Direct Uploading help (not GoPro)

Alright, so I have a Sony and it's avchd. I've been uploading all my clips onto Imovie in 1920x1080. After they all upload, I then open them on Final cut Express. I've lost some major quality and I've heard uploading to Imovie could be the problem. Is there anyway I could do a direct upload to FCE or another program?

Thanks, will my videos upload quicker onto FCE than Imovie?

I just tried using log and transfer and after importing 3 clips it "shutdown unexpectedly" These were short 20-30 second clips...
