At the moment there are only three places where it is allowed in this area - backside of Mammoth, one run on June Mtn, and one run at Alpine Meadows. You need to have an S3 rating at all three.
As great as it is to do laps on a chair lift, this sport is best enjoyed in the backcountry. We have a bunch of great spots where we run everybody up on snowmobiles in the winter, and quads in the summer.
Being a pilot helps in that you understand airspeed is your ally, and to never get slow. But in reality a non-pilot will learn just as fast as a pilot. That's what is great about the sport.
