How Will Tanner Fair....

I just read the article Tanner had with tator about his comeback from micro-fracture surgery and his current training outlook for the year and I'm just wondering how everything thinks he is going to fair with all of the new up and comers riding Pipe like its never been riden before.

He stated that he'll be underground training Pipe for the next year and compete in the New Zealand Open a year from now and "drop a bomb on the world." Yes, I know Tanner is probably the most epic Pipe skier of all time, but times have changed since he's been in the ring.  Kevin Rowland, Bertoni, Torin-Wallace...I mean to name a few of these young bucks who aren't the slightest bit intimidated by Tanner. Yeah the guy's gonna work his but off, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesnt't even qualify for the 2014 Olympic team. Personally, there are just too many guys in this sport now that are working just as hard as him and only focusing on Pipe (just like him) that have age on their side.

I don't see Tanner making waves in the future like he thinks, and if he does he's going to have to go with through Kevin Rolland to hold that crown again....which is a pretty steep feat considering how solid Kev is riding these days. Anyone else have any thoughts on Tanner's comeback to Pipe and how he might hold up with the new generation of Pipe skiers?

I have to say, I can't believe that Torin guy is actually podiuming at the moment. He's basically throwing runs that David Crichton had dialed in 04-05. Not very stylish, either. It's that age hype that has some deep impact with the whole shabang, has to be.

Tanner is the only skier who WHEN he gets into the olympics will make the olmpics a better event for him being there. In my opinion all the other athletes are expendable but Tanner just HAS to be there, to win or to come last it makes no difference.

There is just something about the guy. He was more stoked for bertoni to win the x games than he would have been for himself. This is the kind of ambassador our sport needs.

He will be there.

i also don't understand this. torin's runs, while orders of magnitude better than anything i could ever do when my local ski area had a pipe, don't stack up to the competition, in my opinion. the style isn't there at all. heck, he barely grabs his double blender tricks at all. legs tucked holding your shins doesn't count. they even said during slope that and sign of discomfort with a trick is going to be big time deductions, but i guess they didn't follow their own rules for pipe, since not grabbing certainly doesn't look to me like you're comfortable with the trick.

Even if you have something serious like asthma, you aren't allowed to use some asthma medication as they increase blood flow in the lungs and ease breathing.

Tanner has created the sport that the said up and comers "own"...
Tanner has more style than all of the athletes the op listed and can easily dominate the sport he helped raise to what it is. If the op thinks age is a downfall look at any other sport, the best athletes perform the highest at 30. Age has only brought more style to Tanners game, if he wants he can invent all new tricks that bertoni rolland and torin will all have to go train for the 2018 olympics...
Why do people always forget that Tanner is the best freeskier of all time?, "he started this gangster shit, and this is the motherfuckin thanks he gets?"

1) you are just wrong. the last year he won X he was interviewed and said that the past two years he had trained in the southern hemisphere all summer for pipe and then just shredded retallack until a week before x. you ever wonder what he was doing instead of competeting on the dew tour? shredding pow in retallack.

2) you must be high if you think what sammy does is "training". dude goes to a gym and has a personal trainer put him through the same workout a fit soccer mom could complete. there is no one, to my knowledge, that actually has an offseason training regimen that is even remotly on par with what a world class athlete in any major sport goes through.

I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out, but do you guys not realize that men are in peak physical condition at Tanner's age. On top of that a major reason why there are not many older competitors in slope and pipe events is because the fact that as a lot of people age they will stop trying and attempting things they would at a younger age, but because Tanner is so driven I personally believe that he will still be pushing the envelope no matter what! Also look at other professional sports, take hockey for example as it is a high contact and high impact sport, players can play well into there forties. I know this would be a stretch for a freeskier but still it just shows that age isn't that large of a factor.

the dude i qouted was referencing a video that i have seen as well. on top of this, i have seen sammy in person, and can tell you that the dude does not look like a world class athlete. unless he is a genetic anomaly like BJ Penn, the guy is not in world class shape.


on a related note: why are you so angry all the time? do you have nothing better to do in your life than try and pick fights with people over the internet? all you seem to do is inject yourself into discussions, saying that no one knows anything about anybody and that we should all shut up.

i actually disagree with this. Athletes are in their prime in their late 20's because they have mastered the mental side of the game, and their physical skill havent declined significantly yet. they are at their physical peak in their early 20's. look at basketball players. they are at their most explosive in their early 20's and then they start to get a more well rounded game, because they cant just rely on their physical gifts any more.

See I disagree with you in the fact that you need to fact that a better, smarter player, won't go balls to the wall constantly but save there energy for when it is needed. Also I didn't say athletes were in there prime I men are and I actually did do some looking around on that one. Some people say earlier twenties but the general conclusion that I found was the mid twenties to early thirties. Just my 2 cents

ah ok so you've seen him in person so that told you everything about he training regime? you have any idea how stupid that sounds? genetic anomaly like bj penn? there's plenty of athletes out there, and comparing MMA to skiing is straight retarded by the way, who are in world class shape but you could never tell just by looking at them. face it, you're talking out of your ass. you have no clue about how he trains and by saying you do because of a short clip of him working out and by seeing him in person makes you looked like a jackass. there's enough stupid kids out there that blindly speculate, we really don't need any more.

If you take those two examples and see how awesome those guys were at 30 vs. some of the rookies... were they not gods of the sport?

Yeah well if you look at the way that most pro ski careers go these days, Torin will be up for a major injury right around Olympics time.

That is the thing... the youth push the barriers, just like the youth should... but we're so close to the physical limits of the human body that people are starting to get spanked for going too far.

Hockey players and football players go through WAY harder physical trauma than us skiers. Age is perception. Too much hype put on the youngins.

Finally some examples of people excelling in their 30s heres some more: Scott nidermeyetr, Nicolas lidstrom, Kobe as already stated, Michael Jordan excelled in his 30s, Shaq excelled almost till his 40s, tony Parker,Tim Duncan, Teemu selanne. PLEASE add some mor to show these haters that people can still compete in their 30s if not their prime in their 30s

so, just in case anyone is wondering, Tanner can indeed go upside down more than once in one trick:

a personal favorite run of mine, I really like his grab choices & the fact that he starts it switch (although I'd rather see a sw 7 than a 10....)

Seriously?  No one else is putting three doubles in their runs, and most still struggle with the dub 12.  Only a handful can successfully throw a grabbed dub 12 in their runs.  If anyone could do the runs that Kevin did the past couple of X Games, they'd get silver right behind him haha.

I really hope he does well, I think he has freakish natural talent, and an insane drive to win, so really anything is possible. Yes pipe skiing has progressed, but that doesn't mean he can't catch up, especially if he is off the booze and has cut down on weed.
