oh theres lots of reasons, the main one being checks and balances, if the goverment is th eonly ones with weapons then the government is the only ones with power. And lots of people like to hunt and sport shoot too. And even if they did take guns away bad people are still gonna kill people they'll just use knives or hammers or run you over or something

Its not the gun that kills people, its the person. If everyone would be responsible with guns we wouldn't have a problem. Guns are also a defense mechanism. A japanese general in WW2 said that if they would have invaded the continental united states they would have been met with a gun behind every corner. Nearly every family in the 1940's had a firearm of some kind. Guns have only just recently become a "problem" to some people in america.

I'm gonna quote some local laws that I deem pretty worthy, incoming wall o'text:


"In order to acquire and possess a firearm or firearm component, the applicant must have a justifiable purpose for its use. The applicant must also fulfil the application requirements for acquisition permits.

When applying for a firearm acquisition permit, the following must be presented:
-passport or ID card
-the necessary documents supporting the application.

A firearm acquisition permit is valid for up to six months (except in the case of weapons collectors).

Approved purposes of use

-shooting of animals as permitted by hunting legislation
-shooting competitions and other target shooting
-work in which a firearm is necessary
-demonstration, filming or other similar presentation
-keeping in a museum or collection
-keeping as a memento
-signalling.

A permit may only be granted for a firearm or firearm component that is well suited for the purpose given by the applicant and is not excessively powerful or destructive.

Moreover, an acquisition permit may be granted only to persons who, on the basis of their state of health and behaviour, are considered suitable for possessing a firearm or firearm component. A criminal record or intoxicant abuse, for example, may be obstacles to the granting of a permit."


Plus, in the near future you need to go to a psych evaluation and get "OK" papers from a doctor to be able to get a gun permit.

everyone has the right to bear arms. theres no question about that. Protection alone, is a justifiable reason to own a gun. if someone wants to kill someone else, they dont need a gun to do it, and they're sure as hell not gonna register one in their name, and then use it to kill. Also, If guns are illegal, then only criminals will have them.

I am all for the responsibly use of cars but how will we weed out that a small majority of people who buy cars that are irresponsible? Oh wait it's almost impossible.

Why punish a very large majority of gun loving, self protecting, well minded people for the actions of a slim group of people?

It would honestly be the same as making cars, or sticks illegal because people can use those to kill people or injure them.

I'd be hard-pressed to be the one to talk anyone out of having any guns in our modern society. Especially someone who seems to have made up their mind and just asking "Why not?"

Who are you protecting yourself from with guns? What's with all this illegal people talk? Seriously. I'm talking about abolishing guns. Weapons. Warfare. Highly utopic, yet possible. The thing you always hear as a comeback "Being at war has been a part of our species since Day One" is becoming obsolete as there certainly seems to be a large amount of people who are all for a pacifist society.

A well armed nation is a polite nation.


Here are my thoughts on the matter:

-any and all firearms primarily designed and used for combat against other humans should not be allowed to be owned, made, or distributed. this would include practically all handguns, all fully automatic weapons, and many semi automatic. Such as sub machine guns, assault rifles, etc.

essentially the only weapons that the general public should be allowed to own are weapons that are used for legitimate purposes such as hunting.

-any ammunition designed for combat against humans should not be allowed. like incendiary, armour piercing, frag rounds etc etc.


there is absolutely no need to own an Uzi and having them legal and available is only asking for trouble.

People like you piss me off. Please state your thoughts as to why guns are a bad idea instead of just making fun of others opinions. I will state mine and sorry for no spacing I'm on iNS. Well first off hunting, it is a very fun recreational sport maybe some people like to know that they're meal was killed in a reasonable matter instead of a shot to the head in a slaughter house. Sport shooting is next this is also very fun recreational sport. Some people maybe don't have the skill to play other sports but if they are committed anyone can become an amateur competition shooter if they have disaplen (sp?). Next is the reason why it is in our constitution. We have an army of our peers in the revolutionary war people took their guns and went out and caught for our country while this isntthe case anymore it is the reason why we have that right. Next is self defense if someone breaks into my house I should have a right to shoot him if the need arises Next is just a fact. Most murders and armed robberies are done with illegal guns such as something that has been stolen or smuggled into the country so if we take guns away from the law abiding citizens it isn't going to solve the main problem here. Sorry for the jumbo paragraph and this is something that gets me pretty heated so if I came off like an ass my bad. And please read the whole post before quoting.

