not really that surprising? you made it sound like he had it on him during the new body screening and not the luggage checker which we've had in airports for god knows how many years.

still, it was carry on, and you would think that a gun left there accidentally would be easier to see than an intentionally hidden or disguised weapon. I've seen them take a belt buckle shaped like a gun when i was at an airport one time
