Medical marijuana in california being shut down

The Obama administration has ordered all medical-marijuana dispensaries in California to shut down within 45 days or they will be prosecuted and have their property confiscated for violating federal drugs laws, the Associated Press reports.

Even licensed outlets operating under the 1996 voter-approved medical-marijuana law are subject to the federal crackdown. California's four U.S. attorneys plan an announcement Friday.

AP says the federal prosecutors have notified at least 16 pot shops or their landlords.

This comes as no surprise.

Whoever mentioning corporate interests and all that bullshit, it is much simpler than that. The so called "green rush" represents a large chunk of change that the federal government is not getting a piece of. That is why they want to shut it down. The federal government doesn't care one iota if people are smoking weed in California, only that the people who are making money off of it are not giving that money to the IRS.

The real tragedy here is that despite all the naysayers, at its best the system works great. Having held a recommendation (for a broken jaw) in California I can tell you that a large portion of the buyers I encountered were older folk who just needed a legitimate source to buy some ganja. Somebody mentioned that the shops sell their "2nd rate merchandise" which is absolute horse shit. Like any competitive enterprise the clubs have to compete for business. Often time their MJ is among the best, albeit pricy.

Like any market, killing the supply is not going to kill the demand. The demand will still be there, and will be increasingly filled by illegitimate sources, namely Mexicans who are associated at varying levels with the cartels. Illegal marijuana production represents a boom business for many illegal immigrants here in the United States.

The big mistake was not letting California marijuana dispensaries fall under a government monopoly, on a level similar to say the OLCC (Oregon liquor control board) in Oregon. If the state runs a monopoly on it they can monitor and control the factors of production, collect all the profits (which all go to the government), make sure their sources are legit (background checks, etc), and control the price. It would be much harder for the federal government to raid shops run by the state of California, seeing as how all the revenue would go directly to the state.

The talk about how the medical marijuana system is abused applies on the same level to our current system for prescription drugs. Any moron kid who claims he can't concentrate is given speed (adderall), and any patient who comes in complaining of "severe back pain" is given oxycodone.

I love how everyone jumps on this as an opportunity to criticize Obama when he is not even mentioned or quoted in the article. It's not like he makes or even has influence in every decision the feds make, it's impossible, there's too much shit going on at once for one person to keep track of it all.

I must have missed the section in the constitution where the federal government had the power to decide everything for the states.......

o that's right because it doesn't. It states that all other duties and decision outside of the constitution will be handled at the state level....... so like drinking age, smoking age, schools, drug enforcement, traffic laws..... funny how all these are handled by the federal government. I hate that the government of the US can blatantly get away with breaking its own constitution over and over.

medicina; marijuana is a completely abused system based on semantics, to keep raging mothers and social conservatives happy that weed isn't legal, its just being used for 'medicine.' i'm not a med student, but I don't think any self-respecting doctor would actually prescribe ingesting combusted plant materials at hot temperatures, when much safer synthetic alternatives are available. just LEGALIZE this shit prohibition of weed is a complete joke, and same with medicinal weed.

Well he's just making a point that people WANT to smoke it, because many of the so-called patient are abusing the system just to get the hook up on the chron they would be smoking anyways. Like my brother for instance, 18 year old healthy male who got his card because he fractured vertebrae in his back playing HS football. I was under the assumption that Obama said he would make sure that medical marijuana was left alone and ruled under the laws in California. He is the President I am sure he can tell the feds to chill out a little bit... I mean they are destroying something that is helping California stay on the map!

Not true man I've had my card for 8 months in Oregon and finally gotten pretty chill with some of the shop employees and growers, and the best stuff is not for sale. growers almost always keep the best for personal smoke and to give as samples. tops are kept, middies nugs are sold and bottom pingers are used to make oils and eddies. top nugs are usually like 4 inches long at least and i've never seen anything in the shop bigger than 2 grams.

I will admit to being wrong here. I thought congress was the governmental body in charge of shutting dispensaries down and congress cannot be told what to do. They do whatever the hell they want. It's not them this time, though. My bad.

Oregon has what, like 2 shops in Portland?

In Sacramento alone there are 10-12 dispensaries. If they sell shit they're not going to get repeat business. Obviously the growers save themselves some of the choicest nugs, but if they've got any kind of legit operation they have much more than they could ever smoke.

It doesnt matter who it is in the GOV.. president, congress, whoever the fuck, they do what they want. This shutting down medical marijuana shit is retarded though ABSOLUTELY retarded. Not even because I smoke weed, I live in a state that doesnt have any medical program. I just think its stupid to take away something that was voted in favor by the majority of residents. I mean states are supposed to govern themselves that was the point of this country and constitution.
