80s music the peak of musical intelligence?

i think that between  the late 70s and into the 80s was the time that the deepest sounds ever were created.

Duran Duran, Simple minds,  The Cure,  Eurythmics,  the doors and others who used synthesized sound.

I feel like 80s synthesized music was really the birth of electronic music.

I think bands like fischerspooner and ladytron and cut copy really captured what the 80s was, which is why i think those to bands are making a sound these days that nobody else can hold a candle to.

watch teddybearcrisis and youll know what i mean by the 80s sound, i think the 80s shits on the 60s in terms of brilliance

I agree that all those bands you named are great. It's a matter of opinion what the "smartest" or most "intelligent" music is, but I love the 80s..

most of the music i like never makes mainstream for exactly that reason.

The average person likes average music.

The 80s sound that im talking about was not the mainstream 80s... thats why its so special.

I think that cocaine inspired introspection is what led to the brilliance of the 80s... all those artists were on tons of cocaine...  Im not saying drugs are good but i think the 80s musicians had more "fuel" than any other era

combine that with you mentioning the doors.... the doors were late 60's into the early 70's, not the 80's.

Umm LSD=Creativity to the highest level ever thought possible, meaning the sounds of the 60's and 70's were when musicians were being influenced by it. duran duran is pretty mainstream so is talking heads and all those new wave groups, not saying there bad but cocaine definitely is not nearly as creative a drug as LSD with that being said there was more repetition and pop music style to the music in the 80's than the 70's and 60's. 60's and 70's took modern music exploration to the furthest possible in my opinion because bands like pink floyd, the grateful dead, the beatles, jethro tull, rush, u name it they all have distinct sounds that no one can really recreate. everything popular in the 60's and 70's sounded quite differnt from eachother and even today.

Go back about 200-300 years and you will find the time when music was at its peak complexity and depth-wise. So much more to a Beethoven symphony than some 80s electronic track.

another thing i realized is that the 80's is probably the best era for movies too, soooo many awesome movies came from the 80's. Now its like any potentially good movie is ruined by CGI and the fact that in order to make money off a movie it basically has to suck. people are too stupid to realize a good movie when they see it. just look at how popular avatar is.

I wouldn't say 2 guys layering simple tracks hits the peak of musical genius. All quite debatable but most of the bands you listed play in simple keys, simple time measures, and have simple parts that could go with any song.

Just because you can use a synth (which any 14 year old who is bored in his room can do) does not make you a musical genius.

70s and 80s are easily the best music. However the 90s own rap they had the best rappers ever in that decade. All the music put out today is mostly junk.

whoever said the thing about beethoven is dead on. THAT was the peak of musical intelligence. it's gotten slowly dumber and less complex as time goes on. what we have now on the radio is whats left over when everybody takes a bite and passes it on.

but early 90's rap from New York is my favorite if i have to say.

Jazz music is/was influential, but as a jazz musician it's pretty simple. There is a lot more to a romantic piece than a jazz piece. And LOL at everyone who mentions Beethoven and Mozart as the same era.

Ahhh, Jazz definitely beats classical for complexity, at least when comparing classical 200 years ago and any stage of jazz. But, the depth that you get out of a full orchestra with an organ and choir just can't be beat.

this post flew under the radar so far, lol



i like 80s hair metal, just because most of todays hardrock/metal is dark and melancholic while back then it was more happy and uplifting.

but i wouldnt say "fuck yea, THA 80s" from an intelligence perspective. i dont play an instrument or know too much theoretically, but i would expect some 18/19th century composer to be superior and for gods fucking sake led zeppelin to be the same.

Are you shitting me? Have you ever played both classical and jazz? Jazz just follows basic sets of chord progressions, whereas classical music is more free composition wise. It is ridiculously easy to write a small jazz ensemble (not big band) 12 bar blues in 10-15 minutes.

I think classical is too predictable, and am a much bigger jazz fan. I do love the 80's but, not for the musical intelligence, more for the fun in music.   Sometimes you can have best of both worlds

In a way your right but in a way your being ignorant to jazz music. Classical and jazz each hold their own amazingly complex characteristics. Classical music is deeper involved in harmony and counter melodies. being able to write the music for each part requires a lot of skill, time, and theory knowledge.

Moving on. Saying that jazz follows a basic set of chords is so far from the truth. Jazz chords are more complex than any other form of western music. and there is no set shape to a jazz progression, there are just common ones that come up a lot. In classical there are major minor diminished augmented and half diminished chords. In jazz you have all of those plus 7th chords, 6ths chords, add 9's sharp 11's ect and crazy inversions of each. im not saying that these chords are never found in classical but its rare.
Jazz music is not about the form being impressive ether. Its about improving over the chords, a skill that to do well, takes just as much theory knowledge and skill as classical.

and there is a difference between writing a shitty head in 10-15 minutes like you claim you could and writing a blues and preforming it like miles davis would.

Eh, I can agree but also disagree. There is a definite structure that they are SUPPOSED to follow but guys like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven among others followed it but fucked around with it.

For me, Jazz and Blues outside of what really appears in The Blues Brothers I can't listen to for an extended time.

Or Big Band type stuff like this:
