Ok ppl, i know poaching is highly frowned upon, but does anyone do it? do any of you ppl poach and of the summer camps? what the the consequences, if u get caught? can they gank yer pass? share yer poaching experiences here.

Yup^ Ace is right. When you just go into other camps and ski there features. not necessarily all day, but like just take a lap or two. i wanna do it, but feel bad b/c all the other ppl payed. has anyone ever like, bribed a coach to let them ski fer an hour or two? like said 'here is 15$ if u let me session this rail with you'

i poach pow at resorts i have a day ticket to. i found a couple spots at winter park but i only poach them every once in a while

in order to be a truly well-rounded skier, you must poach at least once, AT LEAST. skiing wouldn't be skiing without poaching. it would be like going to school without ever skipping.

perhaps the best poaching i have ever seen was done by charlie (i dont know his last name) from whistler at the grouse flow comp. All the big snowboard companies were there having a team contest for money and boosting off the hips, and charlie dropped in there and aired a 3 saftey that was easily 7 feet higher than any of the boarders went (including chris brown).

Poaching is just plain wrong. Say what you will, but you are putting the camp in jeapordy on a liablity level if you get yourself hurt on their terrain. Go and ask Shane or John or Ken how they feel about it. They pay through the NOSE for liability insurance (I know, I made them pay it for 4 years), and if you get hurt, and are not a part of their camp, you are going to land them in a world of hurt with legal fees and insurance premiums. You are also going to inspire the fine folks in Risk Management at Whistler to ensure that all camps are hard-fenced and that the camps can garuntee that only their campers are inside. That would lead to higer costs for the camps and higher rates for the campers.

In this case, poaching VERY much puts the onus on the camps that are progessing your sport, not the resort which you may or may not feel has the money to deal with it.

And I don't even work for the resort anymore.

if you go to COC, high north has a different off day, so head over there while they're off and hit all their features. Last summer I went over to high north on their off day and hit all their features. Or if your coach is tight with other camp coaches you guys can go over to tha camp with your coach if you ask him, he wil most likely go over with you guys and hang out.

if you consider this poaching, me and a couple buddies hiked up killngton around 1 in the morning piss drunk and skied down the great eastern which is a 14 mile trail and we had to dodge the groomers and snowmoibles. pretty fun time.

seems like it would be prety easy, some snowboarder poached high north the other day and ran into shane, he didn't get into trouble i think, but i think it's prety stupid since other people work hard to pay for camp and other just sneak in

me and my friends poached a trail after a foot of snow that was closed and we came up the lift to do it again and ppl got screwed for it and we got away with it...hahah

Like you have control over that kind of thing? That's why they call them 'accidental injures' and not 'intentional injuries'. Accidents close terrain parks. Last summer and fall, everyone on here was complaining about the high school kid who hurt himself in the Terrain park on Whistler a few winters ago, and the lawsuit that came from it. Feel what you will about that, but the fact is, that has changed the face of Terrain Parks in North America, especially in Canada. The risk managemnt world is a small one, as is the ski resort industry.

How would you like to be the dink that poaches someplace, hurts yourself, and makes insurance premiums too high for areas or camps to have and operate a park? Not much at all, would you?

360spins....quit being such an uptight asshole. if the fucking price of the camps werent't astronomically high, poaching would no longer be an issue. if the price was lowered, more people could afford to attend camps, making more than enough money for this so called 'liability insurance' and poaching would become obsolete. quit bitching.

^ Twoplanker, but its things like Liability insurance that drive the costs up. I'm sure Shane and any other camp manager would love to lower the price and get more kids, but they most likely can't because of insurance and stuff. Kind of a catch 22.

^^Two planker, you clearly have no idea how the world works. Get bent. I'm not being an uptight asshole, but I have sat in meetings with the Whistler Terrain Park Managers, the Safety Managers, and our Lawyer to discuss where the world is going in terms of parks and liability. I have a pretty good understanding of what the issues are and why camps rates are what they are.

I just got back from 3 days of poaching windells, only got asked to leave once, guy came up and said 'hey are you a camper or guest?' i said 'im just poaching' he said 'well you should probably leave, i could take your pass but you're bein nice about' so i left for the day but was right back poaching again the next day

^ i kno what u mean 360spine but with all this legal bullshit really comes down to nothing when ur skiing, i mean its just legal bullshit, u cant tell me ur constantly thinking of how u affect the law while u ski. i call for the separation of ski and state because i have seen that the law only ruins what i believe to be fun

Poaching at Alta can be sketch, I know a few who have gotten there pass ripped for two weeks. I've done it a few times, especially the last day of the season, it was a semi good powder day, everyone was doing it. But poaching some stuff isn't a great idea, I give no props for starting avalanches and killing others...

when i was at high north a couple years ago we nailed a poacher with like 100 snowballs righ after he jibbed one of the rails. it was pretty outrageous

^^Well Sid, when I am sitting in front of my computer debating these things with folks that clearly do not care about the future of their sport, and when I am sitting in rooms where I am a part of the decision making process of the future of our sport, and when I am planning my day out before I leave my house in the morning, yeah, I do take things like that into consideration as a matter of fact.

Why don't you? Of course legal stuff 'is no fun'. Leagal stuff and Liability stuff is boring as shit. You should see the contracts that all the camp owners have to sign. I've read them - have you? No. The fact is, this part of the world runs a certain way - and there are causes and effects that influence things. This is what I am pointing out. For the past 4 years, I have been the guy that put every camp on the glacier, and have been the guy that told Shane and John and everyone else how much their insurance had to be, and I am one of the guys that worked with WB's lawyers to try to patch things up from the last time this sort of thing happended. So lets just say I have a certain perspective that you don't and leave it at that, K?

If you are going to Poach, whatever - all I am saying is that there are consequences to what you are doing, like it or not. Sure, 99.99% of the time - zero issue, other than you are using for free what a bunch of guys are paying lots of money for, which makes you a bit of a skid in my eyes, but whatever, that is another issue. That other one time in a thousand though, when you or someone else gets hurt while you are poaching WILL have ramifications that you and everyone else on here will not like.

Ok, I don't have a dick or a brick up my ass (although thanks for providing words that rhyme).

Just to be clear, all I am doing is sharing some perspective on consequences that you might not have thought of or realize. The issue that I am talking about is what happens when someone who is not registered in a camp, and therefore not covered under their mandatory 3rd party liability insurance hurts themselves in camp terrain.

That sort of situation - like it or not - leads to lawsuits, raised insurance premiums and therefore higher costs to the campers, and the possibility that resort insurers will not cover parks, and therefore NO PARK at your hill. Does anyone here know what happened in the 70s with Freestyle Skiing? Anyone remember when resorts didn't let you jump AT ALL? We have come a long way since then, and it would be a shame to see all of that ruined.

This has come very close to happening again already, and all I am doing is suggesting that you think about things from a broader perspective before you do whatever you feel like doing. Is that so bad?
