Blunt my edges

I m beginner newschooler and came to NS from the snowboarding.
On the snowboard i did jibs and spins...
So i came into the NS, and found strange thing
Everyone whio s jibbing on the skis gives me an advice - blunt my edges under the boots)
Is it necessary? Cause for now when i m doing the jib i feel some "braking" on the box.
Or it is the technical difficulties?
Will i lose the control on the snow if i will blunt my edges?

Dulling your edges underfoot is okay, but you don't need to. After a day of skiing rails your edges underfoot will be dull enough. If you're worried about performance outside of the park, continue to sharpen the tips and tails of your skis, but not underfoot.

my edges are so dull and rounded underfoot that i can sharpen the entire ski and still have no trouble or added friction on rails. i sharpened and waxed my own skis and took them to a shop to get the bindings re-adjusted and the tech said i did a great job :) (i know cool story but i was really pumped)

Don't dull them, they'll do that on their own. what i do is just not sharpen them under the boot, so then i can still carve niceley when its icey.

unfortunately i have salomons, so i no longer have edges under my feet. at least catching on boxes is no longer an issue.

I use a file to make a 45 degree bevel, then round it off. I would never hit a rail on a sharp pair of skis. Why risk it? Takes 15 min to file your edge off underfoot and then you never have to worry about catching an edge on a rail/wood/concrete/whatever.

I'm sure people wont agree with me but take it all off.

Edges are great for jumps but if you want to learn rails having sharp edges is a no no. It takes me around 40 min to do both skis, and is worth it. Worst kinda fall you can have is digging into a rail and slamming on the rail or on the ground.

Just skiing for a day wont do it, and not to mention that day will suck. Buy a file, put some gloves on and file away.

but i like jumps and i need the 2 ft of edge that hasnt come off yet.

It is not necessary but it is highly recommended!
Take a diamond file and grind away from toe to heel piece OR grip and rip it against a raiL!
You will not lose control because your points of contact are at your tip and tail...

Get a grinder and just grind it all of in 2 minutes. That's how the pro's do it.

Personally I just take a file and do it from toe to heel piece or something like that.

I detune a little in the tip and tails where the skis are on the snow (about 3 inches) and then underfoot when I get new skis. Only a little bit though, more underfoot than in the tips and tails. I think it's a good idea. Catching because of sharp edges on boxes or rails can end up with your skis or yourself damaged.

yup, just used a palm sander and kept moving it around underfoot at a 45 degree angle. keep doing it for a little bit until you get a nice rounded edge.

Why won t ski producers do something like 45 degree edge. It is cause of different positions of boots on the ski for different people?

because you can always dull your edges when you get them, you can buy a metal file at a hardware store cheap and make them 45 yourself. But, if someone buys that ski and doesn't want their edge dulled, they wouldn't be able to re-sharpen it.

idk what these people say im to lazy to read. but hey take it from me bro brah, take file or rough sandpaper on a block, and hold it at a 45 degree angle on the edge. go back wards and forth side to side while slowly moving down the ski. Then repeat process with a gumi stone or fine sand paper. do as much a you want. dont listen to kids who say underfoot only. especially with a center mounted ski. Odds are your gonna wash out anyway when you carve especially when your new to the sport so fuck having sharp edges unless your rarin to end up in a hospital or rip your bases off. Besides doesn't anyone like presses? sheesh. What also alot of people dont know is that wearing edges down for grinding actually drastically lengthens your time on the ski. sharp edges are more likely to snap or dent when coming into hard contact with rails etc. This can lead to base fractures and side wall cracks. Some one needs to capitalize on romes copper edges. That Idea is fucking fantastic, and if you dont think so, do some research. (other than the searchbar)

Plus vibes for the switch. I just started snowboarding i love it. carving just feels so much more natural. cant wait to shred some powder.

because snowboard companies are good at selling gimmicks to people. It's hard to make a snowboard ride so poorly that people won't buy it, not so with skis. Edges that come pre-rounded are a really bad idea. Not everyone wants that; i know I don't.

i make my edges round underfoot, all the way out to about 5" in front of the toepiece and behind the heelpiece for presses and scissoring. i lightly detune tips and tails so they dont catch if i surface swap, but they still carve.

id file them nice and round. it reduces teh risk of edge cracks and resulting edge pull-outs and you will not catch your edge on the rail when learning to jib. for carving, underfoot edge isnt that important since the cambered ski will touch the snow in the front and back, with sharp edges.

basically if you have sharp edges uunderfoot just take some sandpaper or sanding sponge and rub it on the edge under your boot. this will just take the sharpness out but not really remove material like a file does. rails will do that with time but to get started thays all you need

after a month of riding on ANY ski, i have zero edges undedrfoot, no metal left at all. so dont even worry about having no control, i ride in minnesota so im on ice all the time.

So i rounded my edges with sanding sponge - the ayre rounded but not as 45 degree as file`s made)
Did i do that cprrect?
