Pentagon releases results of 13,000-mph test flight over Pacific

The results are in from last summer’s attempt to test new technology that would provide the Pentagon with a lightning-fast vehicle, capable of delivering a military strike anywhere in the world in less than an hour.

In August the Pentagon's research arm, known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, carried out a test flight of an experimental aircraft capable of traveling at 20 times the speed of sound.


After reaching an undisclosed altitude, the aircraft jettisoned from its protective cover atop the rocket, then nose-dived back toward Earth, leveled out and glided above the Pacific at 20 times the speed of sound, or Mach 20.

But it was ended about nine minutes into flight for unknown reasons. The launch had received worldwide attention and much fanfare, but officials didn’t provide much information on why the launch failed.

we'll either find out in 20 years, when the technology has been irrelevant for 40 years....or just never.


it really is incredible to think about what the government could be up to that we'll never know about. I'm most curious about the aurora bomber since there's the most evidence about it...even though supposedly they stopped using it years ago.

One day it will be available to the public. I work in the DoD. They said their timetable for public transport at Mach 20 is by 2032.

Seeing something go 200 mph is cool... but 13,000 mph?!?

You're right. I mean we owe China so much fucking money. If we blew them up, which would be hard to do considering their size and upcoming military power, we wouldn't have to pay that.. but now that I think about it, then other people would get pissed and we wouldn't get their resources and imports.. so that would be a bad idea.

But again, we never REALLY have to pay them. We can just be like, "Oh yeah, we owe you 10 trillion dollars, we will pay you." but then we never really have to pay them.

And for Russia, they are close to us with Nuclear Power, but we could beat them.

it would be tough, but what about a rail gun? Considering it is already traveling at that speed, you really wouldnt need any extra speed to produce a projectile that would go through anything
