So apparently there is still going to be a 1d and 1ds, which i guess makes sense really. Expect a very high pixel count 1ds4 next year

Where'd you read that? I want to know.

Amalgamation of the 1D and 1Ds lines would mean to me that there won't be a 1Ds4... but it would make sense that Canon would release a new high pixel count camera, especially given the rumored specs of the Nikon D800

Photo forums, combined with simple logic, and the fact that canon hasn't specificly said they are discontinuing the 1d/1ds lines. Canon isn't going to give up on the pixel race against sony and nikon, and the 5d3 won't be professional build in all likely hood. A super high pixel 1ds4 is completely logical to compete with nikon and MF systems, and a 1d5(few years out assuming) will be cheaper for those who don't need the features of the 1dx. Having multiple options for consumers is completely logical, not every professional needs the same features as another.

On the other hand, with as high profit margins as cameras are, it seems unreasonable to have cameras with limited features when those features are not going to hold back anything else.

It's 2011. Cameras can do more and be more than they are now, I really believe that. Having two different bodies because they do different things is cumbersome enough, if you wanted backups you would have to be carrying around 4 cameras.

Maybe there's something I'm seriously missing about the design, or maybe it's planned so people feel the need for a camera "quiver", but it doesn't generally make sense to me the features camera companies leave out in different models. There's so many different 1d variations. I hate to see nikon doing the same thing but it looks like that's where it's headed.

Why do you think the 5d3 won't be as much a professional build (however you worded that)? I wouldn't imagine Canon would make it any less a professional oriented camera than it is now, but then again, I don't know Canon at all.

actually in the past they have reduced the build quality on their products...just look at the 50mm 1.8

i do love my 50 1.8, but i do wish it was still built like the old ones, more heavy-duty. i feel like im gunna break this lens everytime.

The fact that its only 18 megapixels on the full frame is huge. Hopefully no more cramming megapixels onto a sensor. I'm calling it as the best low light pro level SLR.

It's actually not logical for them to make a 1DsIV if you ask me. They said the 1D-X is the new flagship camera. What's the 1DsIV gonna have over the 1D-X? I couldn't think of anything really. Higher MP, but I guess it's more likely for them to make a 1D-X mark II in 2 years as the 1Ds mk III is far from outdated. It's a studio cam and doesn't need the FPS or all Af points.
I can see the 5D mkIII coming out earlier than the 1Ds (if there's going to be one) replacement. Possibly a lot of studio photogs will switch to the 5DmkIII for a while till the 1Ds mk IV arrives (or in my opinion, the replacement for the 1D-X)

Personally I'm thinking they're combining the two (1D+1Ds). Or that's what I would think is the most logical. Or at least this is the replacement for the 1Ds. They might make a 1DmkV, but I don't see that happening really. The thing about the 1DmkIV was that it was a good sports camera with the 10fps, but as the 1D-X already has 12 (14 in JPEG) FPS with a 50-60 image ánd it is FF makes me believe this actually is the new 1D line...

Looks pretty sweet, except they dropped the sd slot... I find it odd that my 1dsmk3, released in 2007, has still not been topped in the MP race. I'm going to stick with it.

How does shooting in a controlled setting constitute the need for more megapixels? Unless you mean large prints, in which case I don't see why you wouldn't shoot medium format...

Just read a post on Dan Carr's site about how the 1dx won't AF lenses with an aperture smaller then 5.6, that seems pretty stupid with how popular super tele's are combined with 1.4/2x TC's (as Dan does point out in his post).

sorry but its actually that it wont AF with lenses with a minimum aperture smaller than 8. so a 5.6 with a 1.4x wouldnt get AF and a 4 with a 2x wouldnt get AF.

still has AF until you reach lenses with a min of 8.

sorry my mistake, just finished reading and had the 5.6 number in my head, so yes you are correct

and Bryant, the 1ds3 HAS been topped in the pixel race, just not by canon. The d3x has been chugging along at 24.5 since 2008.

between canon and nikon yes.

best build, best weather sealing, best sensor (nikon does top it with pixel count though) and best lens system out. lets not get into phase 1 and that shit at the moment

See you said on the market, not just canon and nikon, you should be more specific with what you say.

"Best" is relative, many would argue the 5d2 is a better landscape camera because of it's size, and others(including my self) would say the d3x beats the 1ds3 in many categories(which can largely be backed up by testable data).

anyway, this is a 1dx thread, lets keep it that way

Oh I know it's been topped by Nikon.. I was just referring to Canon's market. And to EHeath, I do agree with you in most cases that 12MP is all that necessary, but in my work and how it's used, I need the higher MP to print much larger than a 12MP can go.
