Interactions with Homeless people

Well now's the time we all gather 'round and tell the folks on here of our interactions with the less fortunate, they can either be lighthearted, or extremely scary cause we all know those bums can be pretty unpredictable, so i'll start:

I live in SoCal, so there's alot of bums out here, and where there's bums there're shopping carts. Me and one of my friends were out skateboarding the beach last october when we came across one such shopping cart. It was parked next to a public restroom, and without thinking me and my friend proceeded to drage the cart across the beach and throw it off the pier into the ocean, oh we had quite a laugh. So on our way back we passed this guy holding all this junk, he asked us 'Have you seen a shopping cart?' me friend just looks at me, and I'm like 'Why would there be a shopping cart on the beach...' It was about that time the guy notices the tracks in the sand leading to where we just walked from, he drops his shit and starts yelling at us, I couldn't understand a damn thing and he starts swinging at my friend. So I do what any guy with a skateboard would do, I bashed him in the back of the head while he was punching my friend. Ah such a lively bum, me and my friend had a laugh while we skated away, the bum was unconcious. Who's next?

I talked to a bum on the streets of seattle about how he had once been a succesful computer programmer, but now he had nothing and lived in a cardboard box... sorta sucks.

That might be why I'm majoring in physics now

^^ How would you like it if somebody came to your house and threw all of your worldly possesions into the ocean and laughed about it?? Homelessness is a serious problem and is much more than these folks don't want to get a job, most of them would love a job and a home and love leading a normal life, as my fellow DLer above me pointed out a bum he met in seatle was a comp programmer that was down on his luck, not everybody who is poor is a moron that needs to be laughed at or chastised for being in the position they are in, they may just need a little help.

Most homeless ppl is patients released from mental hospitals when they couldnt afford keeping them under their wings anymore. Some of them is Vietnam vets gone crazy. They cant help it. If that guy starts swinging, at least you could have do is walk away instead of being an asshole and giving him another headache to deal with cuz you ruined his 'home'.

Yeah, that's god-awful what you did. I went to help out at a soup kitchen last saturday, and a lot of them are really nice. One dude gave my dad his resume, and he was quite successful earlier in life.

Here's another story. There was this girl in Dallas, Chante, who was a nurse, she was goin home from a party, and she hit a homeless guy. The guy flew into her windshield, and was half inside, and half outside her car, and he couldn't get out. Chante parked the car in garage and forgot about him until her house started smelling. Then she tried to put him in a dumpster, and got caught, and is prob. still in prison now. The himeless guy was homeless because he gave a lot of money to his girl friend earlier in life, and she left him, and things went downhill from there. Sad story.

i had this one bum come sit next to me while i was selling ice cream at work. he was like 'if you had a bag of the ganj out here you'd sell that whole freezer.' i just said 'yeah' and he went on talking to himself for the next 30 minutes.

What kills me is that someone over 18 could do somthing like that. That is somthing that would be unacceptable and childish if you were 12 or 13. The fact that you are over 18 and doing things like this, then bragging about it to a group of people would lead me to assume that you have some sort of SERIOUS social or psycological issue.

ok I have a great bum story. This one time in downtown seattle, I went to the union gospel mission and served basically all the homeless men in downtown. Yeah it was great. And you're an asshole whoever started this thread.

I'm sure there's more to his story than he's telling, but to get this thread back online...here's a couple of my stories.

I live in Northern California near San Francisco, so there are pretty much homeless people all over the place. I used to take the train to school and then walk the mile or so from the train station to my house to get home. On my way, I went through the downtown with alot of homeless people hanging around. I usually shy'd away from them but one day I'm walking down the street and a homeless guy with a rolled up newspaper is walking towards me. I'm trying not to make eye contact when he just walks up to me and starts beating me with his news paper. I'm like 14 at this time and scared shitless. I think I ran from there back to my house, but since then I've realized that homeless people are really interesting, even the crazy ones. I like to strike up conversations with them because they usually have some pretty cool stuff to say. I think I'm going to write a book on my conversations with homeless people.

Me and my friend hosted parties, sometimes these bums would show up wanting to party, and we let them in. Yeah, they're weird but hella fun to party with, and often have interesting stories to tell us about their life.

