Question for Tele skiers:

I'm saving up for a set of touring skis. Probs Atomic Automatics (looks SO FUCKING SICK IMO)

Now i've always wanted a tele set up, i've tele skied twice and i loved it. But never in powder.

and here's where i ask you.

I want a touring set up as well, so i'm between a dynafit set up (plum guides) orr A tele set up.

I'm kinda leaning towards a tele set up. BUT i know nothing of tele skiing. I'm 5'7 135 pounds if that helps. I would need boot suggestions (yes i'm going to a bootfitter, i just want to look at prices and stuff) and most importantly. Tele bindings that are good for touring and skiing.


Please post tips/helpful reminders, whatever.

 those O1's are great tele bindings and they tour really well too.  theyre also pretty burly and can charge really big skis (i had a pair on volkl chopsticks) especially if you get the rediculously stiff cartridges.  also it terms of touring, you have a lot more mobility in tele boots than an alpine/at boot.  your foot is able to move a lot more naturally with the bellowed toes of a tele boot.

I think you might be frustrated riding big hefty skis that you could normally rip on, only being able to ski half as hard because you aren't as good at tele as fixed heels.

for large skis, in length and width try to find some hammer heads, they can drive big skis no problem. normal tele bindings feel sloppy and stretchy on heavy skis. that being said, the O1s will do pretty well compared to voile.

22 designs has the axl which is the hammerhead with free pivot, too
you could also go the route of NTN, which a lot of people like. There is going to be a more touring oriented NTN, the freedom, next year

Thanks for the help. Still some questions/statements.


I'm going to also use FKS on these skis, using quiver killers. Switching out whenever i feel.

So tele, would really be only for touring. Since i have yet to start touring, i doubt i'm going to be doing any really crazy stuff. So i'm sure after a month or so i'll get used to tele skiing.


What are some good tele boots as well? I'm not looking for the top of the line, but good. Not bad. Easy to tour.

go see what fits your foot best, but if your looking for a lighter more agile boot look at the Black Diamond Seeker or Push or the Scarpa t-2

i would suggest the t-1 over the t-2. The t-1 is pretty stiff and can drive big skis really well but it still has a walk mechanism and paired with a free pivot binding would really give you a tele set up that would be great on the uphill while still allowing you to charge on the downhill. The t-2 is a fine boot it just has a little lower back so it will have less support and it also will be a little softer.

I spent a chunk of last season teleing in the BC while I was waiting for my on3ps to ship. I'm a pretty solid tele skier inbounds and I was incredibly frustrated. But if you want to commit to it that would be legit as well

Well going up is way more comfortable in tele gear.....few people will argue with that....

But going down require a different skill set altogether.... And I would venture out into ungroomed terrritory with new equipment that you do know how to use yet.... rent some gear and try it out.

I have been tele skiing for over 12 years and I love the freedoom and natural feeling of a freeheeled turn. It is killer exercise and can help develop awesome balance... I like to mix it up once in a while too....haviing some tele board really adds to the quiver...

I vote for tele, of course with a bunch of practice first...

PS. I have tried to hit the park with my tele gear and it is awesome once you get it.....but people stare...in amazement or bewilderment I am not certain.

If you are doing any skinning a free pivot touring mode is a must (BD01, Axl, targa ascent, switchback…). Boots are pretty dependent on how you ski, the fit and your skis. I preferred a softer boot for learning, but also was driving a light midfat for my 1st tele setup.

Glad I committed to learning to tele a few years back; even though there were many times I swore it was the stupidest way to ski ever. Picking up the technique on groomers doesn’t take long but the transition from groomers to soft snow can be really frustrating without good technique.

if your going to buy tele gear, you HAVE to buy NTN, so much better, so much more solid, you could ski a whole day in them without realizing that you were on tele... for boots, scarpa tends to be narrower and garmont is wider...

Those who have used ntn, what is the comparison to standard Tele? Besides the brakes, and release, what are other benefits to the system?
