Trick Progression

I'm a serious backcountry skiier that is trying to do park alot more now. I have 3's down 100% of the time, and am working on grabs. Im wondering when I should learn grabs, before or after working on the extra rotation? At what point should I learn backflip/frontflips? Before or after cork/bios? Wheres the fastest and easiest route to gto from here, in your own experience? Thanks for the time, +k for not being a dick and callin me a n00b haha.

your a noob. haha nah just kidding but I'd stomp some some 5's before going too crazy with grabs if you want to progress quickly

1) Never say you have a trick down 100% of the time, you will become lackadaisical.
2) Try to add some grabs to your 3's, simple mute grab to start you off. It is a very different feeling spinning with a grab
3) Backflips are about nutting up, personally i believe they are easier than 3's. You can control your rotation and spot your landing easily.
4) Front flips should probably come after backflips
5) Corks/and Bios feel very different and you should have 5's before you start attempting them. Often I over set a cork 3 and have to swing my feet round and land switch (basically cuz i suck at them) but if i couldn't do 5's then i would be fucked.


This is just my personal opinion should in no way be taken as a guide for a way to progress. Progressing and the method used is subjective and there are an eclectic variety of factors to consider. I just thought I would try to help. Good luck

well, i can only do 5's, with no grabs yet.
After i stomed my 5's pretty neat, i felt like a rodeo would feel sweet ,(weird, huh?) so i tried it, and its a trick that i feel i cant get hurt on, as long as you dont go to big tho. As long as you come around and land on your feet, and then fall it shouldnt be any pain at all. After that, i just brought on a japan grab wich is fairly easy. I allso learned misty 5 by just doing a rodeo, but throwing my self frontwards. Sounds weird, but works, So my goal this season would be to bring grabs into bigger spins, 7s and 9s.

well, no its not. That would turn out as a flair, underflip or a d-spin.

A lincoln with a 180 would be more correct, but not quite. You drop one of your shoulders down more in a sideflip, wich would make you spin slowly - yet noticeable around. and you will land switch.

This. When I set my rodeos I honestly just throw it like a lincoln and turn my head to get the last 180.

Same here, but when i pop i kinda throw myself one-foot, i lift my left foot, pop and does what you just said

Learn up to 5's and get a few solid grabs down before moving up to bigger spins, it'll help with style and make you a better skier. That's probably the biggest part, don't get so focused on progressing that you forget style and cleanliness.

In my experience, I learned (in order):

3, 5, backflips 7, frontflips, 9, lincoln loops, flat 3, rodeo 5, cork 7, cork 5, various hand drag corks, rodeo 7, Misty 5.

^That seemed to be a pretty good order for me as I was learning, but everyone's different.

For me, doing a backflip was a big step that lead to me wanting to try new tricks and was a huge confidence booster. After that, the next biggest step was learning flat 3's and rodeos--they teach you how to be comfortable off axis and develop air-awareness. Since then, it's been smooth sailing--you just have to get through learning technique, style, confidence and how to fall (which was the most important in my case, cause I've destroyed myself learning new things).

You'll soon learn that a lot of it is about having confidence and committing 100% to a trick, after you start to get that you'll surprise yourself with what you'll learn.

Also, if you want something super fun and pretty low consequence I would suggest flat 3's, a flat 3 with a poked out japan grab is my absolute favorite thing to do in the air.

I learnt front flips before backflips, it is all about manning up and doing it. Ive never done a backflip in my whole entire life and im 16! Im a pussy when it comes to backflips. Cant even do them on a tramp but yet I can misty and lincoln loop

I'm wondering how good you are if you get them 100%..

Anyways, i learnt all way up to 7 without grabs, over 7 its just huck and hope from our small jumps.

then i learn 3s with grabs, trying to get grabs to 5 but only i can do is tail n mute..

Learnt cork 7 and flatspin and so on
