Official Canadian Federal Election Thread - May, 2011

So, after the government unveiled the 2011 federal budget today (the most nothing budget in at least a decade), it seems certain, if not official, that there will be an election as a result of the vote on friday. It'll take place on May 2 or May 9. Although I am guessing no one will have much to say yet, things always heat up as the campaign goes along so I thought I would make a thread.

Will there be a conservative majority? Who will you vote for (or who would you vote for if you could)? Will the current issues surrounding the budget form a jumping-off platform for election issues? I'm thinking not - there is simply nothing really in there to campaign on or against, aside from the elimination of the federal deficit by 2015. From where I sit, the issues at stake will develop over the next couple of weeks and we'll be talking about completely different things than now. Aside from contempt of Parliament which is a good election buzzword.

actually its laissez faire. and it Does work. its socialism that does'nt work. The reason you live in a nice house and can afford food, and a car and clothes and arent worried about aids is laissez faire.

i remember one time i was watching a round-table debate on c-span with harper and the high up reps from all the party's during re election.... pretty much the guy from Quebec tore harper ass with a razor blade. besides that i am not well versed in Canadian politics

Now about the election. I hate em all. I can't stand any of the parties. When I think about it, I honestly get really depressed cause I feel like there is absolutely nothing I can do to make this place better cause no matter who I vote for, some nut case is going to be running my country and making decisions that affect other peoples countries in ways I really wish they wouldn't. I hate the conservatives, I'm more of a liberal minded person, but I hate the liberal party, the NDP doesn't cut it either for me, and nor does the Green party. So I have no idea who I'd vote for. However, since I'll be deep in the woods tree planting during the election, I'm guessing I won't be voting anyways.

I'm just annoyed that when/if I ever become a Canadian citizen, I have to actually praise the fuckin QUEEN...

Eff that, yo. (So worth, it though, in the end... I'm starting to really lose faith in the USA...)

why post in this thread if you really don't care? I don't agree that your life wont change. maybe not in a way you would like but then AGAIN, if your not voting because you dont feel like it will make a difference, there is no logic in that.

ive never voted before. for the past year now ive been reading a bunch of newspapers and shit to try and make my own opinion and figure out who i would vote for and everything. ive never liked politics but now that im able to vote i feel as if its my duty as a citizen to learn about this shit and go vote ahaha

How is the Bloc even a party? A federal party only representing one province? bullshit. If there was a B.C., Alberta or Saskatchewan party emerging it would be shot down immediately.

I can make a 100% gurantee that harper will be P.M again. Right now he has like %46 support from Canadian Voters. That is more than eneough to keep him in power.

The whole reason why everyone is pissed off over this election is the total waste of tax payers money for the exact same outcome. Harper even holds a slim chance for getting a majority this time.

At this point in time I just want a majority government to form because over the last 10 years we have had 6 elections. All of the leaders are not very good. Jack Layton is my personal favorite but he is in the wrong party and wont go anywhere. Iggy and Harper are both door knobs except Iggy is a boring elitist prick. Have you ever read anything he has wrote? It is painful to get through.

While I traditionally have favored the Liberals my vote this time is going to the party who stands the best chance of a majority which I can guarantee is the conservatives. Hell this might be the first time that Layton actually leads as the opposition party.

Im going to vote for the bloc quebecois. I dont care if they havr no chance i just want them to have as much voice in parlament as possible. Or maybee vote liberal depending if quebecois has a chance or not. Liberal vote would be just to take away from the conservatives

2 students were kicked out of a Conservative rally by RCMP because on their Facebook they had a picture of themselves with Ignatieff.

not to be an asshat, but just based on this one incident alone you would honestly have to be retarded to vote for a party that blatantly kicks democracy in the balls like that.

^Please inform me which rights and freedoms are being violated by this action. Please first inform me how the actions of a political party in running a campaign can possibly engage Canadian rights and freedoms. It also appears it was some douchebag staffer who kicked them out and Harper is "personally apologizing" for the incident. This doesn't just seem trivial it IS trivial, manufactured outrage over bullshit that has no bearing on anything relevant to how this country is and should be run.

I thought you studied law? you of all people should see the weight of this. Having RCMP kick people out of a public event because they associated with the opposition in a picture on Facebook?

That's like passing a bill in parliament saying "immigrants should all be subject to extra taxes", then making sure all MP's of recent immigrant families are escorted out so they can't vote against it.

It's like kicking someone off a hockey team because they have pictures of them with a player of an opposing team.

It's like someone getting killed in Nazi Germany because they associated with Jews.


Common, you honestly see nothing wrong with that? Okay, you're not allowed on NS because you also have an account on TGR.


Oh, and what's the part of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms about guaranteeing the right to associate with whatever political party one chooses? Pretty sure that's a big part of it.

Now, someone getting part of their fundamental rights (that being political affiliation) shat on by a political party who is running the country has no relevance?

just think about it for a second.

what if you showed up to vote and you weren't allowed in to vote since you were known to have voted for the communist party in the past. How would you feel about that?

They want to cut 2 billion from the tar sands. Talk about a horrendous idea for our economy, we have the second largest reserves of oil next to Saudi Arabia and they want to cut 2 billion in funding from it? Crazy talk.

Oil is a finite reserve and will eventually run out. Sometime in the near future... putting this pipeline through to the coast will inevitably result in a spill within a year or two I guarantee you.

The Queen of the North Ferry ran aground and sank super close to the proposed route, except the ferry doesn't displace 70ft+ with it's hull like these super tankers.

The pipeline will be above ground, and Enbridge has had close to 2000+ spills both minor and major with their existing pipelines in the states.

BC's economy is based on illegal marijuana export, forestry, fishing and tourism. An oilspill here would devestate the fisheries and wildlife on the coast for a VERY LONG TIME. Perhaps to the point it wouldn't be able to recover.

I dunno, I grew up on the ocean and it would be horrible to destroy this one last wild place we haven't completely fucked up yet.

((Also, why the fuck should we be building a pipeline SOLELY FOR FOREIGN EXPORT? Fuck exporting the crude oil to China and buying it back at 10x the cost. We should be hoarding it and refining it outselves while we FOCUS on developing sustainable and renewable energy.))