Yes but most people who own semi-automatic weapons, handguns, etc are responsible with them and use them for fun.

It is fun to go out and shoot targets or just shooting guns. I am going to get a 6 shot revolver and hopefully my concealed carry once I turn 21...Why you ask? Because I think 6 shooters are sick and want to own one so I can go out and shoot it.

Also it is not asking for trouble. They are going to be illegal guns no matter what. I highly doubt any of the guns that are used in a majority of shootings are even legal or registered.

The guns are not the problem, people are. People have been killing each other for thousands of years. But like I said before we shouldn't punish a large group of responsible gun owners because of the actions of people who are abusing the system anyways.

Just seems like it would punish the responsible people and encourage the irresponsible people to keep doing what they are doing.

abolishing guns is impossible. if you think otherwise that is sad. do you think the government will give up their guns too? you dont live in america, but if the government were the only ones with guns, they could do whatever they wanted because they would have all the power. even though 9 out of 10 people will never have to use a firearem they bought for protection, just letting it be known that you have one keeps people in their place

There will be illegal guns no matter what. But take out the guns that are most used violent crimes and you're homicide rate plummets. I'm talking make it practically impossible to get anywhere near an assault rifle unless you're in the military. Why would anyone need one anyways if not for crime? there is absolutely no need.

And you only have to look at the statistics to realize that having guns easily accessible makes a huge increase in violent crime.

United States is 5th in the world for homicide rate using firearms at approximately 4/100,000 people. Compare to say Finland where Mike-O stated their reasonable law where the rate is 10x less.

Why would you need to have any firearm that's not used for any legitimate reason?

Assault rifles are really useful in killing predators such as coyotes since you have multiple shots and the ar for example is super reliable and easy to clean. Alsso they are fun as he'll to target shoot with

The problem with guns is that there is no way to make sure that every single person that owns one is going to use it responsibly, legally owned or not. And the problem with abolishing guns is that there is no way to make sure people dont acquire them illegally. Its a catch 22. I am not against gun, I own three for hunting/sport shooting, but sometimes I wonder.

Ah, Europeans, us pussies. Funny to group such a wide geographical area into a single stereotype - pussies.

While no match for Serbian Military Service, I've been trained in the army, as many others of us European pussies, and while this may be a stretch considering I have no idea about your weapon background or marksman skills, I could say right now that I have a shitload of more experience and expertise with an assault rifle than you do. Correct me if you feel wronged.

Before saying "Well dah, what's with all the pacifist and anti-weapon BS if you were in the army yadayada", remember that things change. People change. Life situations change. Societal situations change. Think about that when quoting your obsolete-growing consitutional right to "bear arms".

the idea of no more violence is great (and im sure anyone agrees), but its absolutely not possible simply by "making guns illegal and abolishing war". there will always be conflict, so this idea is slightly unrealistic (yet it would be great, don't get me wrong).

i think people should be able to own a gun because in any event (which there are) that one needs to defend ones self, they should be able to do so.

i personally dont want to own one because i dont have a need for one, and recreational animal killing isn't my thing. so dont jump to conclusions about me haha, i just think people should be able to keep their rights.

I think the "constitutional right" argument is funny because when it was enacted Americans used guns to ward off Native American attacks and foreign countries marching around our lands and or for hunting/sport..... I really don't understand why a typical American has the right to buy an AK-47,Uzi,...ect
such arms exist to kill other humans- basic rifles and most pistols (handled properly) on the other hand are fine IMO.
