Exactly this.  Women's park skiing doesn't bring in enough money to justify having their own course.  Maybe someday, and it'd be cool to see, but not yet.

I think courses should have two kickers on the jumps. Give them the option to hit a smaller jump at least. Everywhere used to do that, I wonder why it changed? Anyone know?

Euro X had that for at least one of the jumps. I makes sense. You can choose to hit it, but you just won't get scored as well. Sort of like hitting boxes over rails.

I don't think a different slopestyle would be a good idea. Anyways, girls never seem to have problems with the rails, the only concern in the article is about jumps. But as far as I can remember, I've rarely seen girls hit the small side of jumps when 2 take offs were available. I watched the whole Euro X where the second jump had 2 takeoffs and I'm pretty sure none of the girls used it.(I'm just checked and none of them in the top 3 used it). You can see Kaya choose the big jump at 0.45(sick run).


And for the injury concern, it's really hard to tell why a higher percentage of girls get hurt. One of the explanation I could see is that these days, most of the guys who compete at X Games/Dew Tour level spend a shitload of time doing other training than skiing(gym, cycling, tramps, etc.). Maybe, there's is a smaller percentage of girls who do as much training outside the slopes so they are more at risk of getting injured.(Many top girls train as hard as guys tho, not trying to bash).

Just wait until the roided up man-ladies of Ukraine switch from Shot Put to Slopestyle, powerhouses with no neck weighing in at 300lbs charging through the course as the spandex rips off of them as they fly through the air, clearing every jump with ease.


We need bulkier skier girls.

I realize that in the comps that when given the option of a smaller jump they choose the bigger gap but i think they feel they need to hit the bigger side to compete with the other girls in the comp. they might do easier tricks but off a bigger jump. so i think that if they were only given one option of a smaller jump, they would throw some harder tricks

Kaya did the switch 1080 about 5-6 years ago, yet its still being considered the first ever.

I am not sure why this is why it is. I wish girls were also throwing doubles.

I don't get that "girls can't clear bigger jumps" argument. Henrik Harlaut is a midget and he slays them big kickers.

And I fucking hate the physical argument. Of course women don't have the same natural strength as man have, but they can achieve a lot by working out hard. Look at Lindsey Vonn, she has Legs of Steel ;) . A friend of mine does switch 12s on 80 feet jumps and seems to me close to anorexia. Can't be that hard to spin without being ripped like the dumont.

For all the people claiming no fully developed women but only 12 year old chinese girls without brests can participate in world class gymnastics competitions due to some inner balance point changing during puberty, check out
Alicia Sacramone. 

(btw: she's hot as fuck)

I would like to see half the people posing in this thread hit a 70 foot jump before they bitch about girls wanting something smaller (zing!). To counter act my own argument, I understand that most of them are being sponsored to do so.

I thought the points of girls vs guys tees in the LPGA and softball vs. baseball were pretty relevant.

My main though is that there just isn't enough female competitors pushing hard enough. If you can win 1st with a cork 7, why bother bringing it to 10? Why not a double? Because there is no sense in risking injury on a much more progressive trick when you can get the same prize from something simpler.

If it actually makes girls throw down harder, I would be all for a his and hers takeoff, with guys sending 70 footers and girls on 55 footers.

A 70fter would be awesome! Especially one built as nice as they do for the major comps.

Big jumps aren't really that scary, just don't mess up the speed/land on your head and you'll be fine.

This is the issue.

In the examples given, there are variables that are easy to change. In WNBA, buying smaller balls costs probably about $50, softball can be played on existing fields, and even changing markings on a pitch is fairly easy and doesn't cost much. The same with getting new gymanstics equipment - it is an investment, and can be used for years in training and competitions.

It would cost resorts thousands of dollars in lost revenue to shut another run off, and then it would be incredibly costly, not to mention time consuming to blow enough snow for a second set up, then to bash it, and build booters, as well as replicating all the existing rails.

This is a non-issue.

The way around this is to build two lips, and not penalize a rider for taking the smaller hit if they throw a more technical trick. This can work in favor of progression as well by still giving the option of the larger jump. A second take-off is a relatively inconsequential expense with regards to feature building.

Cool, smaller jumps then. If womens freeskiing needs to go in that direction, then it should. It doesnt effect me either way, I dont see any point in being strongly for or against it as a guy skier, unless I was really needing to be an attention whore.

yeah umm... that's an incredibly stupid idea. if you don't award someone for hitting the bigger side then what's the point of taking the added risk? they would all throw down on the smaller jumps and the smaller the jumps, the less shit you can do on it. it would be the worst slope comp. of all time.

Easy.

The person who steps up to the big jump and tosses the same trick as cleanly on the big jump then takes the win.

Perfect Cork 7 on a 70 footer > Perfect Cork 7 on a 50 footer > sloppy 5 on a 70 footer.

How this is a difficult concept to you, I don't understand.

if the only reason they're not progressing is because of fear over bigger, and very fucking well constructed jumps then they don't deserve to win comps. being a pussy is acceptable when you work to ski but not when your work is skiing.

IMO the weather is a much bigger factor for the women than the size of the jumps. In good conditions the girls have no problems with 70 fters, but throw some wind and snow in the mix and all but the top 3 to 5 have issues with the course. Honestly this happens to the guys too, but I think that the men can handle knuckling and over shooting a little better.
Live TV is horrible for slopestyle - it doesn't allow for any adjustment for conditions, it's just go time whenever the camera is rolling with a general lack of concern for the riders unless conditions are just absolutely awfull. With the bigger contests having to get through 4 separate events there really isn't any time to wait for conditions to improve.
As for separate size wedges, most builders have stopped building them because a majority of the women don't ever hit the smaller wedges. Also by placing a smaller wedge on a jump you decrease the width of the bigger side which limits carving your tricks and also makes the line between jumps tighter - you can't drift right on the first jump if the second jump has a skinny big side on the left.

This is exactly the setup up my local park. Most kickers have two or even three takeoffs of different heights with smaller takeoffs set forward of the big ones. No need for two courses. And it makes progression a lot easier when you have the same runup and landing to get familiar with.

O-M-G. I have agreed with everything that you have said in this thread. It's a miracle!
But really, everything "fucking" said is true.

If there is an option for a smaller jump, and there is no reward for a bigger jump, then why take the bigger jump? Also, if the bigger jump is rewarded, it's just too complicated to judge. The only doable idea is to make two separate courses, without an option. But that requires too many resources and is just not doable by any resort and is not logical to do.

There is a ton of talk on how men's and women's competition in freesking should be combined to end sexism between the two. But then you look at something like this, where there is legitimate data showing and explaining, basically how it is being separated. Bigger jumps, new tricks being thrown down, more progression in one gender, and ultimately you have a better side.
