and an example from myself:
we had some good family friends over for dinner when i was younger and just out of the blue i asked my parents if they thought homosexuality was a mental illness... turns out that the brother of the woman we had over was gay and died of aids a few weeks before...

...awkward

while undergoing a pysch eval for a job, i was stumbling through a test and said "man, it must be fun watching people struggle through this" which apparently meant that i would enjoy watching people struggle, went from the final candidate back to being jobless

haha my dad had an interview for a good job at IBM and when they asked ''do you work well in teams?'' he answered ''nah, i always end up doing all the work''

the other night i was at a party and saw this kid from the summer class im taking. he is asian. after we talked for like 5 minutes i looked over and said to my gf "oh look your friends are still playing dizzy bat" and she asked what friends i was talking about. i said "uhh the asian guy and some other people" and then the kid from my class just kind of turned away and started talking to someone else. i was really bummed. not like it was a mean thing to say but i have been trying not to differentiate people by their race and i felt ignorant after i said it


and last night i was really drunk and called my friend jill liz. but that was more funny and wierd than anything

I once called my ex girlfriend by her sisters name during drunk sex. Yeah, THAT was awkward. Never before have I witnessed such unbridled homicidal rage. The worst part is her sister is an ugly slunt and I hate her guts. I still have no idea why her name came out of my mouth.

A few weeks ago a senior at my high school died in a driving accident. It was very tragic and news of his passing traveled throughout the school. The next day we had an extended advisory to discuss the tragedy. For most of it, we sit in silence because my Advisory knew the kid really well and was at the verge of tears the entire time.
After fifteen minutes had passed, some unknowing freshman says, "So, did some die or something?"

When a liftie does their chairlift-helping job and says "have a nice ride!" and I reply " you too!" it's always sad because they're not riding the lift when I know they want to be.

basically this. when someone says something like "thank you!" or "see you later!" and by politeness instincts you say "you too!" then you wheel the fuck out of there because you realized you just totally messed that shit up.

Oh my, this brings up some bad memories

I was sitting in spanish class, and one of my friends said something about how he supports breast cancer. I thought it was funny to say something like "you support breast cancer? why would you ever do that? I can see you supporting breast cancer research, but supporting breast cancer? c'mon."

at which point the girl next to me started kinda punch-tapping me in the arm, which I thought was just like "breast cancer isn't cool, stop," but I didnt really process it that much, and figured I had just said that supporting research was good, so i continued, with:

"I mean, it's not like you go around saying, 'GO BREAST CANCER!'" At which point she full on elbowed me and said straight up, as serious as I have ever heard the girl, "Charlie, stop."

I knew something more was wrong with what I was saying, other than the obvious things.

Turns out that there was a girl in my class whose mother had died when the girl was only 2, of breast cancer. I felt really shitty for like 2 days, didnt talk to her, because I wanted to apologize, but not bring it up.

The worst part that I really liked the girl whose mother's death I pretty much made fun of. Probably didn't help my case.

I was in gym class. I was talking to a friend about a work we had to do the next day for another class. He said ''I'm sorry, I can't tomorrow I'm not in school''. I said ''oh fine if you want to take a day off it's cool'' He then said to me his grandpa had passed away and it was his funeral the next day. akward.

What's more akward? The class after, I told that story to one of my friends. ''He said it sucks, I'm also not coming to school tomorrow.'' I laughed and said ''don't tell me your grandpa died too haha.''

I should have shut the fuck up...

two seasons ago, I was getting on a lift, the liftie had the same bandana as me, as I sat down, he said "nice bandana." maybe it was because of the noise all around, I didn't say anything back. I realized right after he let go of the lift. I feel like a doosh. If youre reading this, liftie, sorry!!

when my brother still had his girlfriend, we kinda spent christmas at their place (my mom is a waiter and has to work on the 24th [in europe you get the presents on christmas eve]).

so in german-speaking areas, you wish others "frohe weihnachten" [pretty much "happy/joyful christmas"], nothing too fancy and easy to remember.

so the uncle of my brothers girlfriend is the first near the entrance and he wishes all of us "frohe weihnachten" and i just respond [while shaking his hand, so i really had his attention] "alles gute" (lit. "all the good things", which you only say as a birthday wish).

i know cool story bro and not that cool but it was kinda awkward.


just like saying "you too" when its not appropriate just because of a reflex. i bet people working at vacation agencies hear the "have a nice holiday" - "you too" thing A LOT.
