if they light it up well, then maybe people won't fall on every run like they did last year (in the finals anyway) cause the sun was already down and the landings on the jumps were infisible

eh, thats true, but it wont be an outrageous amount. i mean there are plenty of fully lit mountains where i live, its kind just like lighting one long run really really well.

I like that idea tbh.I think stuff at night looks so much better.But they will need to have it lit properly other wise th athletes will fuck themselfs over

lol you guys are all freaking out, I always ski at night its much better for some things like seeing the landing, its never flat light.

football games probably use less lights anyways. but i bet they are doing this as an issue with the snow conditions last year because i remember bobby or someone talking about how the lighting was flat and they couldn't get speeds right and such

If it is true, I bet it has to do with the uber flat light conditions that are inevitable on sunny winter days. Also, it puts the event in PRIME TIME, which means more viewers which means more $$$$.

Isn't that an indictment on the conditions of day-time competition and an endorsement to have it at night? I seldom hear even as much as a whisper about flat light conditions for superpipe.

I've never skied in a 'well lit' park but I think it might be hard to spot where you are doing doubles.

ive skied park at night and hitting jumps is just weird maybe just my mountain and their lighting and yeah its really fucking cold but i dont know it could be cool

i hope its lit well so they can straight fist the set up and make it their bitch, canada is taking home 1 &2 in mens snowboard slope again this year. and jamieson irvine is gonna take home first for ski slope

X eliminated a bunch of snowmobile events that used to take place at night, so I guess they're lighting up the slope course for more primetime entertainment. I just hope Thursday night will be broadcast live.

I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing. At night it is easier to spot the snow as its just dark above.. You cant get confused by clouds.

You actually can light up a course WAY better at night than dealing with flat light.

The key thing you're looking for is resolve. People need depth perception and the ability to see the nuances in all the stuff around them. Artificial light allows you to control this, and the X-games has a lighting budget bigger than Pink Floyd.

Daytime you can get hit with flat light, which is totally unbeatable. Putting dye on the landings helps a bit, but still nothing matches bathing things in pure bright sunlight.

As to the stiffness of landings, they have a super pro park crew there. Getting a solid grooming buff in before the finals would make all the landings perfectly soft and beautiful. You want firm landings, just not icy. Ever seen how the tiller on a snowcat works? It is like a gigantic rotating barrel with 6" spikes on it that drive into the snow breaking up the surface, and churning it up to be smooshed into beautiful corduroy.

TBH having finals at night is probably the best decision they could have made.

Vail used to have a big ass snowboard slopestyle at night and it was brighter than day... It's not really that hard to light up one run.

I'll keep repeating it until people read my post.

Its not about brightness its about resolve.

Night lights do a much better job of detail in the snow regardless of conditions than the sun can. The sun can be hidden by clouds.

We've don't a lot of light adjustments in out parks the last few years.  It can definitely be done if you have the resources to do it and the X Games sure as hell do.  This was last year during our big air comp.   I'd prefer more downward light on the landing but our poles aren't that tall...Click for larger image

Whats the problem here? If they can drive and F1 competition at night, it shouldnt be a big deal to light up a small slopecourse + i only get to ski in daylight for like the last month or 2 of the season cause i work the weekends and our hill opens at 4pm and its already longdark by then..

thats actually pretty damn smart of them. It always looks absolutely miserable flat light every year. 4pm is literally the worst time of day to ski, and slope finals always are at this time every year. super bright takeoffs to super dark landings. Terrible contrast.

to be fair the course is pretty much always rock hard (not icy though) no matter night or day except last years euro x. the night course will be. and ligting shouldnt be a problem. they already do it for pipe and big air too anyways
