BACK PAIN after lapping the park

Hey,

I was skiing today for about 3,5 hours. I hit a 22 feet and 35 feet jump followed by a donkey rail in 4min laps. After about 4 rounds i felt little pain in my lower back close to my vertebral column (I guess it was the fascia thocaculumbalis and maybe upper parts of the gluteus maximus). I already knew this pain from jumping trampoline for more than 1 hour and ignored it today as long as possible cause the weather and the park were awesome, but the pain grew during the day. I went home after I could hardly walk anymore, threw in some pain killers and am now asking myself how this happened. One snowboarder told me he had similar problems after jumping tramp and a friend explained to him that he always landed leaned forward.

Has anyone experienced similar and solved the problem? Should I try to land as upright as possible?

(btw, the pain is only on the right side of the vertebral column)
(I didn't really crash hard the whole day --> problem must be linked to the impact)

Sounds like you need to work on your core strength! when I started jumping on tramps a lot I developed that pain and the stronger my core got, the better my back felt.

I had the same problem. Constant jumping without absorbtion can lead to this. Excersizing your calf muscles, quads and core will help. if symptoms persist, see your doctor

first and foremost, I am not a doctor or a physical therapist.

However, based on what you said it sounds like your lower back is being overworked, ie, it's working extra hard to support your frame. I don't know if this is caused by slouching or something else, but doing some exercises that strengthen your lower back could be a good idea if you are someone who doesn't get a lot of exercise (and lapping the park doesn't count).

Get familiar with an exercise known as the Plank (or Bridge). It's a great lower back exercise. Try to get into a structured exercise program two or three times a week that includes a WARM UP (very important), several exercises, and a COOL DOWN (again important). Because I have no certification/accreditation I'm not going to get into specifics, but I recommend you look into planks as a way to build lower back strength.

glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem...

Like you said I maybe should work on my strength, although I already am working out!
I guess not enough in the recent time, espescially not on my lower back. I didn't have acces to a gym for more than a month, so I only did chinups for the back these past weeks which are more for the biceps and latissimus... Whoever mentioned warming up also had a point! I didn't warm up at all...  Additionaly my quads had no power to absorbe since they were sore from 2 days fresh powder.

Seems to me now that more muscle strength and warming up should be the package I need for a painfree future!

If anyone has further explanations or ideas, feel free to answer :D

yep you've got it.
You don't even need to go to a gym. do lots of planks and sit ups and pull ups and wall squats. lean muscle mass is the way to go for skiing.

ive had a many of run-ins with back injuries. if it's a chronic thing then i dont know whats up, but ive had a few disc injuries that sound like what you're having.

it hurt my lower back on 1 side only, i couldnt take impact, run, or raise my leg quickly on that side. i had to take a month off from everything, then re-injured it on the OTHER side a few months later during running season. so if that sounds familier you should definately get to physio pronto.
