Skrillex is fake?

I saw 12th Planet, Skream and Benga, Nero, and Skrillex the other night for the spooky tings in denver. Already seeing Skrillex, I knew he wasn't very good at mixing and Nero and Skream and Benga killed it so for the Skrillex show I went to the back of the venue to just chill and watch the cell. While back there, I noticed 4 Scandinavian guys IN TINFOIL HATS (keep in mind it was Halloween night, but tinfoil hats, really?) playing Skrillex's entire set. While Sonny Moore had his hands clapping in the air, these guys were mixing 4 songs together. I watched them play the entire set mixing every song together and they had the track lists in front of them whole deal. These guys were truly DJing, while sonny moore was doing some whomp dancing. So now my question is, are these 4 random guys the REAL skrillex and sonny moore is just their front man, or did skrillex blow up too quickly and he couldnt handle the pressure, so he created the cell to have other DJ's do his work?

REGARDLESS

Skrillex WAS NOT playing his set when I saw him, instead four Scandinavians in tinfoil hats were mixing all of his songs together while he danced on stage.

skrillex sucks. he rarely does live mixes and he ones he does suck. he has an entire album dedicated to remixing his own songs. his old screamo band sucked, his new electro act thing sucks.

Either you're saying we dislike Skrillex for no reason other than to be mean, or you're calling us hipsters?

I hate dubstep (and most of hip hop) because it appeals to philistines. There's literally zero sense of subtlety in any of it, and it's all based around the concept of copy/pasting bars from the previous measure and tweaking them slightly (as opposed to playing the whole section manually), which makes it painfully obvious that you're hearing the exact same recording being repeated. It pretty much takes out all of the wild characteristics that give real music that extra something and replaces it with LOUD NOISES so that the musically illiterate can actually feel like they understand how to dissect sound the way an actual musician does.

Listen to a Pink Floyd album and what do you hear? Stereoscopic condenser mics in a carpeted studio; the rattling of the wooden speaker cabinets; rotating quadraphonic sound projection; room acoustics; even the tremolo claw smacking against the wooden grain as Gilmour taps the vibrato. What do you hear with Skrillex? A bunch of sloppy filters applied to dry-recorded tritone scales. You would have to be literally musically retarded to think there's an ounce of musical depth in any of this.

you know not what you talk about. seems to me you aren't musically inclined in the slightest.

dubstep, when done right, is just as enjoyable to many many incredibly musically gifted people.

I find it's one's ability to find true music in any genre that really separates a musician above someone who just plays music.

It's musical close-mindedness that sinks your ship; any great musician, such as Zappa, will be able to listen to a piece of music (even if they detest that genre) and be able to tell why it appeals to others and recognize the skill needed to compose/perform it.

I realize the button pressing and sampling (like Girl Talk for example) aren't good examples of instrumental or compositional skill, but they still have a different kind of musical talent that not many can do and make sound really good. It seems like people who make decent dubstep are a dime a dozen, but I'm under the impression that's because you can make it on your laptop with a free piece of software and upload a good quality version to the internet without a recording studio etc etc.

I like to compare it to a painter doing a mozaic. The artist will use all little pieces of broken tile or ceramic that came from previous works of art and create something new and beautiful with it.

Open your mind to music; it doesn't mean you need to like it.

I'm guessing what you thought were the actual DJs were really just the guys controlling the lights. They had the setlist in front of them so they'd know which cues to send, and when. Spooky Tings was my 4th time seeing Skrillex, and as an amateur DJ myself, I can honestly say that what you heard was indeed Skrillex. As far as his apparent lack of turntablism, the style of mixing (or lack thereof) that he employs doesn't necessarily require turntables. He probably pre-recorded the set and then added the effects, etc. live on stage.

p.s. Nadastrom fuckin killed his set, even though it was only like 20 mins.

