Something I have never understood about thread titles

This may be a really fucking dumb question but it has baffled me for a long time. Why is that some thread titles show up blue and others black? Sometimes it switches half way down the listing of threads from black to blue, other times they are all black or all blue, I don't get it.

Threads turn blue if they haven't been replied to since your last log in.
