It seems to me that Tom (and it seems a lot of pro skiers) became so popular due to being genuinely nice people. Based on interviews and videos, a lot of the mainstream pro skiers seem like really personable people.

just a thought.

(I realize they are also famous because of their awesome skiing)

Simon Dumont is famous and he's got the shittiest attitude. Yeah he's well media trained, looks nice when he's on Ellen and when you meet him in person he puts on a smile. But he cries when he gets beaten

This... Yo any athlete gets upset when they get knocked out of the playoffs. Simon doesnt do his best at the biggest event of the year. Obviously he is going to be upset. YO HE WANTS TO WIN WHAT A DOUCHE

WALLISCH IS ALSO FAMOUS BECAUSE WHEN HE WON SUPERUNKNOWN HE WAS DOING THINGS THAT A LOT OF OTHERS WEREN'T.

AND HE STILL HAS ONE OF THE BEST TECH:STYLE RATIOS IN SKIING IMO. ALONG WITH SAMMY C.

agreed. simon is one of the best halfpipe skiers i have ever watched. hes the one who made me want to start doing halfpipe. his determination for what he does is incredible and of course he will be upset/angry when he doesnt reach the goals he set for himself during those comps.

i believe that is exactly when peoples character is questioned and judged most.  especially in sports.

high pressure:  Jordan scored 38 with a 104 fever in a finals game..LeBron disappears in the 4th quarter...i think it would be unanimous to say that Jordan is thought to have stronger character.

Tom Brady leads super bowl winning drives, Jay cutler sits on the sidelines late in the 4th with a jacket on...whose character is considered stronger?

Curt schilling pitches with a tendon surgically repaired tendon hours before the game...a-rods post-season BA is 20 points lower than regular season....

perception is reality, if people think youre a shitty person, its prolly because youve been a shitty person.
the fact that dumont crys and bitches when he folds is probably the most accurate judge of his character

i get what you're saying. but simon does perform under pressure. many argue that he threw down a sicker and more technical run in x-games this year than torin yw, yet placed behind him. this puts him in jordan's, brady's, or shilling's position, not lebrons, cutlers, or a-rods. so shouldn't he have a right to be mad if he tried his hardest, performed under pressure, threw down an equally sick if not better run, but still didn't win?

yeah he performed well, but he reacted like a child....like i said before, he won with a dub front over a dub twelve...jon and wester did not cry, they shrugged their shoulders and congratulated him.

When you get into a certain level of competition, there shouldn't be a handicap for age. Because clearly he is on the same level as the rest of the field as he is in the x-games, so his age shouldn't be a factor of judging. Yeah, he's young, but that doesn't mean he deserved his podium spot.

Yeah, if anything, the way people react under extreme pressure and unforgiving situations should be the best judge of their character. Anyone can fake it and come off as a super nice guy and be well liked under regular circumstances. But in the strenuous situations where you barely make it, those are where peoples true faces come out

no, people in extreme circumstances reveal their reactions to extreme circumstances, and should be taken as such, if your mother died and you cried does that mean you are secretly a cry-baby?

no because you dont cry when you stub your toe, that reaction was specific to that situation.

Simon getting upset about a contest that he clearly tried hard to win, trained a lot and worked hard for, can not be extrapolated to say that he would freak out over a ping pong match, it means that he would be upset if another situation at the same level as the xgames arose, you could expect him to be upset.

 But now that he has been through the situation once already, his reaction will most likely be different, maybe more angry and less sad, maybe more accepting of the situation, who knows.

someones personality is a very complex thing, not a black and white issue, and reactions to situations of different magnitudes is not a linear scale.

anyways, this thread is slightly off track, it was supposed to be kind of a trend i noticed and how tom wallisch was a prime example rather than an in depth analysis of simon dumont.