the thing is, with your inclusion of hip-hop (i might just be fucking up on my distinction between hip hop and rap) you sound extremely ignorant, because IMO hip hop is more about word play and lyrics than the actual beat of the song

That's exactly what I did. I was open to dubstep at first, gave it a careful examination, and arrived at my conclusion that it is indeed shit. I'm not saying people aren't allowed to like it. I'm just sick of dubstep fans saying my reasons for disliking a genre are unjustified.

hope your not talking about the halloween show at the 1st bank center. everyone iv talked to that went agrees it was the worst. set. ever. they basically screamed into the mics the whole set, with MAYBE 2 minutes of good music. although they did say they had equipment problems.

That's probably why I think a lot of it sucks since I don't give a fuck about poetry. I've always been under the impression that rap was more lyric-oriented while hip-hop was more musical, which is why I hate rap altogether.

I will say that Death Row, Wu-Tang, and others with the funk/jazz flavor are fucking awesome. However, I can only respect them to a certain degree because their beats are 80% samples of funk/soul artists who were far more talented than they were (save RZA, who's just a goddamn boss).

How is that hard to imagine? I come from a classical background. Do you think history's famous composers were primarily concerned with lyrics? No, they were supplementary to the actual music.

Lyrical songs are "poems with a beat" if you are focusing primarily on the lyrics. To me lyrics are unnecessary and irrelevant to the music itself, which is why I prefer instrumental music.

I just happen to be able to articulate exactly what I don't like about certain types of music and why I dismiss them. Just because I personally find certain music to be horrible doesn't mean I'm saying it's an invalid form of expression, nor am I saying people don't have the right to enjoy the music. I'm just explaining my rationalé to demonstrate that I'm not just "hating" (which doesn't make any sense anyway).

For instance, I could identify any given note, chord, guitar make/model, wood, pickups, amplifier, tuning, etc. on my favorite album, but I couldn't possibly recite a single line of its lyrics. And I've listened to probably a thousand times by now.

lets take the skrillex show i just went to for example:

$42+fees for tickets.

$315,000 in ticket sales alone, plus merch sold at the show...

obviously he isn't bagging 315k himself, there are countless cost that go in to making that show run; but i saw that someone said he was making $3,000 a show...there is no way in hell he's making that little. probably more like $3k a song.

But really, just because people don't like him doesn't mean they're jealous. It just means...they don't like him? Everyone has their reasons (some more justifiable than others).

Me too, but based on my experience in L.A. it really isn't "rich."

And I agree; I have nothing against him personally. I just think his music is horrendous and I'm tired of his fans making reactive comments like "you're just a hater" or "you're just jealous."

skrillex doesn't make that much, but everything is covered for him where ever he goes. Spencer, the most money from ticket sales from a show go to the venue that had to pay to book the artist, that money goes to their management/record label, and a cut of it goes to the artist.

you want a DJ that makes a lot of money, look at armin. he charges $150k+ for a 2 hour set

i said at least 3k. Thats minimum. You have to understand that there are a few hands that get at what the venue pays before him. still 3Gs for 2 hours of flailing around and pressing buttons. Top it off with the fact that only a fraction, maybe none, of his touring and accom expenses come out of that 3 grand, thats just ''spending' money.

I enjoy skrillex's music, but I'm not musically inclined so I can't speak for the quality of his songs. Many of them are catchy the drops are explosive and his sets are super energetic. Hes one of the 'icons' or figureheads of dubstep which is blowing up everybody knows him and the songs sound good, perfect recipe for a mainstream star.

In terms of money I'd say hes gotta be doing pretty well. Like above the show brings in $300k+ if another artist is profiting 150k+ I'll argue a huge name like skrillex can at least pull 1% of the profits from his own show. I also know in terms of spending he gets a ton of shit comped for him (alcohol, food, etc). He's lined up to play over a set a day for the next year. Ill bet he lives in a pretty pimp RV, has little quality of life costs and all his money goes to what he wants to spend it on.
