i think that the best candidate should get the job..period. race should absolutely not matter...If a lesser candidate that is hispanic gets the job over a better candidate that is white, then that is racist. I dono how its not considered racist.

most likely the reason is that theyve done shit through highschool and think they can expect to get into a college just because theyre black. thats not fair to asians white ppl or anyone else whos being denied admittance into a certain college .

no its not, i attended public highschool for my freshman year. this school was 50 percent white 45 percent black and 5 percent latino. i was in all accelerated classes except for my math class, which was normal geometry. the class was half white and the rest was pretty much black. as i recall seeing is the majority of the african american kids being rude and disrupting class, not doing assignments cheating on tests and routinely skipping class. there were some black kids that worked hard in that class and more power to them to get into college, which they will if the college deems that the work they exerted in highschool qualifies them to go into that specific college.(if it wasnt for affirmative action colleges wouldnt make a big deal of finding out whether the applicants where black white green whatever.)

black people use the past 2 decades of horrible treatment as an excuse that they should be allowed into harvard even if they dicked off during highschool. black people shouldnt use them being black as a crutch, theyre just as capable as white people, and need to realize that and stop thinking that everyone in the world is out to get them, and that they dont deserve all these free handouts

Back to the topic- Affirmative action is a decent idea, it just isn't working as it's currently set up.

the flag has nothing do with slavery, it has to do with southern pride, i have plenty of black friends.

affirmative action is rascist because it alienates black people, even if i was asian id be pissed that im more qualified to go to a certain college and some random black dude who did less than me, gets in because hes black and then i get denied admittance. thats whats wrong.

^affirmative action gives bonuses to all minorities not just black people.

I think it's pretty rediculous. A year or so ago the University of Michigan got in a big controversy about affirmative action. They used a point system for admitting students and you got more points for being black than you did for having a 4.0.

i never did that, i know plenty of african americans who work hard, but im sorry look all around the south in schools and its a brutal reality that the majority of african american kids in highschool dont even care. look at any majority black neighborhood in atlanta......its just sad

That is fucking priceless. Atlantaski, you've done it again. Hahahahaha...

Anyways, from a purely theoretical standpoint, Affirmative action is wrong for a number of reasons. Firstly, while it might help individual people in certain cases to overcome racial discrimination, the opposite (wherein the minority is hired over the more competent majority member) is becoming more and more prevalent, to the point where the two cancel each other out, and there's no benefit. There might even be a deficit in utility, it's hard to calculate these things. Secondly, it reinforces the racial barriers that everyone's trying to overcome, and cements the inherently racist notion that 'these people are different from these people', which really should be counterintuitive. Thirdly, from the deontological standpoint, the act itself, of giving a person a leg up for arbitrary reasons, is wrong and inconsistent. We can see this by universalizing the maxim: if we were to hire peopl based on any arbitrary reason, there would be no point in having a screening process at all. So that covers both major schools of moral thought. Both say it's wrong.

That being said, it may still be practical to attempt to ingrain the idea of equal opportunity in the workplace, as most workplaces are still far from equal (note how few woen still hold higher-up positions). It just seems illogical to try to promote equal opportunity by denying equal opportunity, if you see what I mean.

let me back that up, aside from avoiding any racism that may, and does occur in admissions boards, it also can help level the playing field in a way. inner city schools suffer from lack of funding and are not able to provide the same level of education as a better funded school

if you go by demographics theres more minorities in poorly funded schools, and yes total funding in atlanta is large for public schools in the city, but that money has to be distributed among all of the schools the budget zoen covers

Yes, but see, that's not really the fault of the other students who worked hard in areas that give good educations, succeeded, and can't go to college because some underprivileged kid from the inner city has his spot. Rather than promoting affirmative action, what really needs improvement is the education system in problem areas, so that the inner city kid has the same chance. That's not a ridiculous demand. Bye bye, 1/8 of the defense budget (oh darn, we'll have to make do without some of those stealth bombers). It's a mistake to try to solve one problem by making up another opposing problem.

Its kind of funny that the only person who isnt a minority is white males when they dont make up the majority of the population. I just think that the white culture perpetuates wealth and prosperity which the culture kind of glamorizes. While the black culture at the moment glamorizes killing people, being oppressed, making easy money, various other things which are creating an image thats holding them back. Who knows maybe racism is at the root of hiring practices. How else are you gonna judge someone youve never met, preconcevied notions. But yeah affirm. action definetly promotes seperatism or racism.

Maybe, but he has a point: if we look at these undereducated, underpriveliged people and say, 'well, we'll even the playing field by making things easier for you,' what kind of message does that send? It makes no sense. As for what we should do in the meantime while the system is improved: IT'S NOT BEING IMPROVED. There should BE no meantime. It should be done NOW. It's not something that would take a hell of a long time... maybe a couple of years, if it was made a priority and spending was allocated accordingly.
