In search of a dog

I right now currently am in search for a dog , and i need a little help on betting more infro on breeds and help with choosing a dog . here are the categories of dogs that i want .

- Medium to large sized . no bigger than a pitbull .
- tough dog . a dog that is not weak , and can handle being roughed around .
- looks tough . i want a dog that when people see it , they will be scared of it .
- Active . i want a dog that is pretty active around the house , and likes to have fun but at the same time will be calm , collective , and will lay down with you and likes to be pet .
- can take cold weather . winters get pretty cold in CT so walking the dog in the morning woulnt be a problem .

also , if you have a dog , post a picture of it for fun so we can see how it looks and describe the dog a little .

great call. i love my aussie. they're super fun and playful and ridiculously smart. i can't speak for all of them, but even though they look cute and cuddly, mine is super intimidating if you're on the other side of a fence, door, etc. he's super protective of his space and makes a hell of a lot of noise if he's not happy about where you are.

oh, and they don't mind the cold

Malamute. My friend has one that loves rough play, can be intimidating but is really friendly, and malamutes obviously love cold weather. Yes they are big, but they're a great breed.

okay i shoudnt have said dont get any of them. with any breed it comes down to the dog. there are nice dogs in every breed and shitty dogs in every breed. from personal experience there are a lot of nice rottweilers i shouldve excluded them from that comment.

alright fuck reading the OP again i fucked up. disregard the part where i said dont get any of the dogs you are considering. from what i understand shiba inu's can be very ill behaved though. i have no personal experience with a thai ridgeback but rhodesian ridgebacks are definitely a cool dog.

i stand by my reccomendations though. also i personally wouldnt get a husky because they require huge amounts of attention and exercise and if you dont give them that they will go mental and fuck shit up inside your house. malamutes are pretty similar.

whatever you do get your dog trained. yes it can be expensive but its worth it.

dude get a rottweiler(sp?) ive had one for about 10 years and she is the sickest dog ever. shes super nice but i can still rough around with her. best dog ever!

Another thing to think about.. most (or maybe just some) homeowners insurance will stop covering you/won't cover you if you own a rottweiler. Same goes for pitbulls, chows, and akitas.

But, if I were you, I would choose a great dane. Or something with great dane in it. They aren't aggressive at all, until they absolutely need to be, and then they go into full attack mode. Also, like someone else said, go get a dog from a shelter. You can find a dog with a mix of what you want, and it will also (most likely) be healthier AND cheaper. Plus, you're saving a dog. I mean who can say no to that.

i agree with the people saying shelter dogs. my mom manages one and its really hard to adopt out the dogs. even really nice ones are hard to get rid of so definitely save a shelter dog.

and if i were you i wouldnt go out looking for a certain kind of dog. make a little list in your head of dogs you might like and look at all the different ones and choose the one with the personality you like best

i agree 100% with people who say get them from a shelter . if i could , i would . thing is though i am looking for a pup , and in CT its hard to find the ones im looking for in a shelter . i absolutely am for saving a dog but getting a grown one wouldnt cut it , as for i have a cat , and i need to raise the cat with the dog , so they can both get used to each other . feel me on that ? i would love a malamute but i dont have much of a hard to satisfy his needs .

i take care of our neighbor's dog for weeks at a time, probably 1/4 of the year and honestly rottweilers are the coolest dogs i am yet to come in contact with

i love rotts . but yea . the shiba is not a big dog but my mom loves it . thats why i put it in there . i feel as if its a feminine dog but its w.e

shiba inu's are pretty small, just remember to check out health problems. Great danes are suseptable to twisted intestines so feeding and exercise have to be monitored. german shepherds tend to have a lot of hip problems etc etc.
but definitely check out shelters.

ps. rotties and pitts etc. it just depends on how you train them.

my dogs fits everyone of your criteria except the intimidating look, shes a german shepard - chow mix and is the most loyal, playfull and still calm dog i have ever had, but if your getting a dog adopt one from the pound, mutts are always cooler and your probably saving one from euthanasia.

i recommend the following

rottweiler (make sure you start training right away or its already well trained)
black lab
german shepherd
Basset hound
rhodesian ridge back
golden retriever

do not get a chocolate lab. i have never heard of a well behaved one. and no matter what dog you get get training.

i have a black lab and a german shepherd

my lab is really really friendly and he loves water and snow. it was great because when we got him he had never seen snow and winter rolled around and we got like 3 feet of snow and he loved it

Dude, I have a siberian husky-some other breed mut and she is the most sweet, timid dog you will ever meet. But when it's time to have fun, she's ready! They're great dogs!

i don't know a thing about dogs so i can't really help you. but my room mate had a boxer and while he was a little suck, he was very active.
when he saw him playing soccer he would bust out of the garage and run across the street to play, some how. very active, has a loud bark and looks like of intimidating. but he was also a dog that would come snuggle up to you on the couch. great dog.

Seriously. GO TO A SHELTER. Purchasing a dog is fucking crazy with so many out there homeless. With some patience you'll get an amazing friend and save a life.

Left: Border collie/terrier mix (he's the most amazing dog ever, seriously.)
Middle: Red Heeler/something mix (not sure what he's mixed with, but he's shy and takes a while to warm up to new people)
Right: Some sort of mix, I've given up trying to figure out what. (she's amazingly sweet, despite looking badass)

^and not to mention he can jump over a 6ft fence and hes only 30lbs right now, should grow to about 55lbs. very agile dog, incredibly smart, loves to play, and they are extremely protective over their owners so he makes a pretty good guard dog. hands down best dog ever.

huskys are so sick...my buddy has one and its a real fun dog..they do seem hard to train and he is quite the playful biter. They are real cute dogs as pups. i want one myself!

This! Blue Heeler (aka Australian Cattle Dog)

Absolutely the toughest dog ever. Designed to push around 800lbs steers on the Aussie outback and they weigh only 45lbs. So tough. Really smart.... almost too smart. I've had mine for a couple of years and he loves, VT and winter, and is exceptionally loyal. You have to work with them and they will always listen to their one master. They were bred to nip the heels of steers so thats something you need to teach them not to do with people. But they learn, like I said really smart.

Here is Wilson on my Dad's sailboat. This dog is amazing he will chill when you want him to chill, but he will take as much exercise as you give him. I don't have any BC skiing pics on my work computer, but Wilson loves it when we go BC touring. Well he also loves when we go Phish Touring too!

There are three colors, the blue, the red, and then the tri color which is both blue and red combined like Wilson. The Blue is actually black whites and greys that shimmer and kind of look blue.

Here is a really good rescue organization for the Cattle Dog, they'll help you find one for you and then bring him up to CT for you.

love it! i wish my dog would learn to play frisbee, hes still pretty young (8 months) and will go fetch but wont always bring it back. how did you work him into catching the frisbee in the air like that? how long did it take him to learn to fetch and bring it back to you?

I always play fetch after letting the dog know that I have a pocket full of treats, and you can change the "value" of the treats by using something he doesn't usually get, or something way better or meatier then his normal treats. My dog school lady, suggested string cheese. Either way once the dog knows you have treats you can work the "bring it" command and "drop it". To get him to jump for the frisbee you got to learn his speed vs the frisbee speed and then time it. Throwing a slight curve that is out in front of him and curls back towards him lets him keep his eye on the disc the whole time and then when he's close he just sends it! I've gotten some serious cheers from crowds at parties and parks. Its all Wilson's doing!
