Converting mts. files?

Hey, I have been editing mts. files from my panasonic tm700 for a while with much pain. But apparently converting them to mpg before hand is standard? I tried to download mpegstream clip but it would not recognize them. Does anyone know of a free program to convert the mts. files to a usable format that still holds the 60p and the quality? Or any other suggestions?

hmm i know adobe premier and fcp can encode the mts files for you i dunno about vegas though

avchd is such a pain to edit. the playback is so jumpy, will this get fixed if i get a faster computer or FCP? And I always here you say "editing raw avchd is just dumb" care to explain? If i convert it into mpeg will it have smooth playback but still retain its quality?

It might but it wouldn't be worth it. raw avchd is fragile and like you just said is a pain to edit.

So whats the best way to handle it (the glitchy playback)? when you edit avchd is it jumpy playback? Is getting a faster computer a solution?

The solution is to encode your footage, aka turn it into a different type of movie file that is more friendly for your computer.

I edit avchd fine with cs5. Just steal it. Never had a problem with crashing or jumpy scrubbing like everyone says
