Broken Thumb

I broke my thumb skiing yesterday. Doctor says that I can be back skiing in 6 weeks. Any thoughts on skiing in a cast?

Brutal, I feel like that's a long time to not ski for just a broken thumb...although i'm not a doctor. He must just not want you to land on it again and make it worse!

dude ive broken my thumb 3 times, 1 required surgery and I shredded away every time. If youve got a fiberglass cast, those fuckers are super hardcore and your thumb is perfectly safe( you cant wear poles obviously). But yeah go for it you cant let an stupid finger injury prevent you from skiin

I fractured my thumb last week and the doctor said I could ski the next day, so I did!

You are fine, they just say that so they don't get in trouble if you actually do get hurt skiing next day.

i moved to whistler and broke my thumb like the third day of the season i went no poles for 2 weeks then it felt like normal again ppl will talk about complications later in life i broke mine then rebroke the first fay back with poles but it did nothing to sop my season just ignore it ski with a splint then after the season i got it checked and it healed perfect

unless u reeeaallly broke it bad and got a big time cast but then stil ski ne ways even tho it will suck

if its just a splint wear it at all times for the first 2 weeks then only wear it while not skiing it will still be broken but u ont even notice

I broke mine a couple years ago playing baseball. Line drive right into my thumb and it jammed my thumb back so hard that the bone split in 2 places. A tiny injury considering it was just a thumb.
I played in the game for another half hour because it didn't even hurt at first. I remember I felt bad for missing the line drive I made some sweet plays after. Then all of a sudden the pain just randomly hit and I just started crying a little in the dugout. Weirdest feeling ever. It was a pretty bad pain for such a small injury is what I'm trying to say.
The doctor just put a little cast on it and I was dirtbiking and playing baseball a couple weeks later.

I've broken mine twice and skiied the next day both times. Its a common injury for our kind. Man up papuh bitch.

so i ended up skiing about 5 times or so with the cast. There was one time when I fell when my thumb began to hurt. Didn't think it was to big of a deal, and the pain was gone within a day or too. Few weeks later...Today I got my cast off, and as soon as I looked at my thumb I knew something wasn't right. Turns out I must have re-broke it when I fell, causing it to heal in a odd position. Looking at my thumb the bone sticks out creating a big bump, and giving me limited movement. Because of this I will have to get surgery and my ski season is over :(
Morrow of the story is to listen to your doctor. I felt that because I had a hard fiberglass cast, that I would be protected and there was no way I could mess up my thumb anymore. Now I have to have surgery and miss the rest of the season.
This isn't made for you to feel sorry for me, but instead, be smart about your injuries.

Moral of the story is rarely, rarely listen to people on NS. Maybe a few of the gearheads, but generally ignore 95% of the people on here when fishing for advice.

Filmed this after breaking my third metacarpal(sp?)
casts suck because i couldnt hold poles,
hand was really gnarly after also because of the moisture

sorry for dub post,
but if you're planning on skiing more than 10 days with it, make sure to try and seal it maybe with a bag before you go.
anything to keep moisture out wear a sock over your club or whatever works
i took it off a week early after around 15 days of skiing with it because i couldnt deal with the smell haha girls hate the smell...
