So I got a concussion...

It was the second time I was skiing since our ski area opened second run also. Basically I remember coming up to the jump and then the next thing I remembered was that I was inside of our resort restaurant with a few friends. I have no idea how I got in there, I guess my body was functioning but i was unconsious. Everyone said that I went for a backflip and basically did a double to my back and neck. Now my head hurts and I have a few big ass bruises and stuff, but thats about it. Now I plan on not throwing down so hard and just focus on filming. Moral of the story don't go huge in the begging of the season. Just thought you guys might enjoy a short story for the day.

Classic concussion. You probably asked what happened a million times while you were out.

but I agree with your premise: keep it real early in the season. Not worth fucking yourself up early and miss out on, potentially, months of skiing.

Well I went to ski patrol, basically my friend did the same thing but screwed his back up more. So the patrol guy was way more focused on him, but then he let us both go. So I drove home and basically my hedache got progressively worse over the next few hours. I feel better now, probably because i took a few Ibuprohen a few hours ago.

Exactly ha, I really want to figure out what i was saying to people and stuff. I am just amazed that my unconcious body got up and grabbed my skis and poles and stuff. Then again im not sure if my skis and poles fell off.

go to the hospital. it could be worse than you think. you never know

also your doctor will clear you to go back on the hill. you shouldn't even click into skis if you are concussed. your recovery could be 2 weeks or 2 months. do yourself a favor and get checked out homie.

I once collided with someone. Next thing I knew I was on the chairlift on my way up for another run. I kept skiing that day, just took it easy. then went home and slept. Still have yet to tell anyone in my family about it, and it was last season haha.

Yeah maybe i'll skip out on school tomorrow and go get checked out. Do you think that I would be able to ski next weekend if all I was doing was filming?

i've legit had 5 or 6 of severe and probably another 6 mild conscussions all from hockey. i cant remember what i did last week. but i tend to remember really random pointless shit.

I haven't had quite as many as you, but I'm in the same boat. It sucks.

Anyways, you should stay off skis for a little while. Doctors are constantly reminding me of 'second impact syndrome', and even though it's extremely rare/controversial, it's scary as fuck and not worth that extra day.

1. visit a doctor
2. don't listen to/ask for, or most importantly follow any medical advice from anyone on NS you receive in a forum post
3. head injuries are serious
4. go to the doctor
5. Good luck, I'm sure it'll work out, but best to get it checked out when it involves your brain!

First time I got concussed, I guess I did a few more runs afterword before going home.

Second time I got concussed, I hit my head hard catching an edge of a jump, then went up and hit my head again two runs later.

I don't remember a whole lot from these instances, but my head was definitly feeling shitty, and I'm pretty retarded for wanting to keep riding and risk making the situation worse.

I pmd the OP.... I don't think the majority of 13-17 year old kids on this site that post, should be listened to medical advice that comes from the same 13-17 YO demographic. I also sent the OP a PM stating what he should do. Which is go to the Doctor. I'm 32 years old, been around head injuries for a long time and had several severe head injuries myself requiring hospitalization.... I've spent a lot of time talking with athletes who have had significant TMI's due to this. I've also lost a best friend (CR Johnson) due to one... I wanted to post something else in the thread (not PM) that everyone could read, and that would be, "dont ask young kids on an internet forum about head injuries".. It's unlike a sprained ankle, or twisted knee. Head injuries are serious. Go to the Doctor. Cheers tho , sorry for the confusion.

My question is though, what can a doctor do? How do they check for a concussion and its seriousness. I am just wondering because when i went for ski patrol they didnt do a full check but he cleared me and said I could keep skiing. But today my head and neck are definitly sore.

First time I ever got concussed I did a 7, went corked but not uncorked, smacked my head on the knuckle, woke up and skied down and then I was sitting in ski patrol and realized I had no idea how I got there, where ski patrol was, or where the people I was skiing with were.... Concussions are strange things.

I've had a few of those. What you need to do is take it extremely easy for a few days. And then you're going to get more headaches than before. Kinda sucks actually.

I've had a few serious concussions and unless your brain is bleeding for hitting your head so hard (in which case you would probably still knocked out), there is really next to nothing a doctor can do for you. "Yep you've got a concussion, take it easy till the headaches stop."

And OP at least you just came to inside a restaurant with your friends, and not in an ambulance.

Exactly, yeah I am still going to go in because today i noticed a vertebrae right next to my head is off centered and slid over to the right quite a bit. So I am just going to go get everything checked out and make sure its all good. Thanks for the help though everyone.

Still havent gone to the doctor, might be going tomorrow, but as it stands I am actually feeling really good. My neck is a little sick and my head aches a little when I get up but other than that I seem to be fine. It is interesting because my other friend who did the same thing was in more pain and he went to the doctor and found out that he has severe muscle spams, a bruised right kidney and maybe a few back things. All of my friends said I went way bigger and fell way harder, but as it stands all I have is a bid red bruise on my hip a sore neck and very minor chest pain.

So it has been one weak sense I got my concussion and I just had a hookah sesh, would there be any bad side affects because of my concussion? Or what it just be the same as the affects from normally smoking hookah?

probly the worst thing you could do after sustaining a concussion. take tylenol NOT anything that is an anti inflamatory. it will exacerbate the bleeding on your brain if you have any.

My worst one... I got taken to the grocery store with my roommates. Forgot I was there with them. Went to the parking lot searching for my car and spent a solid half hour looking. Got all panicked until they finally found me wandering around.

Woke up the next day went to the doctor and got put in a neck brace and put on pain killers for 2 weeks and not allowed to work 1 week or ski for 3. That was a bad time in my life.

My memory has suffered and I've had another 2 since.

Don't mess with your brain. Get it checked.

how have you guys had so many concussions and are all fine. i heard that if you have had 3 concussions it is strongly recommended that you do not ski anymore because you may suffer severely.

Same here. From what I understand, the general consensus is that three and you're out. After the third concussion there can be very severe consequences.

generally speaking, if your pupils are not dilated and you're not vomiting you should be good to go.

No... hookah will not do anything and if its been a week since and you're not dead, which you're obviously not, you'll be fine.

this.... concussions can literally kill you. even if you think your fine your not and you can hit your head again and in minutes you might not be breathing.... long shot. yea i guess but you want to take very pre caution with head injuries you can.

ya i did that when i was younger i was biking then the next thing i knew i was in my friends basement and my friends wer legit mad at me for asking where i was too many times

on the way home after my crash they stopped to jump on a neighbors trampoline and aparently i just stood there gazing at nothing and the dummys ddint think anyhting was wrong

i went tot he doctor took a few days of junior football and i was fine... i hope there could be a hemorige just waiting to put me ina coma but ive hit my head since i think it jsut made me tougher

I have gotten a concussion an I always wonder what really happened while I was out of it.. I know I managed to make it home from the skatepark which is 45 min away ad get into my bedroom but I have no idea how I got there and what happened
