East coast vs West coast

Yes the western US has big open resorts with good snow, and they are producing some good talent, and the east, with ice landings, almost all man made snow, not nearly as progressive parks.

Although west has the fame, anybody notice that most of the future talent that we know of are coming from the east coast.

For instance fromt he east we have:

Tom Wallisch (Pennsylvania)
Phil Casabon (Quebec)
JF Houle (Quebe)
JP Auclair (Quebec)
Dale Talkington (Vermont)
Clayton Vila (New Hampshire)
Sean Jordan (New Hampshire)
Nick Martini (New Hampshire)
And more

I know there are many talented young skiiers from the west too, but when you look at the setup and conditions in the east these guys made the best of it and look at where they are now.

Yeah, people from the PNW should move east!  That's the way to really get good!

If I were mentioning great east skiers, I would mention guys like Scott Gaffney, or Hugo Harrison.  I believe Chris Davenport is from there too.  Mention guys who can rip a mountain to pieces, and you will have a better argument.

Guys from the east can definitely be great skiers, I just think more of the really dominant guys are from the west.  The east coast probably does produce better park skiers, but more of the big mountain guys are from the west.

For the record I grew up in the east, I'm just honest enough to see the truth.  I can say that the skiers at Squaw and Mammoth are much better than the skiers at any of the eastern resorts.

^ yea so true. West has better access to terrain thats why. Basically east coast skiers just lap park all day then one day move to the west coast and blow up because they had to deal with shit conditions there whole life and now have it good.

Bingo. Also, West coast has some of the best park skiers in the game. Ever heard of alex schlopy? Bobby brown? Joss christenson (sp)? Pep used to destroy the park scene back in the day. Most of the west coast big mountain slayers slayed park at one point in their life.

Even if all the west coasters are saying they're better "skiers" when many of the east coast kids don't have real oppurtunities to ski real big mountains. Which is why I feel fortunate to have been out west to ski bigger mountain stuff ie. Jackson hole, Alta, snowbird, Brighton, steamboat

I kinda feel it's more like east coast kids are super driven when they get out west to make edits/compete/ get their name out there..that's why they kinda "blow up" i guess

I've come across sooo many kids from the westcoast since i've moved out here that kill is just as hard as kids from the east but just don't give a fuck cuz they grew up in teh mountains hitting massive tables and cliffs and lines..soo many kids out here just like to do their thing and aren't worried about publishing themselves as much as kids back east

Clearly the west is going to produce better big mountain skiiers, possibly because all the mountains in the east are small and all below the tree line. But when you look at the east coast parks and how they dont even compare to west coast you gotta give it to the east coast guys for park not all mountain because park is what they learned on cause they dont have any big mountain.

obviously. we believe you that the west has better mountains. anybody who has skied out there knows it. the east spawns a bunch of dumb jibbers who literally do not know how to ski down a groomer. we have some fun spots and some good mountains but compare those to squaw and it's a fucking joke. i've gotta get the fuck out of the east asap. hopefully i get into school out west

I feel like in the west there is such good snow that most people split their time between powder and park, because both are fun as fuck. As where in the east, there is no pow so all the kids are park rats and that is what they do. So the east puts out kids who can kill rails and jumps at a higher quantity than the west because some of the kids on the west coast become pow skiers. Idk, nasty skiers are nasty skiers no matter where they come from.

problem with east coast park rats is that they never learn how to actually ski. you have guys out west who kill it in the park but also know how to ski big mountain or at least carve down a groomer. i have never seen a jibber kid at mt snow or any east coast mountain actually ski down a groomer, they just slide around with their feet stuck together and wiggle their asses

i ski on the east all the time. i never said no park rats know how to ski, i'm just saying i've never seen one who does. it's not an assumption if its based off experience. i'm sure some of you guys know how to ski, never said you didn't, i just don't ever see that. i see kids who try to look steezy while skiing from the park to the lift

I see the complete opposite. I see so many park rats that slay the fuck out of trails. The east coast park rat is such a myth. Sure there are a handful that can't ski for shit, but the majority of the one I see are shred hard.

let me simplify this for you...

everything you tried to explain about the east, pretty much happens on the west as well. Every resort has its share of "poser park rats", as most people who have shredded east and west, will know.

Sorry for not being so blunt about it, thought you would figure it out.

so we are saying the exact same thing here yet you're still arguing with me? i only see this on the east. when i go out west i don't see it as much because i don't ski park ever. i don't even know where the park is at squaw. obviously it happens everywhere, but i think there's a higher percentage of kids in the east who ski park from day 1 because there's nothing else to do

Thats what happens when you get used to skiing larger sized mountains. Ive been living here for almost 3 years since I moved from michigan. I can honestly say that growing up skiing midwest/great lakes region hills has helped me ski some super fun steep runs.

East cost riders are good at park because its all they can do. West coast riders have the opportunity to concentrate on all aspects so there progression is slower.

Big fish in small pond theory on the east. Way easier to get noticed at certain places. I'd say just about all of those easterner transplant pros blew up on the east coast, then at their peak, moved out west with a pretty solid rep. From that point they were offered crazy unique opportunities once out west and because of that were able to progress their skiing to the crazy point that it is today.

Going somewhere with skiing is all about timing, knowing the right people, luck, and in some people's cases, lots of money and very a supportive family. Unless you're getting EVERYTHING for free and you've got some really supportive sponsors, being able to ski all day every day, travel around the globe, and compete everywhere costs a lot of money.

You can argue all you want...but throwing down out west is fitting in. Throwing down on the east will usually get you noticed, locally, if anything.

I like east coast kids, they are fun to talk to when riding up the chair. Always so stoked on the snow conditions, even on the days that suck and I'm bored. They do those flat land jib things, and spin tricks off tiny bumps. I know I would eat shit if I tried. It's fun to watch. They don't get into the good terrain or ski any of my lines, so they aren't a problem, unless they are standing on my tails in the lift line.

Jay peak, tuckermans revine. Imo the only east coast taste of the west. Tuckermans is heavy , choppy and sketch As fuck but thered barley any trees. Jay peak after a dump is epic. Beaver pond glades????! Open bc is nice and scenic above tree lines but the real danger and thrill for me is in the trees at jay. So much damn snow there. Obv doesnt compare to west amounts but tht place up until a year ago was hidden and always empty and now its gettun big cuz ppl r realizing tht the best snow in vt as well as the best priced for what ur gettin jay peak all the way
