Most Useful padding for Skiiing?

I'm ready to throw myself like a ragdoll this winter and this dude at my local shop says I should get some padding...Is it useful or should I ditch the idea.

its not padding but spandex/compression shorts are well worth it!

it's useful for confidence, I wouldn't worry about a back protector unless hitting 60 footers, but a helmet, hip pads, and a mouthguard are useful.

Helmet (obviously) and I think that hip pads are a good idea. I took so many falls to my hips last year that I couldn't put any pressure whatsoever on them (I couldn't lay on my side on my bed or anything) so I think im gonna have them this year. A Mouthguard isnt a bad idea either, it can help prevent concussions

Tail bone/ hip pads really help for park, back protector or a pack if your skiing big mountain/ trees/ cliffs can definitely be a life saver

hip pads are def worth it i take such a beating to my hips riding rails all year its wear your gonna fall and hurt yourself like 90 percent of the time as a skier PROTECT YOU HIPS

I started wearing hip/ass pads last winter and loved it. The little bit of protection really helps when slamming on a rail or ice.

for me its nuts and knee protection, and ofcourse a helmet.
but ive bruised my knees so often on rails and thank god ive never hit my nuts on a rail, but i def. wont let it happen, hence the nut protection.

i recommend sliding shorts like ones you would use for baseball. its noticeable when you slide out of you are moving on your thighs, no rubbing or burns

im in the same boat, but for the compression shorts question when ever i know im going to try some new stuff in the park i always wear my football girdle, its low profile with pads built into it, works good

How about spine protectors?? I know jon olsson wears one but what are they good for? i dont crash straight on my back very often. and even then it doesnt hurt that bad.

These are my first pair of impact shorts. I only ordered them about a week ago. Soon as i get them, i'll take better pics and let you know how they are. There are some better ones on the market, the ones i got seemed like a good safety/money option. Just hope the pads dont move around under my ski pants. That shit will be annoying as fuck.

helmets are definately a must if you don't have one already !

i also wear red impact shorts with soft gel padding, these aren't too thick/confining and provide plenty of protection

then when i set out specifically for park or freeriding, i also wear a backprotector, i've got a scott but i'm not very happy about it, the POC ones seem a lot better to me !

I bought a pair off a buddy after he was finished with football season. They worked GREAT, but I wish they had more padding going across my butt and not only my hips. So I sold mine and am looking for a ski-specific pair.

However, there is nothing saying that the football pads won't work well for you, mine were slightly small on me and the pads sat forward on my hips anyways

So in an earlier post i mentioned I just bought a pair of impact shorts. They came today.Thought i'd fill anyone interested into the ones I choose.

There the Crash Pads 2500, I got them XsportsProactive.com for $74.95.

Seem like a quality pair of shorts right out the box. Fit well and all the protective pads seem well placed. The ass proctector doesn't feel bulky at all. We'll see how it products the ass bone. I'm off for a week long ski trip next week and will 100% be falling on my ass multiple times a day. Hoping they were a good buy and save my ass!

I have sixsixone bomber shorts, they are mountain bike shorts but they work perfectly for skiing too. They are pretty much just basketball shorts with pads, they fit real loose and I like that versus tight fitting compression short type things.

Not only does it protect your teeth/tongue, mouth guards help minimize the risk of getting concussions by absorbing the shock when you hit your head

I'd invest in a quality back protector and impact shorts. I run a poc, and it's okay. But I'd like a little more protection. Wrist guards, knee braces, and stuff like that are nice but can seriously limit movement. But they are cheaper and better than blown knees and broken wrists. I won't ski without my back protector, impacts, and a quality helmet. And that's coming from someone that's broken his back twice, tailbone once (bruised 4 times), and sprained and broken a few other things a lot more than once. Don't skimp on protection, it will save your life. lol.

if youre mostly doin spins, id suggest some hip padding. makes it so much more comfortable when you land on youre side by accident and helps with falling on rails too

definitely get a back protector and hip/tailbone pads. there are plenty of hip/tailbone options made for football that you can pick up at any sports store. some ski shops will carry back protectors but you will likely have to order. i highly recommend slytech back protectors. lots of people (jon olsson) like poc ones but the plastic plates lock when you bend backwards which makes flips awkward because you can't get full articulation of your back. slytech makes theirs out of a material that softens with body heat so you keep full range of motion and then instantly stiffens when it is hit. it works absurdly well. you may not think you fall directly on your back but many falls indirectly affect your back or you could partially be on your back without realizing it. you'll notice more when you wear the pad. it's great. now this past winter i fell hard onto my shoulder, turns out it was a a-c separation so thats why im looking towards the second one even if the shoulder pads dont do much it will make me feel a little better haha

I posted this in another thread, thought it might be helpful in here

Poc spine protectors are pretty nice, and protect well, i've used them, and owned a similar one. they aren't noticeably heavy, but more awkward and a little bulgy, and i always had the problem of the waist belt riding up.

I highly recommend looking into slytech,http://www.slytechprotection.com/back-protection/2nd-skin-logo-standard/
i got one of these last year, and i wear it without the straps, and just wear a tight under armor over it.
It's really nice, because your body heat makes it really pliable, so you can barely feel that you are even wearing it, and then it hardens on impact. The tail bone pad is super nice, too. And no shoulder straps means no riding up.