Years back, when I was freshman in MSOE @ Milwaukee I had to rollerblade from my apt to work and back everyday for 40 min after totalling my old car on freeway. :(

There was this 1 black Bum that always shacks up on the bus stop bench, after couple of weeks seeing him chilling there. I finally stopped by & asked him how did he end up being like that. Darrell said he used to be really successful once, he owned a business for few years until he was forced to file bankruptcy. Darrell gradually lost everything. The only thing he ever owned was a small RV, but a group of teenagers decided to break in & vandalize it, and ripped engine parts out just for kicks. He couldnt afford to fix it, and it was undriveable. The cops decided to impound it after seeing a fucked up RV sitting in same spot for 3 months @ ghetto neighborhood. He's been wandering on the street since '92. After we met, I made extra lunch for him and give it to him everyday on the way to work. It has been going on for 7 months, then I never saw him on the bench again. Darrell told me that he was so grateful that I brought him extra lunch, & sometimes leftover beer bottles from the party every weekdays cuz lot of people looked down at him and beat him up for no reasons. Sometimes I wondered what happened to him.

You know what you're right, I am an asshole for tossing his cart int the ocean. But if you read the whole story, he still had his stuff. I also said that upon coming across the cart I really didn't think much of it other than something to do, not, hey I bet this cart belongs to a homless person, lets fuck with him... It was late, me and my friend were wasted, at the beach, and shit happes when you're bored. I'm never inconsiderate towards homless people, I generally try to be generous when asked if I could spare some change, although it's a tough call sometimes, I'm never the one to say 'go get a job', the only reason I hit him with my board was because he was seriously going after my friend, and that area has a known drug problem... So what would you do to that extent? If he wanted HIS cart back all he had to do was follow the tracks, it was low tide, if he wanted a new on there's 3 grocery stores about 5 blocks from there. I probably shouldn't be writing such a long defense, but I get some people here don't like talking about there interactions with homless people, and more about ragging on a guy who was bored, made an apparent mistake, and was dumb enough to post it on NS, sorry to disappoint you JD, but what's done is done...

who gives a shit this homeless guy is obviously homeless for a reason, hes probably strung out on meth and he cant get his fucking life together, hopefully the friesz made him realize how pathetic it is to have all of your worldly possesions in a fucking shopping cart, and maybe this bum will now get his act together, people really shouldnt feel that sorry for bums, theyre just lazy asses who gave up on their lives, when they probably could put in some effort and get their lives back together, but they are bums so they dont

in bend, we have the ninja bum. he wheres all black tight tight sweat pants and sweater. a big long black trench coat. then he has the ninja sword on his back. its the casing for a sword and it has a handle but i doubt its a real sword. well being a teenager trying to get alcohol we found him at seven eleven and said he could keep our change if he bought us some beer. he didnt say anything at first. then i walk away and my friend asks again the bum then slapped him upside the head. and told us to get the fuck away. thats it.

I think a general trend in all these forums is that one person disagrees wholeheartedly and the next people who might disagree somewhat, or a some that probably wouldnt usually have an opinion to begin with, suddendly feel the urge to post in order to 'fit in.' ( can you say run on sentence.) I think the point is made after a few posts. And to say he should burn in hell and have a painful death... need I explain?

ANYWAY
So I was delivering Ice one day, as was my summer job two yrs ago in Calgary and I came upon a Liquour store. In front was a panhandler with a guitar, maybe not homeless, but of the sort nonetheless. He started to sing a song about ice delivery, coaxing me to drop some change. A panhandler in front of a liqour store? No change for you today. So after the first ice drop offs, I went back to the truck to get more. While in the truck, the wind blew and slammed the door shut. Normally, there is a release from the inside. It didnt work. 15 min in an ice truck in shorts and t-shirt is kinda cold. At least I could hear the guitar. Finally the door opens and it is the man with the guitar. Of course I thanked him, but considering the circumstances, thanks wasnt enough. So I dropped a few bucks and had a quick chat, and continued with stalking the Liquor stores freezer. For a while the guitar stopped. On my way out of the store, there sat the man. Of course you cant sing and play guitar when your you got a bottle in your hand. He won that round.

My question of crazy street bums is this:
Do you think most of them are on the streets because they are crazy, or are they crazy because they are on the streets? I think this would be an interesting study.

One time, when I was like 5, I was Paris with my perentals, and theres plenty of homless ppl there. I was a jolly and I had a couple of francs in my hand, and I accidently dropped them, and they rolled accross the street to a gutter thing right in front of a homeless woman, she looked so depressed, I felt really bad.
