I hear way to many flipping out about obama and other politicians agreeing to a mosque near ground zero, well here is the deal

I, personally, think its like a slap in the face, its disrespectful to put a mosque there. i live in NY and this whole terrorist situation has been lingering in the air since 9/11...


But on paper... on paper, it looks TERRIBLE to deny these people a mosque... just because they are muslim, doesnt mean they dont get the freedoms that the US grants them.

i think a mosque is a terrible idea, but i hate all these ignorant people flipping out at obama and local politicians for supporting it
because, in reality, they have to....

This is not the Dome on the Rock here guys... and this isnt the Muslim empire that was in power 500 years ago... the building's already been there for probably 40 years downtown, and it's 2 blocks away from ground zero not on it or even across the street from the place... All it is going to be is a community centre that just so happens to include a small (and by small, i do not mean BIG) mosque inside as a place for worship...

Big. Fucking. Deal, folks.

There has been a mosque 2 blocks away from this site for a very long time and no one is saying shit about that!
You cant even see this building from the WTC site.
There are no airplane parts still in/on the building. Yes they found part of the landing gear on the building after 9/11, but they found parts of the planes and the WTC on almost every building in a 5 block radius.
The Mosque portion of this project is on one floor. as a few people mentioned there will be a swimming pool, basketball courts etc... guess what? open to the public.
People in here have said that there are other churches in the area that havent been rebuilt because they havent been approved?? They havent been rebuilt because they dont have funding to be rebuilt. They have requested funding from the NYC and NYS and coming from someone who works in the development business that shit takes forever. Not to mention it all involves the POrt Authority which is a complete administrative shit show.
This site is being funded privately. And keep in mind that due to freedom of information laws you will be able to look up where every penny of funding came from. So do you really think that they would be stupid enough to accept funds from someone who has ties to terrorism?
want to look up how any building or development site in NYC was financed? just go to the NYC dept of finance website and use the "ACRIS" system. type in the block & lot # and you can find everything.

You obviously don't understand the connotations of the name "Cordoba." The original Cordoba Mosque was built in celebration of the Islamic conquest of Spain. Seriously, research a little.

But, fine, I'll play by your rules. American Center at My Lai. Building anything "American" at My Lai would be a dick move. Especially 9 years after the massacre and ESPECIALLY if we proposed to open it on March 16th.

Remember, I'm not debating their right to build there. Anyone who has read the Constitution knows they can. I'm debating whether it's the right thing to do, and if you look at polls, a majority of Americans agree with me. The fact that the Cordoba House organizers keep plowing ahead claiming an attempt to "mend bridges, build tolerance" even though this is obviously doing the opposite should show their true intentions.

I am not opposed to it for the fact that it is a mosque. In my opinion the only kind of building that should be built on ground zero is a memorial to commemorate all of the people that were killed in the attack

That IS THE REASON! the reason is those buildings were fucking blown up by muslim extremists. that's the fucking reason. there doesn't need to be another reason. it's one big fucking slap in the face to all those people who died from that terrible event.


And yes, i don't give a fuck that they are muslim. if they were jewish or christian, i would just as vehemently be against building a synagogue or a church as i am against the building of the mosque.

Honestly, i have a feeling most people who are supporting this are not from the tri-state area. if you were you would understand why so many people are against. My father was 3 blocks away when the second plane hit and barely made it out alive. he was one of the lucky ones.

well you better get out there with your picket signs. you have a lot of work to do. there are hundreds, yes hundreds, of synagogues and churches in lower Manhattan. And more are going to be built/rebuilt in the next few years.

now i agree that it is their right to build it anywhere they want, and they should be, however, to be honest i dont think it is the right thing to do, it really feels like they are starting shit and not taking the hint from the massive amount of unrest from the whole situation.

i dont know how correct any of these numbers are, but if there is a rate of 60% opposed to the construction of the mosque, what is to say that this particular mosque isnt going to become a target for prejudice based attacks by those ignorant, uneducated, racist, insulted people, that of the 60% are willing to take action.

in my opinion it is not a smart move for the people trying to build this mosque, i honestly have a tough time believing that there will not be some sort of action taken against the building and the people who will be worshiping at the mosque

What about those who died in the attacks who were Muslim?

They were attacking Americans. Not just Christians or Jews. If they wanted to do that, they would have attacked some closer targets in my opinion...

They were attacking our right to freedom of speech. our right to freedom of religion. Our right to govern ourselves, and our right to not be held under the tyranny of a seriously oppressive governmental regime.

They were attacking our basic rights... By telling some group who's absolutely not unassociated with the attacks in any way, that they should not be building a mosque in lower Manhattan, we might as well just rescind that freedom to everyone and let the Taliban run America...

Mecca is not off limits to non-muslims dude... It's basically just like what the Vatican is to the Catholics, but without a state run council.

You can go there all you want as long as you get a visa to enter Saudi Arabia...

I have a lot of family and friends in New York. In Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn... all of it mostly.

Everyone I've talked to has the same thoughts as I do, and have told me that those saying New Yorkers are all against this thing are totally blowing it out of proportion, and most people from that area don't really see the big deal - they just are not as outspoken...

I mean.. I dont know how true that is, but really if all new yorkers were against this thing en masse? Knowing how that city is, there would be a bit more unrest I'd imagine.

of the 3,000 or so that died in the twin towers, a couple dozen were muslim. The figure is debated but it could be barely 50. If muslims had attacked Pearl Harbor and not the Japanese would you still want to let a mosque be constructed at Pearl Harbor. No way in hell because it's insensitive. This is a free country and though they may have a legal right to build a mosque anywhere they want, that doesn't mean that they should.

I'm kinda confused. I just found out there is another Mosque, already standing, like... 3-4 blocks away from where this center would be. Couldn't they possibly renovate that one and put the Center there too? It's like Spokane, WA almost. There is a Catholic Church, Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, and Protestant church all within like a 5 block radius of each other.

Besides. Didnt everyone see how stupid it was to intern all those japanese americans during world war 2? Didnt we learn how horrible that was to do that?

This is right up there with that... People who had nothing to do with the attack, and were american were taken away and put into concentration camps in the mountains and left to freeze their asses off... their land seized and their businesses shut down.

This is less drastic, of course... but it's the same stupid knee-jerk mentality.

I believe the Japanese Royal family asked the US Government and the Hawaiian locals if they could build it as something of an apology and when the community DIDN'T want it RIGHT NEXT to Pearl Harbor they listened and moved.

i'm talking about the japanese. I honestly don't give a shit about this topic. I don't think it should be there, that's my un-educated opinion. All i'm saying is yea we treated the japanese-americans horrible during/after the pearl harbor period but we definitely compensated. What was it? $20,000 a person? Of course money doesn't make up for unfair treatment but as fair as i'm concerned that's water under the bridge.

if we're talking about whether it's right or wrong to hold people during war time because of their race. There were many cases of "german-americans" getting jobs at factories where they sabotaged the shit out of them. Though during the time it was almost impossible to catch them in the act since they'd just throw a handful of bolts into machines when no one was looking and a few minutes later the thing would be wrecked. Not all germans were bad but those on the extremists on the fringe were and at the time production of war resources was most important.

No I haven't been to Pearl Harbor but if what someone just posted about it being an apology of sorts is true, that situation sounds much better and is completely opposite of this current idea.
