Backflip

I know this isnt the first thread about backs on skis, i used the search bar couldnt really get an accurate answer.

So heres the thing im really comfortable doings backs on the trampoline and diving board, My mountain opened last week and some guys made this kicker thats had a pretty steep landing and the landing is pretty soft.. im not sure if it's a good idea.. so i'd like to get your thoughts on backflips and tips.. so i dont break my neck.

Its best to do your backflip into powder thats a couple feet deep first in case you don't get it all the way over. Pop on take off and tuck until you see your landing.

keep square to the jump, try to kick the invisible wall behind you and tuck until you see the landing.

its kinda pre season i mean the jump is maybe a 5-6 footer ...

dont listen to ruffles.... i learned on a small jump myself and i didnt need a ton of powder. smaller jumps are less intimidating . and if you happen to fall, there is far less risk of injury.

If you don't feel comfortable on the jump build your own that gives you more pop and a softer landing...

not alot of risk in catching your tips if you have a steep landing. again, i highly recommend you DO tuck the first time you try, because you are more likely to under rotate then over rotate.

1. Try your first on sans poles, it feels more comfortable/you don't stab yourself.
2. Get more speed than you think, don't be a pussy. <--- IMPORTANT (scorpions can fuck you up)
3. Turn your ski's towards the jump, this is the hardest part
4. Huck like on a tramp and grab for your knee's (on your first attempt, just to be safe)
5. You will feel your feet come around and see the landing.
6. Stomp and roll away like you just landed your first backflip.

If you can do them on a trampoline you're basically set, my only advice is to commit. commit commit commit commit. Then you'll start realizing how hard to throw off different size jumps etc..

If you commit you will be fine. You might even land it first try (like me /claim).

I landed my first one off a smaller jump so go with what you have. The first time I was so shocked I actually somewhat committed to it I didn't bring my feet around and landed on my chest (this is why a decent landing is helpful). Second time, I was able to get it around after realizing that I could actually do this if I just committed a little more. As I look back, this was probably one of the greatest feelings I ever had on skis / in life. Hope you have the same experience. just commit.

A powder landing would be prime, but I know I didn't have that luxury and you may not either.

Same here! I tried 3 times:
1st try = Didnt commit and landed on head
2nd try = committed but landed on chest/neck
3rd try = landed on chest / stomach

This is from laying it out 3 times... I stopped before I pushed my luck too far..
4th times the Harm?

ouch sounds like a rough day. my remedy for when i was in a situation much like your own was pretty simple. go bigger, huck harder.

and in regards to whether or not to tuck. id advise that you do whatever feels more comfortable. do you usually tuck them or lay them out on a trampoline?

i would suggest a park jump, just what i learn on, but either way they're not hard if you feel comfortable with the jump let er eat and it will happen

also make sure you keep square first one i tried i ended up spinning after i got like 3/4 of the way through got it second try though

don't flip to early. otherwise you will hit your head on the lip of the jump.

i can do both but i usually do layed out backs just because they look sicker and are funner to do but i dont reeally care if my first back on skis is sketchy i just wanna get the rotation down and then improve on my style. but when ill do it ill tuck ..

I went skiing today, didnt try a back., instead i did two fronts.. i landed both on my back cause i was too scared for the back.

They were easier to learn than 360's for me. Just get a little scared, commit, and flip. You probably want to tuck your first few times cause you need to extra flip to get around since you wont be used to the weight of your skis slowing you down yet. As soon as you're comfortable though, you can take the jump bigger and open up more so you can slow down.

i hucked my first backflip last year, i never really got it down but i figured out that you really cant get hurtn, when i did it i commited like 0% and almost landed it, i caught my tips on the nuckle and front flipped on the ground, but it went alright for first try
