Skiing with mouth guard

the other day i was spinning a jump, spun it a few times before fine but one time i came up short, took a knee to the chin, chipped a few teeth, cut up my chin, bit part way through my tongue, spit out blood for an hour. I was wondering if anyone skies with a mouth guard? im thinking about it but im not sure if it will do much if i ever eat my knee again.

i played qb for 10 years so im used to talking/drinking/exercising with it in. But i only wear it when i am pushing myself and have a good likelyhood of violently blowing up.

just mold it correctly, or get your dentist to hook it up with a custom one. you will forget you are wearing it as soon as your mouth warms it up on the mtn

in hockey I always used shock doctors. just take the mouth guard, put it in boiling water for 30 seconds, then bite on it for a few minutes and it will be molded good to your mouth.
I would start out with something like this http://www.shockdoctor.com/product/gel-max-mouthguard.aspx
and find out if you will actually use it or if you chew through it fast.
I dont use one skiing but i think I am going to throw one in my coat for trying new tricks.

If you have decent dental insurance, they may cover a proper one.

I used to ski with one... need to get a new one.

I've got two very chipped front teeth, and both my eye teeth chipped... Trying to keep the composite there as long as possible.

I did the same thing pretty much last friday except i had to go to the hospital because i loosened 4 of my teeth.  When my teeth get better enough that i can actually bite with my front teeth i am going to buy one right away because apperently this happens often according to my dentist.

thanks for all the help! keep it comin. a custom mouth guard by my dentist sounds expensive, prolly gonna do a shock docker one and boil it.

When I'm huckin cliffs or skiing gnarly terrain, I wear a super thin custom one. It's really comfortable and I can talk fine with it in. I would def recommend wearing one

yeah man I wear one when trying new\tough tricks, I find it gives me some confidence and espeecially after busting up your teeth you might want a confidence booster

im also considering using one cuz i got kicked in the face during soccer and now i am super nervous about trying new stuck mainly involving landing switch. jst make sure u mold it right cuz i used to have one for goalie (league rule) and it didnt fit right and it was so uncomfortable.

I can't think of the prooooo or the edit that he was in, but there one from a vid not too long ago and he was poking humor about how much more courage wearing a mouthguard will give you to try stupid shit.

I'll post if I can find. My biggest fear is taking a rail to the mouth.

mouth guards are a good idea. they lessen the chance of conciouses (sp.) as well. i keep getting a new one every season, but i keep forgetting it, and lossing it.

I ski with one when I'm taking an extra difficult lap.  I bit through my lip a few weeks ago and the fitted mouth guard is an easy addition to my pocket so I can whip it out when I need it to feel safe.  Highly recommended.

forgot to add, the shock doctors can be a little long in the back sometimes so before you boil it, stick it in you mouth and see it it goes back past your teeth, if it does, just cut it down and then boil it.

shock doctor makes a really good one at a reasonable price. i have one for hockey and one for skicross racing.

mouth guards in skiing are more for protecting from a concussion than keeping your teeth in check but it'll still help

i did the exact same thing. i got a shock doctor gravity mouth guard. fits on the bottom teeth, real low profile. i dont really notice it. if anything it makes me feel safer

i've been told that mouth guards prevent like 90% of concussions. a few friends of mine wear one, I've been thinking of joining them.

not at all, just pinch it between your thumb and pole in the lift line and just put it in at the top of the park. ive had enough concusions at this point that even if it was a pain in the ass its still worth it to have a properly functioning brain.

I'd think it would be annoying to talk with it.  Not like football where you know everyone has a mouthgaurd so that's why they are talking like that.  People will be like wow that kid talks like a retard.

i always ski with a mouthguard, especially when learning new tricks. get a custom fitted one from the dentist, definitely worth the extra money. you dont even notice it it fits so well, many times i have forgotten i was wearing it and halfway through the car ride home a friend will point it out to me

I dont wear one skiing, but I actually questioned it this year.. I might throw mine in my jacket. If you get it from the dentist it is an incredible fit, mine was only 40 bucks and you get wahtever colors you want.. Definitely worth it

If u go to your dentist and ask for a special molded mouthguard they can make really good ones that are clear and u talk normally with. Its like a retainer. So much more confidence with it in!

I dont ski with one, but my brother always bites his tounge on falls, so he takes it out if hes trying something new/diffiicult. doesn't seem to be much of a hassle.

kids do it all the time. lots of pros do it.. esp in the pipe.. my friend knocked his teeth out skiing and now he has like dentures for his 2 front teeth. if you wanna wear one you should wear one.. dont let "style" get in your way..

but you should always wear a helmet.. no joke

My dads a dentist so I've had many custom mouth guards throughout the years.

Since skiing is more for enjoyment I wouldn't recommend getting a store bought one as no matter how much you heat it up and try to mold it, it still wont be that comfortable. Definitely go to your dentist and see if you can get a deal on one. If you're on a sports team tell him/her you'll try to get some teammates to come in and get some from him/her.

There is a huge difference between custom ones and store bought ones. Custom ones are literally molded to your teeth. And you can get different thicknesses instead of just having to get a bulky one you can barely talk with.

i bit through my tongue after kneeing myself in the face last year real gnar on a BC jump, went to Walmart right after and picked up a $3 mouthguard and its done me wonders! boosts your confidence like no other, and no more teeth through the tongue!
