Where to mount JJ..-5 or -2

Im getting 185s and Im only 5'6'' but ski very aggressively, but they're going to be a little big haha so i was thinking -2 might be better for me. t-hall the designer of the ski mounts at -2 but ive had people seriously advocate for the -5 mount because of its ability to really maximize the side-cut of the ski.

suggestions?

i had mine at -2.5 and loved them.

personally i would go there.

-2 if you want it to be more jibby and better switch, closer to -5 if you do more charging.

Well, it really is quite dependent on your particular style of riding. If you like to mob switch alot (particularly in the pow) then a -2 would be a great place to start. However, if your riding forwards most the time and want stability at high speed in one direction, and more stompability on cliffs the -4 range would be a good way to go.

right in the placenter! naw, id put it -2. youll have more than enough float. keep it jibby close to center. ittl be of advantage in tighter trees too.

-5 back all the way. I've rode them at center and 2.5 back on my first pair then i rode my last pair at 5 back and thats where you should put it. I know thall rides it more center but lets face it. none of us ride like hall, even though we all wish we could. With you being heavier and short it will be easier for you at 5 back too. if you can't ride a ski switch at -5 you are just a shitty skier, I ride my 191 on3p wrens mounted at -9 switch all the time

First off, I mean no offense by this post, but....

Of course it is possible to ride a ski switch at -9. In fact you could probably still ride a ski switch even if the bindings were mounted on the very backs of the skis. The point is, however, that it will not be ideal for riding switch. I am willing to bet that you ride switch just on groomers and when conditions aren't great. However, for those of us that like riding pow switch more than forwards, -9 will simply not do.
Also, give the kid a break. He's just asking. I know I you were there once.

its simple to ride switch at -5 back. With the shape of the ski and the rocker tail it make it so easy to ride backwards on pow and groomers. I ride these all mountain cause they can still rip on groomers but excel in the pow. I ride switch almost 1/3 of the time out and i think armada recommends -5 back on a freestyle pow ski for a reason.

alright i might just go -5 though i just feel like landing switch would be harder and you have to lean far forward im not worried about just switch carving

I have no problem landing switch either. I lean as far forward as i normally do just so my tips dont dive in but its all personal prefference. Like I've said before I've rode them center, -2.5 and -5 and found for me it rides best at -5 back.

Man, go for -2. At your height you'll still have plenty of float and be able to charge as jjs can charge with their like 14m sidecut. Also, in the trees, you wont be battling a longer tip, which might be hard for someone that's your height. I mean, if you're set on -5, -5 is still relatively close to the center of the ski. I'm just a big fan of sizing up and mounting close to center. When you're mounted far back, sure you can charge a bit harder, but being mounted forward you have more tail for support on big drops, it's easier to ride switch, you're more nimble in the trees IMHO, and it's possible to throw so many different types of turn shapes that you just cant do on a traditionally mounted ski. You cant slash, drift, or slarve NEARLY as well on a ski mounted back as opposed to one mounted forward. It's only a 3cm difference in your case, but I would still go for the forward mount.

Why are you only speculating -2 and -5? Find a happy medium between those points.That said, I rode the 185s at -5 and really liked them there but I'm bigger than you. If I was your size I'd go -4.

I don't think -5 is really that traditional for a pow ski man. Sizing up and mounting closer to center doesn't make sense with five dimensions and a pintail design I don't think -2 really makes sense. Then you're pushing that tail further up instead of letting it sink. Just my opinion but I wouldn't go beyond say -3/4. It was designed to slarv, slash, at -5 anyways.

Why would you not go -5? That's recommended for a reason. Also, the JJ is a five dimension ski, meaning that -5 is much closer to core center than you think. Plus, what's the difference between -2 and -5 for switch? It's basically an inch difference, your weight distribution will barely change at -2, but the ski will ski much worse at -2 than -5. Go -5, that's where my JJs are at and I love 'em.

*2 inch; if you add one inch to the tip, you're taking an inch from the tail, so the end length difference is double the mount difference. I've never personally skied jjs, but I just thought I'd throw that out there. Not that it makes that much of a difference...

The recomended mark on the JJ is -5 and because of the design of the ski it is where it skis best. If you go to far forward of the center of the taper you lose a lot in performance of the ski. If you want more of a jib feel then go to the forward mark, but even at -5 the JJ is plenty playful.

I'm 5'3" on the 175 JJ mounted at -3cm and I love it there.  I rode my first pair at the recommended -5, but they weren't as playful and riding switch at -3cm has been easier and they feel even more maneuverable.

Yes, recommended line. And fine I'll concede to you by calling it early taper or half-pintail or whatever you want, but the ski definitely lends itself to that design in the tail.

You like riding pow switch more than forwards? So you just ski backwards all day? Youre fucking doing it wrong.

My JJs are mounted at -3 from center. I just picked a random spot and mounted them, measured later. I dont give a fuck, learn to ski~

haha easy man. but mounting without measuring is just a dumb thing to do to a 700 dollar ski.. depending on where you mount will change how the skis perform and your skiing style a bit. -3 seems to be a good spot tho..

THIS! I hate it when people talk about the center of the ski as the center of the sidecut. Keep it simple. Center, and Reccommended. Also, when you say + something or - something, make sure to specify whether its -2 from rec. or -2 from center. Makes a big difference.

T-Hall does not mount at -2 from center, but at true center on the JJ. I got mine at -1 from center and they are a dream. That is what an Armada rep told me to do so I am sticking to it.

On his fan page Tanner said he mounted this years JJ's at -3 from center. And an armada rep probably told you what he personally likes, it doesn't have to do with his knowledge of the ski most likely.

True center refers to the exact measured center of the ski. Core center refers to the center of the sidecut, or where the ski is at it's exact skinniest in the middle of the ski (or widest if reverse sidecut). These two terms are the same if the ski is symmetrical, but for any directional ski, they can be quite far apart. Generally the rec is at core center, but there will be instances (like k2 hellbents for example) where it would be very unwise not to mount pretty far forward of the rec.
As to what people are refering to in this thread, that's the confusing part. WE DUNNO

OHHHH in this thread, -5 or -2 is refering to -5 or -2 from TRUE center. I believe -5 happens to be the reccommended mount for JJs.

I was told, I bet by that same Armada rep to mount them were they recommend to mount it. Im sure he just listens to your riding type and says that. For the ski to perform the way its suppost to, then you should mount them at the recommended points on the skis. But you can always mount them forward more to gain more tail and help with spins, riding and landing switch. Its all personal prefference in the end.
