Depression

Depression is the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life. I don't know what to do or how to get out of it. The only time I don't feel like shit is when Im drunk or on drugs. Pretty shitty way to make myself feel better but its the only way I can get out of my mental state of depression for at least a little while. If anybody out there on NS has ever overcome depression then it would be great if you could help. I've recently started to tell people how I feel which feels good but I still feel shitty. Basically I just wanna know how I can get out of this cause Im to young to be feeling this way. I'll do what ever it takes cause all I want is to be happy.

I am in the same boat. the only time im truley happy is when im drunk or when im skiing. I have no real friends, this weekend i stayed at home by myself all weekend..i havnt done that since like 6th grade? My best advice to you would to be pick up some hobbies. Weight Lifting i beleive is the best hobby ever. Builds self confidince, keeps your mind off the bullshit around you, and makes you more appealing to the opposite sex. Also basketball is another one that i love.

But just remember idle time is the devils playground.

Also my biggest problem with it is that it completely kills all of my motivation. I just wish I had the motivation to go to all my classes, do all my work, get a job, etc...

there are points where i'm depressed, but it never lasts more than a day or at most 2. Just try to think of the positives in life. Maybe check to see if you have mono. Do stuff you like, find a hobby. THe best cure for me is to have sex.

Adderal or *pre workout supplements* they both give you energy, focus, and motivation for days. I dont want to be that guy that tells you to try drugs but if your loooking to get off your ass...this will do the trick.

excercise is probably one of the best things you can do. it releases endorphines, makes you feel better about yourself and helps you health wise. that and taking time to really appreciate whats around you. There is so much good out there. Its all about being aware of it. Drugs will probably not help you get back to a good sttate of mind. keep your head up.

Ive been where you are before bro, and it sucks. It really just takes the enjoyment out of everything. You feel like you will never get better, and nothing will ever make you happy again. For me, it just eventually got better. But I know for other people, they have had to see a psychiatrist and have medicine prescribed because it wasnt just his thought process that was bad, he was chemically unbalanced in his head. Seriously, if it is just too bad, go see somebody. They can really help.

Therapy would be something to consider. There's a pretty negative stigma around it, but it's definitely worth looking into as the science supports it. Also if you're in college/uni you could probably get it free.

Just take a walk and enjoy the colors. I was super depressed and nauseous for 5 months straight so i would go on a walk. It really lifts your spirits. Hope you feel better, it's tough to deal with.

do a lot, a lot, a lot of research before taking any drugs for psychological problems. Some are harmful, others are entirely ineffective. There is a lot of research that paints most of psychiatry as one big scam.

I feel like no one in this thread has actually been told they have depression by a doctor...they just think they're depressed.

I have an aunt who actually is clinically depressed and it's way more serious than any of the "symptoms" that you guys have. Not trying to be a dick about this...but it's just like people who claim they have insomnia. No, you don't...you just have an internet connection.

I am (or was) diagnosed with depression, shit sucks. I know what you all are going through, but the good thing is that it will get better. It takes some time and a little effort on your end (took me over a year to get somewhat better) but it will get better. Just keep your head high and don't let it get to ya. Having someone to talk to never hurts either, Be it a therapist (which didn't work for me and isn't the right choice for everyone), friend, family member, or some anonymous person online.

I can sort of relate. Its my first semester in college and Ive been kind of anti social on-and-off the past few weeks but I've been doing a lot of trail running and lifting. Definitely helps

Yo dude, everyone's been depressed, if you're lucky, unlike me, you have no reason to be depressed. Imagine if you had one of the most simple issue ever, that no one has, that every one can do with ease, stress free, you can walk, talk, lift your hand, point your finger hear smell taste shit piss fart cough  wtv. some people dont have these things granted to them. I have one of these that makes every goddamn day of my life a lot harder and more stressful, but dude, I'm still alive, and maybe I have difficulty simply taking a fucking piss in public, so what?, I can still do it in the end, imagine if I couldnt. imagine. give yourself a reason to be happy, we all have one inside, jusrt gotta find it. dont know if it helped you, helped me though. peace

cause this world is going down like  hell in a handbasket. and some of us are pissed off that we have front row seats to the downfall of our lifes.     thats why im depressed.  that i feel so indadaqute in a socicity that i wish not to be a part of but have no choce not to be.

and i just went veggie. and im pisssed as fuck caus i miss meat!

It comes down to looking at your like positively obviously hard to do if you are depressed but thats all you can do. You have to be positive in every aspect of your life. Do things everyday that you like and that you have fun doing. Try new things that hard but be positive when doing it. Sometimes things like working out can help, work out push yourself really hard when you work out so when you are done you feel like you just accomplished something really hard.

Its about positivity thats it. You need to implant positivity back into your brain. Your brain is amazing, there is so much unused power in there! You just have to let it out! Use that brain of yours to train itself to think positively. I know it sounds weird but really you can TRAIN your brain to think a certain way. It was once trained to be positive. Something happened that started to change it(didnt read the whole thread so Im not sure if you made a post further down about why you may be depressed) you need to get back to how you thought before.

I am big on will power and the power of a persons brain. I know a lot of drugs can be addictive and alcohol as well, its proved by science. But I am the kind of person that believes you can get over something like that on your own without the use of rehab. Just like with depression its about your brain overcoming itself and that takes constant positive reinforcement from you(YOUR BRAIN!).

