USA and Canada holiday entitlement ?????

How many days holiday on average do you guys get when in full time employment ?

personally i get 3 weeks a year. this goes up by one week every 2-3 years (at my organization).

In the USA it's generally shit for staff employees... like 15 days tops (for long term service) - mostly it's like 10 days if you're lucky!

The UK it's typically 20-25 days paid vacation.

Not sure about Canada...

Or you just work as a contractor for yourself, make $$$ and take as much time off as you want / need.... profit!

USA here, working for the State in a critical access position (meaning I could potentially work any day, holiday or not, weekends, any shift). Instead of getting any particular day off I get time to use as I please. I accrue at a rate dictated by my years of experience. As I am within my first year of my job, its not very good compared to the ones who have been there like 30 years. Its still pretty good overall though, it works out to around 20 paid days off a year.

This is the reason i asked....someone told me that USA 10 day thing and i could not beleive that shit.

I work for the NHS in UK and currently get 34 days not including bank holidays. On the down side its shit here and theres fuck all to do.

I know it is a legal requirement that companies give 10 days vacation in Canada, except Saskatchewan which legally requires 15.
I get 20 days per year however.

I work in higher ed in the USA

every year I get:
- every national holiday
- 3 weeks vacation
- 12 sick days
- "mandatory" week paid vacation during our winter recess
- 3 personal days

not too shabby

Yeah I guess I should include my sick time, which I didn't do. That also accrues based on how many hours I work, but its less than vacation time. I want to say I get 12-15 sick days a year (ironic since I can only have two occurrences before its a verbal warning). There are other fringe benefits I get too such as bereavement time, maternity/paternity and other leaves, but I am not counting that stuff.

at most corporations it depends on your position

I work part time so no paid vacation for me

but my pops- they start at 2.5 weeks and then get an extra week for every 5 years

the hourly truck drivers however start with 1 week- and its based on time worked so basically they get shitty chances for good weeks- however you put in your time and you can have 6 weeks paid vacation as a truck driver


in the USA there is however no mandate for required time off-

technically speaking- my dads a vp now so he gets automatic 4.5 weeks- however he barely ever uses 3 weeks because if he does he gets stupid behind in work

Not speaking for your dad, but that's an issue in modern work culture if people can't even go about their lives vacationing in peace.

the US is one of the only countries in the world that doesn't have a single federally mandated holiday. one of the downsides of a free market.

yeah but I think its just him- he takes a ton of half days or works from home- in his position its fine- when he starts taking multiple weeks off in a close area he gets behind


plus hes the kind of guy that cant sit still too long- hes going to retire at 55 and then wants to open a business with my Brother and I. His dad is 81 and still goes to work all summer at the golf course because he gets bored

Hey man - Im british, and i moved to the USA - Greatest decision ever!

Trust me - the holiday thing isn't so bad - especially when you get paid more, pay less taxes and generally have an easier - better quality of life than you do in the UK.

I would tell anyone to move mountains to do whatever it takes to get from the UK to America - especially now knowing what i know and having lived here for 3.5 years....

If you worked in a medical profession in America - you'll coin it in - it's all privately owned and huge money - salaries are huge. Take a nurse for example - they get dicked on in the UK and do so much hard work for fuck all pay - in the USA, they make huge money.... just do it. you won't regret it! The UK is a Mess - my protest was to be an example of the brain drain from there and take my skills and tax paying ability elsewhere...
