NS: What career interests you?

I'm currently studying economics, but I'm still unsure what career I want to obtain.
The reason I decided to pursue economics is because I'm interested in how the world operates and it seems like a pretty versatile degree.

Not knowing what you want to do in the future sure is frustrating, but I'm sure there's loads of you folks in the same boat.

Now I ask NS; what career interests you and how do you plan on reaching your goals?

Going to college next year as a mech engineer major.

Why would anyone intelligent or educated want to belittle themselves by working shitty, long, hard hours at a manual labor job to make half-decent wages when they could go to college and make a shitload more money doing something they're interested in that just requires some book smarts and exam scores (dependent on their degree, of course)?

I was pretty dead set on going into the construction industry because it paid well. I got here, get paid pretty well but the work/life balance can be absolutely fucked sometimes.

Next step is becoming a ski instructor.

If you're considering the nursing route, definitely become a practitioner. My gf is a cardiac nurse right now but she's in school to be an acute care nurse practitioner, and her salary will most likely triple at least when she goes from RN to NP. It's only like two extra years of school and a lot of the things you learn are the same as in nursing school, you just have more responsibility.

This is the exact mentality that I'm talking about. The fact that trades are looked down on as a job for the dumb. Trades are a very respectable profession to be in, and they can work your mind much much harder than many office jobs that people spend 10 years in school to do. The lack in intelligence in the trades because of people like you is seriously causing harm, as those critical thinkers who put the trades where they are today are disappearing leaving those who can only follow what they were told to do leaving no room for expansion furthering of the skills. There are virtually no skilled craftsmen anymore as a direct result. Engineers certainly aren't helping the matter either.

Beacause someone has to do it. There will always be a demand for tradespeople. The prospect of self employment that many tradespeople do. Intelligent people in trades become foreman and supervisors and estimators doing little manual work for higher pay. Intelligent people will own companys but you still need the trade knowledge. Intelligent people will become consultants where their trade knowledge becomes a huge asset and engineering firms pay for your knowledge which can only be gained from years in a trade.

not sure what you mean by that. Hard rock for sure though. I want to work in mineral exploration. Right now I am in third year and have spent a little bit of time up north soil sampling for a geochemical exploration company.

not so impossible. there are plenty of music related careers other than pure performance.

and 3rd mates unlimited tonnage license for the merchant marine is what im working for now but was thinking of settling for a limited license and working on tugs instead so i can graduate earlier and start making money sooner.

i thought i wanted to be a financial advisor, turns out i fucking loathe it with a passion.

probably starting grad school in the spring to do a master's in accounting and then sit for the CPA exam to do corporate auditing instead

I'm just in the proces of finishing up a social work degree. The pay is going to be crappy and my work is generally going to be depressing, but I hope I can help people who need it most.

I'm thinking either architecture, finance/accounting or dentist. Undecided though, to be honest being a stay at home mom would be the life, sit around, go to the gym, lunch with friends, play with my kids. I wanted to be a teacher at one point, but you know what they say, those who cant do, teach. Well I can do and I want more money than that.

whatever you do, dont lock yourself into anything too soon
most people will change their college major a few times so dont be afraid to keep your eyes open

also, dont do something for the money. cliche, but i'm from the thought process of if you're doing something you love you'll never work a day in your life

although i am not somebody who works a job like that, i agree with everything you said.


i enjoy "trade" type jobs much more than the white collar ones i have a degree in and work, but the bottom line is that the majority of the time - the salary for a trade job just can't compete with the salary potential of a white collar job. it's sad, but true.

At the moment I'm in school for Tourism Management, don't really care if I end up in management or just as a guide or something after school all I know is I want a job in or close by the outdoors, preferably ski related

im a civil engineer, and pretty good at it...however im tryna get into upper mgmt as soon as possible because the profession never really interested me, but the money did.

The hope is to be able to gain enough experience/qualifications, and contacts withing the industry to be able to contract myself out, so i can live somewhere dope, work on my own schedule, and get paid lots to turn around drawings quickly.



If i had to do it all over again, i would go into forestry, or be a high school math or physics teacher and coach football and baseball.


If construction work paid more, i would do that in a heartbeat. the summer i spent doing landscaping/construction was the funnest job ive ever had.

I'm in my second year of Civil Engineering and I love it. Classes are tough, but I heard it's easier after you get the general math and science done, which I will have done after this semester. I spent my summer at an engineering internship for City of Duluth engineering doing surveying and construction staking and it was the best job I've ever had.

wow i can;t believe there is only one business major in this whole thread.  I want to emphasize in entrepreneurship since I am pretty much managing two businesses at the moment; some background on what the hell i am doing would be nice.  To achieve my goals, I plan on saving a couple dollars a month until I decide to invest the money into a potential profitable business after I am done with college.  I have many ideas but that is my main goal so far.

I would like to take some accounting classes and entrepreneurship courses, I'm not looking at getting a degree, just some working knowledge. I work trades right now but my passion has always been real estate. Working trades is allowing me to build startup capital quickly (as apposed to "saving a few dollars a month", which realistically won't get you very much savings) so I can start investing it into business ventures at a later time. The contacts I'm gaining within the construction industry are going to help me with my goal of building an apartment building or cater to baby boomers and build a seniors living complex and be on my way to riches through passive income. That goal is further down the line, within the next two years I'd like to open my first take out wing joint. Sure its a risky industry, but the franchise I'm looking into is doing well and with my electrical and other trade knowledge I'll be able to renovate my leased space and save huge on startup costs.
