I'm posting this to let you all know for those of you who havent yet, buy a UV Lens Filter. Even for $8-10 bucks they're so worth it. Yes I'll admit that the $8-10 dollar ones don't really filter much but I dropped my Nikon D40 today, I know I'm a fucktard. I pissed my pants took off the lens cap and see the UV Filter's glass in shards. I carefully cleaned them off popped off the UV Filter, autofocus perfect! Manual focus perfect!
I'm going out and buying another one tomorrow.

YES YES YES!!!!
I got saved a week ago.
I was crossing a stream with my T2i and a nikkor 24mm when it swung out on the strap as I jumped and the lens hit a rock. The lens cap popped off and the uv filter came out of it with two GIANT cracks. Without it, I would have ruined a $400 dollar lens.

DAMN!
I only had the stock 18-55 lens of mine which I was afraid I'd have to pay $90 for a new one. I wouldn't imagine what I'd do if my $400 dollar lens broke.

not to sound mean but that might be the perfect opportunity to ditch the kit lens
but back to the topic, I will never shoot without a filter, they have saved my ass on many occasions

Just make sure you throw down on a good one if you don't want to significantly degrade image quality. I notice a pretty big difference on my 24-70 with a filter because it isn't really high-end.

truth. no point in protecting your lens if the filter just ruins your IQ

I mainly shoot skateboarding so I'm saving up for a telephoto or 50m nikkor 1/8 f.
