I use Norton because my mom insists on paying for it because she doesn't understand that software is free and thinks my computer will failsplode without it, and I'm not really complaining, but I usually use a combination of AVG, Spybot, and The Cleaner. The Cleaner costs money but the trail version has full functionality, and you just have to re-download it every time it expires. Its for trojans.

bullshit. every system which allows YOU to edit, delete files, start processes, etc can be a target of viruses, no matter what encryption.

its just that there are CONSIDERABLY less viruses around. a brief research brought me to about 40 that are currently known (WITHOUT bootcamp stuff). that is like 1/100000000 or whatever of windows-viruses, but still.

and the fact that intelligent people (also in this thread) use anti-virus software is a good sign that this thing is vulnerable.



but in my opinion, this virus-shit is overrated. i have a old laptop at home, pretty much only for internet-stuff (all data is backed up on a disconnected external HD) and it has no anti-virus-software. i surf the web since 3 years with that thing and its still running fine (besides the battery missing, i lost it and the cd-drive kinda destroyed, because i used it to store coins in high school). i am not saying that anti-virus-software is unnecessary and i use it on my two newer computers.

its a thing of effort vs. reward. if i am a hacker, i would try to hit as many people in their respective faces as possible. so yeah, i could try to fuck with these 5-6% which do not use windows, or with the rest. also chances are that mac users are more advanced in technical things, so they arent as easy to trick. then again, it might be tougher to program a mac-virus, so in the end, most people will program a windows-virus.

yeah i think avg is the best free one, although the resident shield on the 30 day trial for the paid version pisses me off. its always telling me theres some spyware all up in my browser files but the scans dont find it soooooooooo yeah.
