to spend too much though  at most $300

this is really your best option unless you want to throw down some more cash. i have it and although it's not my favorite lens, it's well worth the money

this will run you just over $300, but it will be good for almost anything. It is constant f2.8, its wide end is wide enough for follow cams, and it has a decent range

If you really really dont wanna dish out the cash for a tam 17-50, then look into sogma 18-55. Or 18-50. I cant remember the name. its variable aperture but is a step up from the kit lens.

they also have an 18-50 fixed 2.8, not sure how much more it is than the variable aperture one

They're going to regret it later too. Also to the guy above me, how does it suck for photos? I love mine, It's pretty damn sharp especially for 400 dollars. Unless you wanna be one of those guys and view every photo at 100% crop it's more than fine.

I literally have barely money and my previous experience includes a Go pro for filming and a Nikon point&shoot for photo. Soo at this point i am as Noob as it gets...

it's not very sharp and the colors are pretty meh, not a big deal for video, but for the resolution of photos its not great

Everyone bags so hard on the kit lens and its not THAT bad. If you're just filming skiing, it will be fine until you're ready to upgrade (which in most cases means you have the money to upgrade ha). As long as you dial in your exposure and focus correctly and have a stable shot, the kit lens will be OK.

I first saw this video from a friend of mine, could have sworn it was L-series...

Shot on a 7D w/ 18-55 kit and a flycam nano. Looks good to my eyes.

i don't know anything about filming, but seriously the kit lens really isn't bad at all for photography. as people have said already, fair enough it's not the best in the world but for the price it is very good, and it's really good to learn with. if you can afford something better, go for it, but if you can't, be happy with it, because it's really nowhere near as bad as everyone says.

and i'm pretty sure all that's been said already so i apologise

this! the kit lens can be sharp. you just have to make the camera do the work like eheath mentioned ^ exposure and focus is key. i use the 18-135 kit lens on a 60D and with the right light, i am very happy with the results it produces.

i was happy with how the quality of this video turned out with that lens...(at least until the end inside the house)


and i was happy with the lens on this picture...could have had a tiny bit faster shutter speed tho

Kit lens is absolutely a good starting lens, you will out grow it, and at that time you will want to upgrade which is where I just got to. Speaking of which, if anyone wants to buy a used 18-55 hit me up. Also, does anyone know where I can get a trust worthy tamron for around 350$?