If my stupid idea doesnt work ha, go see a therapist or something. They can help a lot of you find one that works for you. They also have some really new cool stuff they are doing with lights and your eyes that allow you to remember things that happened in your past that may because you some negativity. I dunno its worth a shot.

happiness is a compilation of small things you do daily to make yourself happy. everything counts down to eating breakfast and taking a shower. if you're not happy with the way things are, change them as much as you possibly can. life can get you stuck, but you have to keep your head up. depression can also mainly be caused by living in a negative environment; if you feel, think, say, act negative, you will shift the chemicals. so in effect, thinking positive will change things! if you really feel stuck, GO TO A COUNSELOR. it seriously changes life. in depression if you want to get better, you will get better. it's hard work, but it's worth it. i saw a psych for 2.5 years and it was the best decision i've made. i still have a lot to work on, but i made a lot of progress. it's really good to have someone you can talk to, just to vent, validate your emotions, and help you build the tools you need to adapt, get over, accept, and move on.

I smoked weed and that did wonders for me. Kept me from being depressed, helped me focused. Generally was the best for me.


I hated pharmies they tried to put me on.



Check out your options though. I have a couple friends that are taking heavy anti depressants that swear by them, like the shit took them from life sucks i wanna die to, holy fuck the world is awesome.


Def keep skiing. Try and put fun people around you, try to do things in life that make you happy, don't overlook the little things.

I feel like there's some mild misinformation in this thread. Weed does nothing to help depression, it masks it. While thinking positively, doing creative things, changing up your routine, and running can give you short term boosts and are generally healthy, they aren't viable long-term options for treating depression either. Depression isn't a result of not thinking positively enough or not exercising. Those are effects of other factors, and they're kind of insulting things to say as they put the blame on the person suffering from depression.

So I actually just talked to a counselor at my school. They offer free sessions so I might as well take advantage. It felt really good to talk about why Im the way I am. Im gonna meet with her more often now. Thanks for the advice NS!

if you don't like what your doing, try something different.

it sounds moronically simple it really helped me get out of a hole. you drive your life, and you can go anywhere. for me it was skiing more, starting to smoke weed again, working harder in school, and taking chances with the ladies and eventually getting a kickass girlfriend. but it could be entirely different for you, just because something worked for someone else doesn't mean you should do it, just do what YOU want to do. try what you wanna try and if you fail well your other options are practically limitless.

IVE GONE THROUGH IT, i still am.  it glues to your soul, and only proper actions, OVER TIME, will and can clean you.  go see a therapist, seriously i cannot stress this enough.  even if you can get over it yourself, a therapist will only accelerate your healing.  it may take a long time but tell friends.  for me friends are more important than family in this situation, they can relate and dont talk down.  if you need to talk, TALK!  it really does help.

You guys who say "Think positive" or "change your routine" have no idea what depression is. Depression results from chemical imbalances in the brain, not negative thinking. Techniques and counseling and diets and shit can make the effects of depression go away, but medication can be one of the only options.

Ask yourself why you are depressed? It usually comes down to a low selfesteem, you don't think highly of yourself. Then think about people living in a 3rd world country man. Be thankful for everything you got theres people starving in this world. We live in a beautiful place. check out this article I wrote it should pump you guys up.

shit sucks. i'm barely social anymore, i spend my time playing soccer or working out so i guess that has it's benefits, but i rarely hang out with people. my grades are fine but i have like no self confidence anymore. the only things that make me happy are skiing and my girl, but she lives back in my hometown, 2 hours away from my school. on top of that most people at school make fun of me for being in a long distance relationship.

everytime i feel like i'm doing well and i'm happier than normal everything hits me like a train and i just go back to being depressed you know? it sucks

No you're not. It's the other way around. Do you think people who are depressed want to be depressed? There is a reason why some medications induce suicide. It's chemicals, not controllable thoughts.

i agree with you to some extent, but self esteem and third world countries have no connection. i know plenty of depressed people who are EXTREMELY grateful for everything around them, the nicest, most humble and loving people i know are depressed, they just don't get the appreciation they give back from others around them. most depressed people try to make up for their being depressed by being compassionate towards others, i know i do.

My cousin Holly Bekkala jumped in front of a semi this summer, serious business... But it hurt so many people that knew her, I didn't see anyone smile for a month after that. If it gets that bad, seek counseling, I dunno, but suicide should never be thought of as a solution. Gotta remember how many people actually love you, even if they don't show it every day

yes ultimately you are the power of your emotions. there is chemicals going off in your brain yes. some people do need to be medicated for it for the help yes. I have pretty bad anxiety which stems from depression so I know what it's like. It's so hard to counteract the effects, but I've trained myself to do so. I find keeping very busy is super beneficial, so I don't have time to let my brain wander. Exercise is great too. Breathing is HUGE on controlling anxiety attacks, it's the lack of oxygen going to your brain when you start panic because when you have an anxiety attack you often forget to breathe right.

I have been off medicine since february 12th of this year, and it's a great accomplishment. All i'm saying is you can beat it yourself. There is light. For some its just harder to find, you can do it though.
